Occasional problems are the hard one's to figure out but perhaps someone has a good answer. My port engine will sometimes stall when the boat is first put into gear. But this happens only at the slip. The engine will lug down and there will brief valve clatter typically heard before it stalls.

If I take a ride and sit at anchor for a while when I start back up it never stalls when put into gear. At those times the engine starts fine and idles fine as well. The problem seemed to go away over the summer as I used the boat more often.

Yesterday it was a really nice day and with just a few of those left in the season here in New England I decided to take a ride. After not running the engines for about a month they still started and idled fine. Warmed the engines fully and put the boat in gear to back out of the slip. Same old problem of stalling when put into gear happened on the port engine. Restarted multiple times and the issue kept re-occuring. In fact once or twice on restart the engine would rev up a little above normal RPM's and then back down and stall. As though it was searching for the right idle speed.

Did not want to take a chance of breaking down so I tied the boat back up. Once that was done, a few minutes later I decided to try starting and putting it into gear one more time. Started fine and now could be put into gear and ran fine. So I went for a ride and there were no further problems.

I'm stumped and so is my regular mechanic.Anyone have the answer?????

Maybes:
Swap the IAC Valves and see if the issue follows...
Or the shift cable is out of adjustment...
Or it's the shift interrupt switch...
I had similar issue and it was the IAC Valve.

Do Not Do Swap IAC valves. Last year one of our members did that and succeeded in trashing both ECMs.
