Anyone add up their seasonal costs for 2011?

This is another one of those end season depressing threads.

I have put close to 70 hours on this year and i haven't seen my boat in over 2 1/2 weeks. It's gonna be hauled out in a couple of weeks.

I picked up a bilge heater from a fellow board member ( thanks big fella) and I need to install it this weekend so I don't end up posting a panicked thread like I did last year when the temp drops into the upper 20's for a night or two. If you add that to my bellows replacement this year plus gas and head pumping I am around $4500 for the season (no way I'm gonna tally the food and booze cost).

I have a free dock (in exchange for a lot of manual labor for my father) so that helps A LOT!

I took a new job that drastically altered my career path but dropped my income for the short term. I'm dreading winter.

Damn TB's boat app!
I'm glad I "forgot" to put in all of my gas receipts.

Bought PLAN B in January (down payment, trips to SoCal, surveys, trucking, etc) Somewhere around $30K
Maintenance North of $4K (and still going)
Upgrades North of $5K (more to come)
Fuel so far about $2,300 (will cruise through December)
Slip fees about $5K by end of year
Transient fees $750 give or take
Insurance $900 or so...
Payments $8,700
Admiral's crap North of $2,000

Is it worth it? Hell yes!

Here lies the true reason for this thread. We all get it!! Boating has no relative connection between cost of ownership and satisfaction gained. For us there is a disconnect between the wallet and the adventure. Some will spend thousands to climb a mountain or go on Safari. We spend thousands and only need to drive to the boat to get the same thrill. Is it a good investment financially. H no. Is it a good investment into family memories - priceless. If you ask my grandkids whats the best part of summer, they're gonna say it's grandpa's boat.

I won't miss next summer with them again!!

I forgot to add in insurance... $600 for both boats... I know it is low, I have a very high deductible... BTW, this is the first time I actually added up the cost... The boat is not an economic investment, it is an investment in relationships....

I dont and wont put a price on my seasonal costs, it's all in the pursuit of happiness! Whether fishing, cruising, entertaining or whatever....
Reminds me of some words in the song "Cool Change" by the Little River Band:

'Well I was born in the sign of water
And it's there that I feel my best
The albatros and the whales they are my brothers
And it's kind of a special feeling
When you're out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon like a lover'

All true sailors will understand...
:)

Oh man that's funny!!!

Cost of the season for me, whatever it was it was well worth it. Our 4 kids between the ages of 6-12 will never forget the half dozen trips or so this year :smt001

Sorry if someone else brought this up......

Anyone figure that out to per hour in boat??????

That, for me would be one ugly number.

Tried that with the cabin once. About $1150 in fixed costs per month..... + or - 16 weekends a year plus one or two weeks summer..... Christmas.... variable costs.... It was just easier to just have another beer at that point.

OK here goes

27 hrs on new 185....... 3 payments (so far.. but 7 more before it gets wet again.. count those now or in the spring?)at 266...... Gas at $1.49 liter... insurance.... plates.... Cool new tow rope color coded to match.... $$$ winterizing costs.... Holy sweet! Not bad huh!

You can't figure it on run time. So much of our time on the boat is with no engines running. We just spent 2 full weeks on our boat and ran the engines a total of 14 hours over about 200 miles. We do a lot of weekend raft ups, not to mention just overnight at the marina and much of that time as as good as running time.

Fuel: $1200
Upgrades: $6,000
Repairs: $5,000
Maint: $1,000
Damages: $3,500
Trailer Tires/Brakes: $1800

Grand Total: $17,500

I'm still not quite back on the water yet because of a slight "hiccup" with something I'm too embarrassed to talk about. After this season....I keep starring at the boat saying to myself.."She's worth it" but I swear if another things breaks.....shes going up on boat trader!

$10,000 down payment
$750 for dry storage
$2000 in fuel
$900 in insurance
~$500 in stuff (fire extinguisher, flag, etc.)
$700 for documentation
$300 for survey
$2,275 in taxes

Total: 17,425....since June.

Ouch.

You guys don't need to justify the costs because we all know that any amount of $$$ could be balanced by those priceless memories...right? For myself I think I could create those memories just as easily with some kayaks, hiking boots, tent and a campfire...the scale would still balance. But I'm getting to old for that kind of stuff so I'll keep cruising in the SR.

Boat-$45,000
Dockage-$3000
Gas- $1500
Various stuff $1000

Bought the boat July 16th.

Payments 0.00
Fuel $500
New Garmin GPS/sonar. $500
Repairs/new battery charger $175
Maintainence/wax. $200
Trailer Main. 0.00
Time on water 55 hrs...not done yet!
Docking. $350
New 12ft x 31ft Carport for boat at home. $2000 (cheap storage)
Total cost 2011 $3725.00

At $300 a month for non-heated winter storage.....the carport will be paid for in one year! I had a big tarp on her last winter and it holds alot of snow that needs pushed off! My CV-23 loves her TNT carport so the 270 getting one this month. I may need a new refrig for 2012 but it works great as an Ice Box/Cooler as is, Mike.

I agree, I would go crazy sitting in the backyard all summer. Its like waterfront property when you need it to be.

In my case, i have an idea of how much it costs, but as long as I can afford it, It doesn't matter. How do you put a value on going on vacation every weekend for 4 plus months per year? How do you put a value on seeing some of the most perfect sunsets? How do you put a value on the most wonderful times spent with our family and friends? Life on the water is about life, not money. I only wish it was cheaper, so many other hard working individuals could experience it. It just doesn't get better! For those that make sacrifices to be on the water, think of it this way: When it is your last day on this planet, are you going to remember the new things you have done in your homes, or are you going to remember the wonderful moments in time you have spent with your loved ones on your boats? For me, I won't be thinking of the new leather couch I bought for my den or the new kitchen, rather I will be remembering the most wonderful moments in my life on my boat with my family and friends. My goal: enjoy this life for all it's worth, it ain't lasting forever, and when it ends, No Regrets! Now go out there and enjoy your boats before it snows!
