Amberjack Thread -

I've got a 2002 340 Amberjack. I can't locate the a/c filter. I suspect it's/they are missing. Does anyone know where they are supposed to be located (under cabin entry steps)?

1. My 270 DA has the same LWL, but weighs a 1000 lbs less and has a 19 degree deadrise. With a carbed 300 HP 7.4 BIII and 26P props, it has good power cruising at 3600 RPM even with 6 people and food and gear for a week. Seems hard to believe you guys can get out of the hole with the deeper V, more weight, and a souped-up small block that puts out about the same as my 7.4. All the 270 AJs I see on the market have a 5.7 or 6.2 Magnum and almost never see a 7.4 or 8.1.

Do those motors perform well enough with similar loads? What pitch props do you run?

The 5.7 350 MAG was standard on the 2005/2006 models. It also output 300 HP. With a full load, it does get a little sluggish. 6 people and full gear would be a lot to ask; performance would take a hit. Generally I run 28 MPH @ 3800 RPM burning 16-17 GPH with the 350 MAG. The 6.2 was standard in later years with a bump in HP. It's probably better than my 350 MAG, and adequate for most needs. BTW, 6 people on the boat and trying to fish would be a bit crowded. If you regularly need 6 person capacity, I recommend looking for a bigger boat.

I have no idea what pitch the prop is. It's whatever Sea Ray put on. It is a dual prop Bravo III, which does improve performance, however.

2. Looking at pictures from brochures and boat listings, it appears that the mid-berth wasn't on the 2005-2006, but the
2007 and newer do. Can anyone give me some info on that?

The mid-berth definitely became available on the 2007 model year. Without the mid-berth, you get a huge storage area underneath the cockpit sole. It's accessed via a hatch between the forward seats. I store an amazing amount of stuff in there, including a PVC kiddie pool for my little ones. I'm not sure how wide the berth option, but should be the same for the same year of the 260 DA models - they have the same hull. With the berth, the stairs are fairly open and you access the berth to port.

3. I like the bait station, but not all the time. Some models had a seat behind the helm seat. Am I crazy to think about installing quick disconnects and hoist it out and put it back in when we are live bait fishing in the bay (only 4 months/year, but not every weekend)? We do 90% of our cooking on deck now, so we could use it as our outdoor galley, but just wondering if it really does take up a lot of cockpit space.

I have the rare back-to-back dual seat option for the seating space. The bait station option does take up a good bit of space, but the captains chair is more comfortable (higher up) than the back-to-back option. It is NOT possible to remove the bait station and replace it later. It is bolted and bonded in place; you would tear up the whole cockpit sole trying to remove it. How do I know? I wanted a model with the arch, with without the bait station and tried to get the dealer to remove it. They checking and found it's bonded in place; I confirmed it by examining the floor model. Plus, there are a number of electrical and plumbing fittings in there. D

4. Any updates on Sanchita's wakeboard tower upgrade? I bet you could get a 4' wake at 2200 RPM!

Can't help here. But the 270 AJ's wake isn't that big. It's fun for tubing, but likely wouldn't satisfy a true wakeboarder.

5. 270 AJ's are pretty scarce on the left coast, anyone have any idea about the cost of shipping one to California (yeah it's a lot, but still cheaper than going to SoCal and ordering a new one from the last Sea Ray dealer in the state...
No idea. But it's not on the 2010 Sea Ray model line up.

Appreciate the help![/QUOTE]

Great answers from the "Jennifer B" - Thanks!

Remove the aft settee cushion and look inside the storage area beneath it. If you look aft in that compartment, there are 2 removeable access panels. Remove the one closest to the steps and directly behind it you should find the A/C Unit and the filter.

Thanks Lake Erie Boater-I now have my weekend task.

To add to Jennifer B's excellent answer:

I have the 6.2 with BIII in our AJ270. With 2 adults and 2 children on board with full fuel and water we get about 14 - 15 GPH @22kts. (3900 rpm)

It is a little sluggish with 6 on board but acceptable.

Do you know what pitch props you're running?

No I don't or more accurately I can't remember.....I did look when I last had her out of the water. They are what came with the boat....WOT is at 5100rpm for 33.1 kts so it's about right.

I'll dive on her during the week and post next week end.

Oh come on, one picture...thats a tease.

I'm on the fence between the 290 Amberjack and the Wellcraft 290 Coastal. When the time comes to buy, I'll have to Sea Trial both and see.

More pics......pics of the engine bay would be nice too.

Congrats on the new purchase. have fun with her.

I have more in my photobucket account, I will post more of them tonight.

I had the same issue, I was in a toss up between this and the 290 Coastal as well. With the deal we got on this boat it was a no brainer! I had been leaning towards these for a long time, finally found one!

Youngin19 congrats!!! The 290's are great combos for cursing and fishing! I noticed that the boat was previously registered in Rhode Island. Does the boat have about 200 hours on the engines? Does it have a genset?

Thank you!

Yes sir, no genset and it has a little over 210 hours on the motors. This was a bank repo from a dealer in RI that went under.

I knew it! That boat was for sale at Bassett Boat Co. now Bassett Marine which was bought out by Marine Max. Marine max came in and bought up all of Bassett Boat Co's assets.
I purchased my current 270 AJ from Bassett in 2008. If you want to know what your boat was listed for before it was scooped up by the bank PM me! I was negotiating with Bassett for that boat back in September but they were not willing to budge on the trade in value of my current boat so I walked away.

Hello everyone. Just picked up our '07 270 Amberjack yesterday in SC and drove it on trailer back to Delaware. Been cleaning on the boat all day. So far I am very excited to get it out on the water. I was washing the cockpit pit down real good today. Went down and found the water at the bottom of the steps and the carpet was wet. Now, this boat has only been in the water once for 20mins in the last several months so I don't know whats going on. I read through some other threads but nothing seemed to fit. I'm not running the AC or any water systems and it hasn't rained in at least a week. Didn't know if washing down the cockpit somehow got water down into the bilge under the trash can. I did suck the water out of there with a shop vac. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. The wife is on me about it. Thinks we bought a defective boat. Besides that, hello, and hope to learn more from you guys. Thanks.
