should i get my anchor rope at the local boat store or will a nice rope from home depot work?

Go to the boat store to determine what you want/need. Then go to Home Depot and save yourself about 25-30%.

What you guys can recommend to use as marks (beside plastic marks from West Marine) for the anchor rope. I thought it would be helpfull to have it done every 10-20'.

Thanks,
Alex.

The marks help you know how many feet of rope you have let out so you will know that you have the anchor out properly, something like 7 feet rope per 1 foot of water depth and don't forget chain on the anchor end if you are making this up new, the weight of the chain helps to set the anchor.

Why do you need 7 feet of rope per 1 foot water depth?

"Why do you need 7 feet of rope per 1 foot water depth?"

To be sure you have the proper angle from the anchor to the bow of your boat, if the angle of the rope is too steep it will hold the arm of the anchor up so the anchor cannot set properly and when that happens your anchor will not hold and you will drift from your spot. In the strong current where I live and boat you better have the anchor well set and if the tide is coming in you need to feed out more rope at times so the rising tide will not pull your anchor loose, we have a 6 to 9 foot tide swing and at about middle of the swing the water is running about 5 to 6 mph so you want the anchor to hold. Strong winds can also pull the anchor loose.

That is some good reading Wesley put in here, explains it all real well.

When the boat drifts, the anchor is drifting sideways too, along the bottom. Looking for an immovable object to attach itself to. Permanently! :smt013

Anchors have a mean streak in them like that.

But is that true for all waters? We anchor in small coves, and usually drop the anchor straight down, and have never had a problem.

Most of the time in calm coves with no current it's no big deal, by the way you are not setting the anchor by dropping it straight down, just wait until you get stuck out in a strong storm with winds pushing your baby towards the shore with rocks/trees/etc just waiting to chew it up :smt100 :smt089 . You are going to wish you had the anchor set and the right amount of rode out. I think Wesleys links hit the nail right on the head, way to go Wesley

For us inland lake boaters that anchor in coves, "sometimes" dropping an anchor straight down is enough, if there's no wind etc.. It's not anchoring, it's just dropping some weight to keep you from drifting. Unfortunately, to many boaters think "dropping" an anchor means just that. Pull up, tie off to a raft up "then" drop, there anchor straight down. It does no good if it's not set.

I set my anchor no matter what. To many times I've been the one at the end of the day with my anchor 4' below the bottom while everyone else is pulling up their anchors hanging straight down, most of the time not even on the bottom. :smt013

It's amazing what 5-10 boats tied up can do to the one anchor that's actually set. :smt013
