480 DB Hydraulic Steering Leak - Servo Box

Just checked mine and it matches the new one you received. Obviously a design change at some point. Seems like a good 5/8" drill bit is in order.......

I'm not sure a drill bit would work. Well... not any drill bit I have. The piece that is welded on the rudder tie rod is something like 1/4" plate steel. Taking that tie rod out of there did not look very easy so I'm not going there.

I can get a bushing and a new bolt (longer) from McMaster Carr by Tuesday and press it into the bore on the ram and it should be fine. The question then is to go with a 316 stainless bolt like Teleflex provided or go with a grade 8 bolt because it is smaller... the bigger bore is 3/4" and the smaller bore is 1/2"... FYI

It looks like a good upgrade. Would it be out of the question to insert an aluminum/nickel/bronze sleeve to make up the difference?

That's what I'm talking about... but press it into the current bore to reduce it's size.

Actually, I just went down and looked at the bolt they provided:

What's wrong with that picture? There is no room for this bolt to mount to the tie rod... unless you like bolt threads rubbing the smooth bore wall in the plate on the tie rod... good grief... The smooth part of the the bolt (shoulder) needs to extend enough to cover the hole in the plate steel mounting hole on the tie rod. I wouldn't put that bolt on even if it did fit diameter wise. The old bolt has the shoulder long enough so it was put in correctly by Sea Ray. This new one should be sent out with a different bolt... I guess you really need to buy a bolt that fits the application though..

OK... I had a set of helping hands today at lunch and could put the head of this original ram under the press and push out the bushing that appeared to be in there. Sure enough, a brass bushing easily came out:

After that came out of the bore, the big honkin' bolt for the new ram easily fit into the bore of the old ram:

So... it appears this was a "Sea Ray" mod... Here's the crazy part. Look at this bushing they pressed in:

What a crappy job on the press! It looks like they ground down the top to taper it on a bench grinder and were really aggressive with it. Granted I have some miles under the boat but gee whiz... this looks like a nightmare waiting to happen down the road... bushing busts up... ram banging away on a 1/2" bolt... snap. I wonder if w!ngless is the dude operating the press at Sea Ray...

Anyway... new bushing and bolt will be here tomorrow to press in... It's a graphite SAE 841 bronze sleeve (3/4" OD and 1/2" ID) and a grade 8 steel bolt (plated)... more later.
