48 DA Owners Club

Well I went ahead and changed out the aft Norcold mini fridge with a new 12 volt Vitrifrigo Ice Maker from Italy. We use a lot of ice on our boat and it was killing me this boat did not have an ice maker. Last boat had one and an inverter to run it. I was getting ready to go through all that to install an inverter when I came across this 12V unit from Italy. Found one in stock locally (I am lucky I live in the yacht capitol of the world) and decided to give it a try. required some "re-fitting" of the space with some Starboard but all in all easy install.

Good luck on your hunt. If you make it to South Florida let me know. I would be happy to give you a tour of mine and all I have done. There are a couple of nice ones for sale here and a bunch of junk also, if you come accross one down here let me know as I might have looked at it.

Thanks OC! I've definitely enjoyed following your journey on making your 48 into something special. I have noticed there are several 48s in South Florida, but its hard to find one that piques my interest. A lot do seem to sit and maintenance doesn't appear to be a priority for many owners. If I can make it to SF in the near future, I will definitely take you up on your offer to explore your boat- thank you! I'll also appreciate your offer to share intel on listed 48s- it will definitely save some wasted travel!

I was wondering who's 48 on here that was ;-) I've been looking at yours on BT since you listed it and I will say she appears to be in great shape Ray! Where in Tennessee do you keep her?
Thanks, it is a great boat. I’m in Nashville it is on Old Hickory Lake in a covered slip at Cedar Creek Yacht Club https://www.cedarcreekyachtclub.com/ east of the city.

Got two things checked off my to do list on my count down to weekending in Bimini soon. Rear shade complete and happy with that. Installed a rear view camera as I cannot see the swim step in this boat backing up and I don't like that. Now I have another camera for the engine room and I am thinking about putting one in the middle of the windshield in front of the glass an eyeball like this one mounted under the overhang tucked up tight. This way I can see the anchor and also future use for the augmented reality system that Raymarine offers.

That looks great was the camera plug and play into the updated Raymarine MFD’s.

Is that camera 12v or 120v? Also, what model # number if you don't mind?

Thanks,

-Tom

Camera is CAM220 it is a IP camera that plugs right into the Raynet network. Simple plug and play with Raymarine cables and a 12 volt power run.

You must have taken that pic at low tide as you are showing a depth of 3.4 Pretty shallow slip

I am in the process of have an aft sun fly made now.. Any reason you choose the straight poles that go in the rod holders? We where leaning towards custom poles that can be bent to achieve proper heights and ascetics with the lines of the boat. Would like to hear how yours came together as we are in the final planning of getting ours in the que to be made

Well I talked to several different captians and owners here with big yachts and sport fish. They all liked the original "SunFly" poles from Canvas Designers because they are solid, heavy, don't move around and superior hardware for attaching and adjusting the shade. I talked to a couple of guys who had "Black-Sticks" and one of them said he had broken 2 rod holders from the wind wipping the tension on the sail and the fact that it fits loosely in the holder. Couple other guys told me the same with the smaller stainless rods that did not fit tightly in the holders. As well as they all mentioned hardware issues where the shade attaches breaking. Down here there are a lot of real Captians that there life is spent running yachts so I trust their opinion and they all swear by the originals. Now I was going to go with the adjustable option for $500 more but opted out since these will be up everytime I take the boat out and store easily on the floor in front of the rear seat or down below in the aft cabin. Yes the colapsable versions are easier to store. Now my canvas guy would like to cut off a couple of inches from the pole height (72") as he wants them a little lower so where the canvas comes off the boat attachment point (factory slide in track) it will clear the overhang in a downward manor. I told him to hold for now as I wanted to play with it first since once you cut there is no going back. For me I like the "headroom" as I am 6'1 and have some tall friends. Now as for the look since the poles stick out at an angle based on the way Sea Ray installed the rod holders. Well I agree not my favorite but since I wanted the canvas to fill the whole channel side to side and get the most coverage (not just a "center section") they need this angle to achieve the geometry inorder to maximize size and tension. I think there are a lot more options coming on the market now as these new shades are all the rage. I was stopped twice on Friday in the ICW by people asking where did I get those poles and shade, so i am sure we will see more inovation in the years ahead from these companies.

I installed a deck hatch onto the plexiglass cover to have easy peasy access to the sump box for cleaning on regular basis. Only use liquid soaps and add directly to the sump a cleaning agent on a regular basis when you are running so it sloshes around and helps clean the sump.View attachment 81216

Could I ask where you bought the deck hatch you installed? Great idea. I also have the dreaded Sea Ray sump box. When we bought the boat late last year it was pretty gummed up, and I have spent hours getting it cleaned out, new hoses etc.

Anyone have a squeaky steering column? Mine is squeaking when turning and does not appear to be coming from the pump section but the upper part with the u-joint and I assume bearings?

I had a squeaky steering mechanism....called Sea star and they seemed to know instantly to replace the tilt mechanism with a new design part.... not to bad to replace yourself.

If you have the same manufacturer call them ...this is a pic of the new design...they have good customer service

I've done this job. Matter of fact I removed everything from the toilet bowls back and rebuilt everything including the pumps. I also took the opportunity to remove my water heater and bow thruster batteries to make the job easier and so I could repaint the entire area. There's nothing easy about this job and it took me an easy 10 hours. But, like I said, I rebuilt the entire sanitation system including the hoses to the holding tank and to the discharge. I'd be glad to give you any information you need. I think the total parts with the hose, toilet rebuild, vac pump rebuilds ran me about $1,000 which isn't bad considering you end up with a new sanitation system. Attached is a picture of the area with the pumps and water heater out and a contraption I made up to be able to pull the hose while my helper pushed from the bilge.

Tks ocgrant
im just afraid now PO may have done some chop job making this way worse... Stay tuned...
I did not have any clamps on the hoses running from the VacuPumps to the bowls. The only challenge I had is what OC mentioned. I had to cut away the bulkhead sealant but you'd know if that's the issue as you can see where the sealant is on the bulkhead.
