480 DB Owners Club

480 Owners.... If you were to (or have) mounted an IP camera with I/R, in the engine room to send video back to your electronics screens, where would you place it? The cameras I have have a medium aperture (somewhat wide angle). Trying to decide if it is better up shooting back or from or aft shooting forward. I have two Garmin 8612 XSV units for display and will connect cams to the network. Only using one down there, the other shooting aft to see boats coming up behind me. Thoughts? Ideas? Experience?

TY,
Vince

>>Thinking of leaving the lights on in the bilge while under way to have a better view. Cam works better with light.

Not a 480 owner but I have cameras in the engine room. First, from my experience, you must use the Garmin cameras to integrate with the Garmin network. I have a Lorex IP camera system on the boat with IP low light cameras in the engine room. While the cameras are great they do not integrate with the Garmin network and I have to view through connectivity in the Garmin HDMI port. Consequently, the Garmin MFD's cannot switch the cameras; so, to look at a particular camera it has to be switched in the Lorex system. I've had a multitude of IP folks on the boat to get the Lorex system to communicate with the Garmin network with no joy at all. Anyhow, use caution on how you arrange the low light cameras as their IR emitters will interfere with the other cameras. On the other hand if the engine room lighting was on the pictures would be sharp colored and very clear. Here you can see two opposing cameras and the IR interference without engine room lighting on. These are snapshots from my home PC which has connectivity with the Lorex system; something the Garmin network cannot do. BTW no lights on in the engine room.

Is there anyone near North Palm Beach with 480 SB knowledge that would be willing to spend a few hours showing me the ins and outs of the 480 SB. We will be closing on a 2003 shortly and would be most appreciative of a few hours of your expert time.

Hi Doug. If you do not find anyone in your area, we are about 3 and 1/2 hours across the state from you (Palm Harbor) and I would be happy to spend a full day with you going over the boat. Our boat is also a 2003.

Best of luck with your new boat. She is a fantastic boat and you will love it.

Thanks Vince. We are in Punta Gorda, the boat is in North Palm. Expecting to close sometime in mid August and will bring it over then. Appreciate the offer, PM me at dmscheid@me.com

Has anyone replaced their lights on the hardtop with multi-color LED lights? I am looking for the part numbers or source so I can make the switch. Tired of the same old color. Would be nice to have the hardtop and floor lighting change colors.

TY,
Vince

1998 480DB with Detroit Diesels. Pros and cons? A friend is asking me about one that is for sale. I know nothing about Detroit Diesels.

We have one in our marina with 6-92 DDEC's. My mechanic says that the electronic parts are getting hard to find.

re: to user Doug Scheid's post above looking for someone to spend some time showing him "the ins and outs of the 480 SB".

Had a great time meeting Doug & his wife Patty aboard Lattitude Adjustment III last week while we were at Longboat Key. Doug took delivery of his 2003 480 Sedan Bridge this week and wanted to come by and get my input on the boat. We had a great time meeting with them, talking about our 03 480 and made some great friends along the way. I should have taken a picture of us for the group.

We look forward to meeting them again at Longboat Key, FL in their new 480. Best of luck to you both! Smooth seas and fair skies my friend.

Vince

I heard from some brokers that the Cummins (and MANS) are preferred over the Detroits. I cannot validate that for you though. I can say that we have had no issues with our Cummins QSM-11's and they seem to run very smooth and quiet. I sometimes wonder if they are running at idle. The generator seems to make more noise IMO.

My only real concern with the M-11 motors (now that I've reduced the pitch of my props) is the aftercoolers. I can't really find definitive or even guidelines on what the periodicity is for tearing down and inspecting the aftercooler cores. I have installed a freshwater rinse system, but it still make me a little concerned.

I'm interested in purchasing a Sea Ray 480DB Sedan Bridge. Can anyone clarify at what point Sea Ray eliminated the cored hull below the waterline on this model boat?

UPDATE: I called Sea Ray today and they informed me that Sea Ray 480DBs with hull numbers starting at #587 and above have solid fiberglass hulls below the waterline. #587 is a 2004 hull, so given that Sea Ray stopped making the 48 after 2004, I'm guessing there are very few solid fiberglass hulls out there.

There is no published data chart to identify the hull production number from your HIN. The only way to identify it is to call Sea Ray.

Dave - I think Tony Athens at sbmar.com has some good articles on Cummins aftercooler maintenance and reassembly...

I seem to remember every 1000 or 1500 hours run time. Mine have been done twice and I have 2300 hours on the engines. The second time was a natural as a part of correcting the exhaust leaks. The boat has lived it's entire life in salt water; when the coolers were serviced it appeared, really, there was no need for service other than a bolt inside of the aftercooler was stripped out.

Going back to the Sea Ray Systems Monitor Panel, is there a way to add a second alarm in the lower level so we can hear it downstairs? I am thinking of a common place where I could hear it at night when I am sleeping in one of the staterooms.

My hearing isn't the greatest as I was a traveling musician for many years and my ear's have taken a beating over time. I cannot hear the bridge alarm when I am downstairs which concerns me, especially after hearing Seadawg's comment about losing an AquaLock fitting and dumping water into the bilge.

I would think this has been discussed before, but the key words I entered in a search did not come up with much. I would imagine "ttmott's" route would get me there, but that is a major and pricey project (which I will eventually get to). I welcome any suggestions, comments or links.

Thanks,
Vince

Troubleshooting our own non-functioning System Monitor today... and comparing existing wiring to the schematic in our owner's manual...

There's an orange wire in the schematic specifically marked to be for an option external alarm... which could presumably be mounted anywhere. In our case, that orange wire isn't connected to anything.

As it happens, I didn't make much progress with our diagnostics. We have power to the Systems Monitor, all the of the rest of the connections "look OK" so far. Nada on the display. <sigh>

I have a new to me 2003 480 Sedan Bridge with Man D2876LE401 engines. How do you shut power off to the helm? It has keys in the Main panel, but power remains at the Man engine control levers. Note the keys needs to be on to start the engines.
Thanks for any advise.

For the 480DB owners out there, is there space in the 3rd cabin to use as an office workspace? It's hard to tell from the pictures. Setup would be to sit on the bed (would reconfigure for more back support) and build a custom rolling table as a desk for a computer monitor and keyboard so I could get in and out around it. I would need about 18" of floor space, give or take. Could maybe get by with 15". Pictures make it look like it's about 12" of floor space.
