A Florida based 1987 390 Express Restoration

Re: A Florida based 1987 390 Express Restoration - Bar Stool Base Restoration

I sent my cushions and bunks out to the upholsterer to get covered so I decided to restore the corroded, pitted bar stool aluminum bases. It took about 3 hours.

See the details in my blog:

Well, now I've got to do that to mine.

I have the same stools in my boat and was wondering how to clean them up..
Can you share which cleaners to use and I will make a trip to Harbor Freight to get he same buffer.

Thank you,
Yours look great.

Mark.

It's all in the blog. No cleaners, just sandpaper and polishing compound for aluminum.

Where did you get the LED lights for the panels. The console/dash looks awesome.

requires a 500ohm current limiting resistor in series to run on 12v. 1000ohms would probably be better because they are a bit bright. There are many other options. These do not fit the same hole as the original Sea Ray ones.

wow. look awesome what did you use to get the pits out?
Wet Sanding with progressively finer grits up to 1500. Deep pits require 320 then 400, 600, 1500
All Silicon Carbide paper. It is all in the blog.

I see you replaced all the roll up doors in the cabin. Do you happen to have the one that is used on the left liquor cabinet? Mine was taken out for a TV. If you do have it how much for it?

Sorry, no. Outwaterplastics.com sells tambour. Expensive but it is available. I hate those chip board tambour doors and replaced most of mine with hinged doors.

I have read that other 39 Express owners have built the center tab sponson. Anyone have the measurements so I can make one

Can you just add to the trim tabs???
buy a second set and over lap the tabs???
just a thought? I only had my boat for a few months it seemed ok

I installed my fixed tab last Spring and it works great. The original ones worked fine, but I can now stay on plane at approximately 600 RPM's less which equates to better fuel economy. Anyone can pm me with their email address for dimensions.

To All I just picked up mine in August from the insurance company it was damaged from Sandy, (it was in my budget being a divorced dad lol ) I have to say thanks everyone from sharing all this info. I learned so much. I was one of those guy that I thought I know it all..... I read this tread several times now and each time you pick up something new. So I'm counting the days for my wedding in April and counting the days to sand the teak and wax the boat. I got one of those mold cleaner sprays that you attach to the hose and filled it with car wash/wax and keep spraying down the boat every time I go their....

Micro,
this is my next job this winter after I finish the hard top. do you operate them with the outside tabs? If not do you use a single up down switch of both tabs? I was thinking of building the fixed tab, in fact i have the stainless plate in the shop, why did you go with hydraulics?

All 4 tabs are on the same circuit. Hydraulic fluid is incompressible therefore when you lower the tabs all will move at the same rate. Why did I install them? Because when you raise them there will be no drag. I also had 2 extra cyinders so all I had to buy were the small tabs. I also added fins per Bennet's recommendation. The boat is not in the water yet so I cannot tell you about performance.

Can't wait to see the hard top. Be careful with the geometry of the arch. Also the encapsulated wood supports of my arch was rotted as well as the wood in the mounting area in the cabin sides. Had to dig out and replace with epoxy. With all that extra weight you should consider beefing up the the support area on the cabin sides.

I had a similar problem with the encapsulated wood. I have repaired that with west systems and an embedded 1/4" stainless steel bar that is used as a backing plate. I have not fixed the arch yet, I will tackle that prior to finish work... I have some ipe to use for that.
thanks for the info on tabs

Wow, I just spent an hour or so reading this and saw it not end. I hope everything is turning out well for the new and improved classic.
