Why do you need 7 feet of rope per 1 foot water depth?midway said:The marks help you know how many feet of rope you have let out so you will know that you have the anchor out properly, something like 7 feet rope per 1 foot of water depth and don't forget chain on the anchor end if you are making this up new, the weight of the chain helps to set the anchor.
When the boat drifts, the anchor is drifting sideways too, along the bottom. Looking for an immovable object to attach itself to. Permanently! :smt013midway said:"Why do you need 7 feet of rope per 1 foot water depth?"
To be sure you have the proper angle from the anchor to the bow of your boat, if the angle of the rope is too steep it will hold the arm of the anchor up so the anchor cannot set properly and when that happens your anchor will not hold and you will drift from your spot.
