Anyone docking in saginaw bay area

There is a spot north east of quainacassee also near sunset bay that is nice and sandy, there are usually a few boats from lindy landing out there having fun.

Awesome that sounds like me  My grandparents used to live in Oakhurst Park, is that the area? Last time I was there it was fairly rocky, as well as only knee deep for about a 100 yards or so out. I suppose I can ask my marina mates as well, but I plan to fish the "trough" going up the east side of the bay so that will most likely be where I will end up, unless there's a raft up with fellow CSR members elsewhere:grin:.

We really need to organize a CSR raft off sometime this summer. I'm thinking over the 4th sometime......fireworks??....

Absolutely, but we're lighting them off of your boat :smt043:smt043:lol:!!

I think that'd be a greta idea, 4th or just some random day is fine too! Get together at a beach, let the kids play, cook out, tell stories, or whatever.

Chicken!!

I'll have the radar arch with rod holders installed by tomorrow. There is a reason they call those arch mounted rod holders "rocket launchers"!!

Yea sounds like its near oakhurst park dont remember any rocks though,i would have to get my navman on the boat and powered up to get coordinates though as i mark the good spots for fishing and swimming.season before last we kept in sebawaing and fished the slot almost every weekend i think i have a few walley in the deep freeze from there still. We could start at fish point and troll south west then it would be time for a swim and lunch then troll back past sebawaing about three miles near the islands and home by dark.If you are at quanicassee there are a few that hang that spot all summer, might be a good place to hook for the night too, with a quick run into sunset bay if weather gets crappy.PS sunset isnt a very nicely kept marina though. In its day i imagine it was the bomb, they have camping and had a nice launch .

Back about the time that our boats were new my parents slipped at Sunset Bay; from what I can remember (and stories from dad) they were incredibly hard to get a hold of back then. I remember one time my dad calling them and the phone rang 20 times before he even got an answering machine! I'm not even too sure their operating anymore:huh:? When I was looking for slips I tried to find them and when I looked on Mapquest (satelite images) there was only a boat or two in the marina where other marinas were full and it didn't look like it had been dredged recently either. I asked around, got similar stories of poor customer service and difficulty contacting them but no one seems to know if their still open. Oakhurst has a sheltered harbor, but I know we couldn't get in and out of there with a 255 AJ and with water levels being low this year it may be impossible.
This sparked my curiosity so I called them; they are in deed still open, plenty of slips to go around and they're only $450/season :wow:!!
https://marinas.com/view/marina/3476_Sunset_Bay_Marina_Unionville_MI Place looks like it's just about abandoned in the pics.
It's sad really when you think about things like this, I went by Brennan Marine (Skipper Bud's now) and I don't think they rent out slips either. Things like this are a sign of the times when operations like these look like ghost towns!

Good place to track water levels... http://www.lre.usace.army.mil/greatlakes/hh/datalinks/PrinterFriendly/DailyLevelsEnglish.pdf

Skipper buds is open and they have" some" good docks for rent ,slowly changing to floaters one section at a time .I was there today and both my boats are there too.I was finishing my buff magic and sterted the wax on wax off part, got transom ans starboard side done.Did you walk through the showroom? I am the last boat before you go into cold storage area .Some of the really tall docks are for big old chriscrafts.

I'll have to check your rig out Glenn. I get over there every so often. In fact, we almost purchased that green 250DA on the tri-axle trailer. That is what lead us to buy the 268DA we have now.

I was drooling over that 33 for sale for like $29K on a trailer. Great deal and beautiful boat, but that was just a little too big of a move for us.

We did not go inside, I had my dad and both kids with me and it was too depressing. After Sunset Bay my parents moved to Brennan's when they bought their Carver and I have pics. from back in the "hay day" when at this time of year the indoor storage was full and there were so many boats stored outside there was only enough room for 2 cars to barely pass each other. I'd post some of them, but I'm way too emberassed about my wardrobe choices in some of those pictures :smt043. I ran into Pat Brennan, son of one of the original owners (he works at West Marine in Bay City) and he said they used to employ 500 people there :wow:. I don't think they have that much going on any more. I'm happy to hear they're getting it turned around :smt038 as that place is a part of my childhood and it would be a sign of good things if they can fill up again (I think I read they have 325 slips:huh:). The unfortunate art about that place is that it has to be atleast an hour ride out to the Bay now (the entire river is no wake now if I am correct and it didn't used to be) which means to catch first light fishing you'd have to leave the dock by 5. Waking up at 4am to get myself, the boat, and 2 kids ready for the day is not my idea of a relaxing weekend:lol:

There are two wake zones on the way to the bay ,it makes for a 35-45 min. ride depending on how fast you run those areas .I dont slip there just store for that reason i bought a slip at sunset shores. The heated storage at skipper buds was so full this year i am in the showroom. There was a 390 for sale right where mine is setting that sold in the fall for cheap ,and it was clean too.I knoe the 340 that was there was nice also_Our 1993 2655 is there in cold storage showroom too"for sale" nice boat and great on gas.I will probably be up there on saturday waxing ,then only a few things left to do till splash.Glen

More signs of the time; back in the day ( we were there from '88 unitl....? mid/late 90's  not too sure) indoor storage let alone heated was first come first serve, there were NEW boats stored outside (when you pull in on the right is a small area between the fence and a small building, it used to be full of trailer boats in the 16-22 ish range) so forget a place in the show room for yours, all the slips were rented not just a few, and that place was hoppin'! Of course at that time the Bay City Yacht Club had a waiting list and gas was under $1.00/Gal:wow:. I'm starting to sound like my dad with these stories :smt100:smt101.

I'm happy where I'm at as I looked around a bit including looking at Sunset Shores (one of the Power Squadron guys/instructors keeps his sail boat there). Even with the prices to purchase a slip being great I didn't want to deal with the yearly fees on top of that, mainly because as the membership goes down the fees will go up to cover the costs of maintaining the facilities. I also looked at another place on the river that looks very nice, but the big draw back (and as well another for Sunset Shores) was being #1 in the city and #2 on the river. I don't want to spend my weekends fighting traffic in the boat but more important I want to be away from the city. Sunset Bay was too far as I'm not looking to be an hour and a half plus away which also ruled out AuGres, Tawas, and many other places. It came down to Linwood and Lindy's (Quanicassee). Linwood is incredibly busy with traffic from the launch they run there, the marina, the sales guys all over everyone all the time, the camp ground, the rules and regulations, and so on. Lindy's was only $700 for the season, they're relaxed, laid back, kind of outta the way but not too far, they don't "force" people into their service dept. (many other places do not allow you to work on your own stuff, let alone someone else, Lindy's said they have enough work they don't need to generate their own), and the best part of all for me is if I don't like it I can move next year, maybe to Sunset Shores!

I just realized I need to get my boat here!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm spending waaaaaaaaaaay too much time :smt024 and not enough time boating! I wish I hadn't sold the "old" one because I would have been out on the lake today :smt089.

Absolutely chicken.....I'll put it on the grill while you launch rockets!:smt043 Better yet, I'll put some walleye and perch on the grill

Be assured the docks would be replaced quicker if it wasnt for the red tape the state and federal gov put these guys through to do construction of any kind on the water.even if it is classified as repairs once the dock poles touch water they will start draining the marinas bank accounts, which is why they are slowly replaceing the docks. There are some nice people there at skippers and they dont seem to try to hard to push service down your throat.WE looked into lindys landing also it seemed very nice but i got a great deal on my slip and the dues are less than lindys by 2-300 per season I also like the fact it is gated ,no im not a snob but my boat has been vandalized before and it just one less thing to worry about.we also have some live aboards there all season like the capt of the appledore and princess winona is 6 boats down from us with his first mate.I also like it a bit quiet as ive had a few loud and not so proud years behind me.Hope to meet you other searay guys soon.Glen

I KNEW IT!!!!!!!! A bunch of (bigger than my) boat owning, gated community, stuck up SNOBS!:smt043:lol: Sorry if I sounded condescending, surely was not ment but I can see that a little bit as I read through my posts, consider it more of me justifying it to myself why I am where I am. If I remember correctly I looked at a boat for sale there with slip for $11,900 :wow: ( I think? Could have been somewhere else around there)! Ownership of a dock coud be great, especially with a tight knit group that gets along well. On the other hand(s) almost everyone is offereing 20% (or more) off for first year customers so I'll try Lindy's this year and if I don't like it I will move. For now it provides the perfect balance of distance and price, BUT the admiral just got her degree and is getting a promotion into management in her company. At first it looked like she would be doing her training in Beverly Hills(as of her interview one week ago today), but now (as of today :smt038) we have learned it will most likely be in Frankenmuth as they have a MIT getting ready to move on and her current boss is already looking for her replacement in her current position. After that she will have her own facility to run somewhere. Fortunately we are in the market to buy a second home so this leaves her extremely flexible because we can buy a home where ever they place her (I work out of the house so it doesn't matter where I live). I know the company has several facilities in Traverse City for example and I would hate to have bought a slip here and then have to pay dues or try to lease it or whatever when we're up there. We had quite a lengthy conversation about these types of things tonight as a matter of fact. We talked about moving north of here IF she ends up working that way to say Bridgeport or Burch Run. She's unfortunatley a little apprehensive as we would be further from her sister in Chelsea, the rest of her family in Pennsylvania, and my parents (she threw that in to shut me up ) but for the once or twice a year we go see her family in Pa. and the 5 or 6 times we go to see her sister what is an extra 35/40 minutes? Not like it will make a difference to them as none of them have been here to see us since our son was born and he's 4!
Decisions, decisions! Unfortunatley life is up in the air right now as far as somethings go, I just wish my boat would get here so I could relax! Do me a favor and send me pictures of the bay and the monster walleye you guys catch so I can live my boating life through you until mid May :smt089

lets see ithink i have a pioc here.Nope wrong computer sorry.going to wax on wax off today etc....

Have fun Glenn. I got the arch, radar and spreader lights all bolted up last night. Now it's time to hit the cosmetic stuff. Polish, wax......My arms are sore just thinking about it.

Well shes waxed ,and the advil have worn off and i can still feel my arms and shoulders and calfs.Clean windows, install exit hose for poopy tank,6 feul filters, and touch up bottom paint and pulpit varnish and add bow roller ,move searchlight then shes ready to splash at wich time the marina will adjust the new shaft packing and change trans fluid.glenWhat are spreader lights for?how about a pic?

Glenn,
Sounds like you are ready! Cool.

Here are the spreader lights. They are for lighting the deck when fishing or preparing the boat in the dark:
