Amberjack Thread -

Welcome to the 270 AJ Mistry water problem. I've had the same problems, first it was water and air conditioning condenser pan which solved the problem for a while. Then additional water showed up. Possible sources; if you have a fishing package with a radar arch check to see that the bolts securing the arch to the boat are tight, also check the gasket material it may have degraded. check the cleats in this zone where you tie off your boat or fenders they could have migrated loose or the gaskets degraded. If you have horizontal rod holders in the gunwales you can get water through the tubes in him down into the hold of the boat. I do not have the mid cabin so I have the storage compartment. Water from washingthe rod holder area will go into that compartment and should normally drain out however my previous work on the air-conditioning issue hi removed some panels and didn't properly re-sealed them so water found its way into the bilge below the steps. The location of the bilge pump is not at the lowest point, for the water to activate the switch you can be walking in water in the galley. I suggest considering getting an automatic computer controlled rule bilge pump. It turns on every 2 1/2 minutes if the impellers sense resistance it will continue to pump the water out until resistance is gone. If it turns on And meets no resistance it shuts itself off. this doesn't solve the leak problem but it it sure beats wet carpet and other issues that wet carpet gives, such as mold or mildew, and it wastes a lot of time. Another possible source would be some leaking around the portal to the head on the starboard side of the matching portal or on the port side. A friend of the 280 Sundancer changed navigation lights and then he started having leakage around these lights eventually causing wet carpet (sorted out this is it but it's worth mentioning usually good reason seal things properly if you changed out lights etc.). Hope this helps solve the problem.

You should also check the shower drain box which is under the steps to make sure there are no leaks from it. fill the trashcan with water and pour into the shower drain, immediately look in listen under the steps. make sure the shower bilge pumps the water out and there's no leakage from the box itself or the hoses out of the bilge pump to the discharge. this probably isn't the problem but it's worth checking.

In response to one of the comments on this thread about getting a 270 AJ to the left coast Instead of buying one from their. Looks like I'm moving overseas for 3 to 4 years and would consider a salefor the right offer. I have the trailer that's been hardly used. can be towed with a three-quarter ton pickup or higher. one can do it themselves or have it contracted.

Thanks for the info. As for the automatic computer controlled rule bilge pump, does it sit low enough to catch water and get it out? It seems part of the problem is that by the time water would get high enough to turn on the current bilge it's already leaked onto the carpet. Would I just replace the old bilge with a new better one? Thanks for any info.

No I don't or more accurately I can't remember.....I did look when I last had her out of the water. They are what came with the boat....WOT is at 5100rpm for 33.1 kts so it's about right.

I'll dive on her during the week and post next week end.

I have been underneath and the props I'm running are 20P so I guess that's 20".

in the same location will not empty the bilge, but will keep the carpet dry, i suggest moving the pump to the lowest pump, you will need more hose to do that. Best to fix the leak too, but dry carpet is nice.

sorry, move pump to the oowest part of the bilge, which is towards the bow in front of the shower drain.

Sanchita, how did you wire the automatic pump? I see there is an extra wire and I'm not sure which ones to use. Thanks.

the easy way, had my son work on it. So I am not sure. the existing system when the switch and therefore pump is activated it activates a horn that screams, and is very annoying the horn needs to be disabled otherwise it screams every 2 1/2 minutes

Hi all you Amberjack owners. I have a 2009 270 AJ with the fishing option and aft berth. Love it, but have two questions: first - what are people doing for a dinghy on their 27 foot AJ? Specifically, what size dinghy, rigid or inflatable, and where is it going? I'm thinking of an 8 footer, aluminum hull with inflatable sponsons (an AB), that I would put on the stern swim grid with Weaver attachments. Any thoughts?
Second, it's time to install radar. Are most people going with a Furuno 1715?

Many thanks!

Probably Raymarine. Regardless go digital. use Furuno if it matches the rest of your electronics. You probably have a chartplotter capable of sirius wx radar overlay. Really nice, but it doesn't show oncoming boats and objects. there are some sonar units now with high resolution sidescan options now that are nice.

as to the dingy, lay it upside down on the bow and strap it down is the easy way. otherwise you can get some davits you attach to the swim platform and recepticals to glue to the inflatables tube. hook on, pull/tilt up and secure to the stern

Thanks Sanchia - appreciate the reply. What did you end up doing for a dinghy on your AJ? And what advantage does digital radar offer?

to docbruce:

I have a 2.4m Silvermarine inflatable with airdeck and a 3.5hp Tohatsu. Both are relatively light which makes life easier.

I tie it to rear cleats for travel with the hull sitting sideways on the swim deck and firmly strapped down. This has proven a good way to do it for several open water crossings to an offshore island 14 nm away.

I would not recommend the anything heavier than this combo as it will affect bow/stern trim performance. Remember the AJ270 has a swim deck that is extended from the position of the original swimdeck on the 260DA so any weight on it will have increased leverage over the sterndrives ability to trim...especially if you are carrying a load. I typically ship 2 adults and 2 children plus full fuel and water plus bikes, food, fishing gear and water toys for this passage.

An additional issue is the swim deck is a bolt on item so I think it's ability to hold weight without damage is less than a fully moulded example.

A front tie down is an option except it will greatly impede access to the front cleats for mooring or tying up so I have not done this. It's also quite along way from the water on an AJ...in any event go the lightest combo that will do the job.

Happy boating.

Hi Uggboat,
Many thanks. I think I'm clear on that. If you have a pic handy it would be much appreciated. The boat I'm looking at is 73 pounds. What does yours weigh?
Looking forward to summer. Lots of salmon to catch!

Our dinghy weighs in at 32kg which is 76lbs without the motor. I won't be able to take a photo for a while as it's packed up and we won't use for a month or so.

There are about 25 or 30 310 Amberjacks on Lake Minnetonka in Minneapolis, MN. It is the perfect day cruiser!

Would love to talk about them
