Hi,

My names Chris, Fairly new to boating, been on the site a little while mostly just soaking up peoples useful information and tips. I could use some more of that useful information myself today.

Had bad winds last night night here in ohio. Tied off to the dock where they just added 2 new posts for stability and the are about 18" higher than all the others and sit about 3 inches lower than the top of my bow railing. No breakwall or really any type of protection where I dock as it is a small 4000acre lake. So when we do get bad weather we are pretty much in the open. last night 1-3 ft waves at the dock and 50mph wind had the boat listing back and forth so much the bow railing got over the post and when it came back one the other way one of the arms that hold the railing up and in place pulled out of the center of the piece screwed to the deck.

Can anyone give me any good place to start looking for an arm for the bow railing of a 1978 26' DA. The upper section, the actual railing, seems to be ok but one of the arms where it attachs to the deck pulled off and broke where it was screwed. No fiberglass damage all 3 of the bottle are still there just the very center pulled out. i dont know if this is a design feature not to damage fiberglass?? Sorry, I dont have a picture and its 3rd from the stern on the port side if that make a difference.

Thanks for advance for any help.

Happy boating!

Chris

Sounds like you need a stainless steel welding repair Chris. Pics would be a great asset if you would like some more definitive suggestions.

Thanks for the quick response.

Unfortunately, unless I first get a net with a really long handle to fish the 14'' section a welder will not be able to do the trick.

I could in theory possible find the section as the dock is only 8' of water but it is highly unlikely it is a very muddy bottom. So im looking more in the area of boat boneyards or salavage companies that ship parts. If anyone knows of any in Ohio that would be even better.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, most marine stores can sell you lengths of SS tubing. The two most common sizes are 7/8" OD and 1" OD.

You might even have a metal stock and tubing supply store in your area. Check the Yellow Pages for that.

Are you describing a section of ss pipe that runs vertically up from the deck fitting to the top rail? If that is all that it is , then do as suggested by Lazy Daze and get yourself an appropriate length of pipe with the correct diameter and you have yourself a very simple repair. Are these pipes secured with allen set srews?

Electricaldoctor--Yes, it is the ss pipe running vertical with the allen screws connecting at the fittings. Im searching for metal fabricators in the area now. Thanks

Lazy Daze--thanks for the input trying to locate someone now who can get one down quick. Thanks

Try going to a shop where they make boat tops. They have different sized ss pipes.

Another good suggestion. I just talked to a boat top shop and they said the used thick walled aluminium tubing..Do you guys think this would stand out from the rest of them or would it be a passable substitute? Again, Thanks for all the good input

Problem: Aluminum in direct contact with SS = more likely to have corrosion.

The "arm" you're referring to is called a stanchion.
As suggested you should be able to find it either in stainless steel or aluminum to match what you have.
Good luck.

Lazy Daze--I didnt think of the corrorsion issue thanks I will keep looking for SS

Nehalennia--Thanks for the boat vocabulary lesson. Like I said still fairly new at this boating thing, but I am learnering by the day. Todays lessons include how to re-tie a fender properly at 4am in my underwear in 50mph winds and the things that connect the upper bow rail to the deck are call stanchions. Its a slow process but Im learning LoL
