480 DB Hydraulic Steering Leak - Servo Box

Are you sure those are marine O-rings? $35 doesn't sound expensive enough to me.

There used to be a guy on this site that would rationalize that.......

By the time you factor in the cost of all those O rings, your time, headaches & the like. You could just add a large reservoir to hold extra fluid & go boating. What a cool mod. Extra fluid expense = $120. Just put a catch can under the drip & you are done!

Better yet, get a tiny electric pump from a fish tank and cycle the same leaked-out fluid back into the mechanism.

Well... No boating for me this weekend... and maybe half the damn summer. Got the part on my bench and a complete seal kit...

Here's the picture of the servo assembly with the area circled that is leaking. It appears to be coming out the little push rod.

Got the pushrod assembly out and the seal is obviously shot in the thing and it was scraping on the bottom of the brass piece. There is a noticeable (and I can feel it) scoring on the pushrod:

So if I put a new seal on that, it'll just leak again. This is a pretty simple part... wish I knew a machine shop...

Time to try and locate an HC5801-2

Gary, isn't Aaron in the machine shop business?

You don't expect to find a machine shop open on Saturday do ya? There's always next weekend...or duct tape and oil-sorbs.

Gary,

Look at the end of that rod in post #47, where is passes thru the cast piece. Why is the nut and washer loose? I don't know if you had begun disassembly or if it was that way in the boat. If it is that loose, it seems to me that the end of the rod will move and the internal pressure will cause enough deflection to create the wear and contact with the brass seal housing.

I doubt you will polish out that big a spot and ever get the seal riding there to hold fluid.

I had already started taking it apart when I snapped that picture. There was no play in thing before I loosened the nut...

These guys can turn out a Sea Ray shaft in three days. They can probably make a shaft for you.

Am I taking you off the list?

You snobby BASTARD.

I have a whole new assembly on the way (as of a few hours ago). The old one is getting a new servo push rod and will be in my spares bin.

Just for that, I'm not going to bring any hot dogs this year.

OK... I located a Teleflex-rebuilt unit that was on someone's shelf out in Washington state. I found these guys:

And this was the posting they had:

_______

NEW REBUILT (rebuilt by Teleflex)

RHC5801-2 HYDRAULIC CYLINDER

SEALED / UNOPENED BOX FROM FACTORY

This is a RHC5801-2 hydraulic steering cylinder that Teleflex has rebuilt (the R stands for rebuilt). The box is still sealed and unopened, I used stock photos so I didn't have to open it. Teleflex's rebuilt parts carry the same warranty as their new parts.

Todd called them for me since he's out there and can break their legs (or hide their car keys) if they are not legit. I called them today and talked to a guy named Mike and he was fairly knowledgeable and explained their relationship with Teleflex out of BC. He basically gets some of their returns and factory rebuilt items he sells. Seems like a decent way to go for me at this point.

I'm going to try and get the servo push rod repaired/replaced/machined and replace all the seals (including the rams) and stick it in my every-growing spare parts bin.

I'm wondering if the thing got damaged when I ran the system dry a few years ago when a hose blew on the engine PTO pump.
