Jeffery,
Thanks for the insite again. Yes I am figuring I will have to replace one of the 2 aftercoolers as the odds of them both still good are 50/50. Heat exchangers I am figuring they will clean up fine for their age. Sanitation hoses he checked and swipped them and said they were not smelly so no issue there...yet. Keep in mind they never used the heads on this thing the past 3 years.
What do you know about the turbos, the surveyor mentioned that something was leaking on them but did not elaborate and said it will all be in the report. I would think they should be rebuildable??? Possible seal???[/QUOTE
@ocgrant I would pull the wet side of the exhaust and look for visible signs of corrosion in the turbo. The way the exhaust elbow/riser bends upward allows water to reside in the elbow or flow back into the turbo. If you haven't visited the seaboard marine site, I would highly recommend it. It's a wealth of knowledge. If you're pulling the aftercoolers, you might as well pull the exhaust side of the turbo for inspection. Also, if something is "leaking" did he specifically call out the turbo or is it the exhaust flange? If you're pulling the exhaust side, I'd check the exhaust flange for possible crack or a need for a new exhaust gasket. I've included a picture of the exhaust elbow. You can see how the seawater can flow back into the turbo vs out the exhaust. Keep in mind, I'm no expert, I've learned this all via tribal knowledge. I went to the local Cummins dealer awhile back and asked them about doing the aftercooler work and the guys there looked very confused when I said "aftercooler". I figured I'd have a better chance of figuring this out myself than letting them work on my boat. I've had a great time working on this thing and it gives me something to do.Let me know if you have any additional questions, I'd be glad to help.
