I'm playing with the Offshore Navigator planning a "Potential" trip to the great Chesapeake.

Coming from the Delaware River, Through the C&D Canal and down the eastern shore of the Chesapeake, where is the best place to cut across the Chesapeake towards the Baltimore Inner Harbor. When I made the trip back in '02, I cut across at Shell Pt. That channel wasn't very well marked, but I had no problems other than the mid August squall that caught us a little off guard :smt013 .

Would it be best to go that same route or should I just continue down the eastern shore to the Brewerton Channel? Again...just in case I make the trip....

Here is the list:
As of 6/18/07, we have 12 confirmed, 4 maybe ....

Dominic, I have not been north of the Bay Bridge, so I will defer to some of the Chesapeake Home Port types for advice on this one. We sure plan on a trip to Baltimore this summer, though.

Really depends where you want to go. As long as you are south of Aberdeen you will be OK. (Pooles Island)
When we go to Baltimore I run down to Brewerton channel then into Baltimore.

It's not a bad trip, you should be fine.

When you guys go to Balimore be sure to leave a trail of bread crumbs so I can follow you into the harbor. :smt043. Someone need to pick a date......... :smt101

As Mark said, north of Pooles Island, stay on the eastern side. South of Pooles the main shipping channel follows the eastern shore but there is a shallower channel (not sure if it has a name)that heads southwest toward the harbor, skirting Hart-Miller Island.

Follow Brewerton channel to the Fort McHenry channel, and keep right at the Fort to get to the Inner Harbor. It's a nice trip but I've only done it in the fall and can't tell you how crowded it might get in the summer.

Thanks for the info....pretty much what I thought.....

I am working with two or three other Sea Rays from NJ to make a late July trip into the BIH. It's only December, and the dates are VERY tentative at this time....the trip could be made in one day, but it might be too much (approx 225 miles total) and the Admiral surely wouldn't like that....so from Central NJ, it is a two day trip to get into the BIH....the plan right now would be to spend two nights at Schooner Island Marina, Wildwood NJ, (great spot for kids, nice pool, and plenty of restaurants) and then head to BIH from there for two or three days. On the way back, we will skip Wildwood, and head straight to Atlantic City for two days. About a 7 day trip all together, give or take.....

If anyone else from NJ would like to hook up and make the trip, or any leg of it, just chime in and we can start setting some hard dates. I like the idea of using MM's Schooner Island Getaway 7/27-28 for the two day stay at schooner....then to BIH and then back to AC....

It would be nice if some of you Chesapeake guys could make your way up to Wildwood also....

We'll see if this thread gains any momentum, and then take it from there....I'll give it a bump from time to time especially as we closer....but I can tell you this, nothing makes the winter months go by faster than planning a good summer getaway...

Dominic,
Not sure about making the Wildwood part of the trip but we will hook up with you when you get to the northern end of the Chesapeake and continue on with the group to BIH or wherever else the currents take us. Sounds like a good opportunity for the Southern Chesapeake guys to head north as well....

Sounds good Frank...I'll post more as we get closer, but I would guess you and I could hook up around the Sasafras and then head south by southwest into the BIH.....Just talking about a boat trip feels good....now I just need a boat....haven't closed on the 410 yet....

My wife and I were just talking about a trip to Ocean City this summer.
Has anybody here ever done that from northern Chesapeake? Looks like the best route is down the Deleware and outside to OCMD.

Must be the mid winter blues with all the talk of trip planning for the summer.

With Regard to BIH , does anyone have a good recommendation for a marina with transient slips?

I was talking with my neighbor today, and it looks like this trip is really gonna happen....

Hey guys,

I have some contacts for Baltimore Inner Harbor, and maybe.......I mean maybe..............there is a chance I could get us all hooked up together. Let me make some calls, gather some info and I will get back to you guys.

In the mean time, have a happy New Years...............and

GO RAVENS!!!

Raven:

Sounds great if you can make the slip arrangements.....which marina are you in touch with? We're gonna need to get a head count here...and now I hate to be the one to say this, but were also going to need to know the cancellation policy....I've had more than my share of "Bad Weather" cancel some of my trips....so just in case....

Anyway....as it stands now....from NJ it will be me and Linda ('03 410DA), Bob and Lynn ('06 38DA) and Fred and Elanor (/07 320 DA).....anyone else from NJ thinking of making the trip.....?????

Who else is "in"....

Oh...one more thing....

GO GIANTS....

Our yacht club does an annual Frostebite Cruise in October to the Baltimore Inner Harbor Marina, we typically have about 25 - 30 boats on this cruise. We have also done club cruises to Inner Harbor East. These places are managed by the same people. Inner Harbor Marina would put everybody within steps of downtown, Inner Harbor East would be quite a walk but there is water taxi service available. I will get in contact with our power fleet captain at my club and see what the precedure is to reserve slips, cancellation, ect.

John:

That sounds GREAT....

Based on the dates I posted (Sunday night 7/29 and Monday 7/30 night stays) hopefully they should be easier than trying to get weekend night stays....

We're going to need a cruise director....I don't mind taking over from the Jersey side ....are you willing to take it from the Chesapeake side????

Last time we were there we stayed at the Harbor view marina...it was ok...but this marina looks much nicer.....

Let's keep the momentum going....

Speaking of love boat...I'm going on a cruise in two weeks to the Western Caribbean...Carnival Glory...7 days of fun...planning to do some diving in Belize, Cozumel and Crand Cayman...can't wait...I'll be sure to get some tips from the cruise director aboard the Glory......Hey...do you think the captain will let me drive a bit...
