48 DA Owners Club

Guys, looking to step back into a Sea Ray again. Looking at a 2006 48 Sundancer down here in Miami only 650 hours on her 2 owner. What top items should I be looking at on this boat?
Sanitation hoses
Aftercoolers
Heat Exchangers
Packing Glands
Exhaust side of the turbos...The wet exhaust hose goes into the exhaust elbow at an angle that may cause water to settle back into the turbo. This will cause corrosion in the turbo or worse, leak water back into the cylinder.
At 650 hours, the air separators need to be cleaned or replaced and the coalescer filters should be replaced. This is an easy job but still $550. Not huge but still shows boat may not have been maintained.

Anodes should have been replaced regularly
Inspect transmission coupler or bell housing area for black dust.

I bough my boat knowing I'd have to do all this. The next owner will be very happy! lol Let me know if you have any questions.

Guys moving forward on the purchase of the 48 but wife had a question.

*what do you do for cushions when you slide out the couch downstairs and make it a bed? Did Sea Ray provide cushons to fill in and make this a bed? Anyone have pictures of this?

Yes...three filler cushions that match your L-shaped settee. Mine are put away for the winter.

Where do they usually store them?

Also,

Where do i find the plastic channel that holds the canvas that mounts on the back of the hard top? This boat has a 12" section that is cracked so the canvas on the starboard side dose not stay in the track.

There are 3 cushions that are normally stored under the couch. I don't have a pic, and the boat is currently in storage.

Look for the cushions under the twin bedding in the aft stateroom there is built in storage under each twin bed. I bet you will find them there.

Sail rite.com has everything you need.

10-4 I will check today!!! Thanks

next question:

the smart craft engine display is working but looks like crap on the screen.
1. what is the fix if there is one?
2. can it be ugraded to a nicer display?
3. can it be fed into the Raymarine screens (e-series)

If its that white channel so the canvas Keder welting slides into then Sailrite.com carries it; it's called Flex-A-Rail. Sailrite also has an installation video.

You can replace it with new current versions very easily. I like to have the vessel view for my engine monitoring. I had the axiom and it was capable of integration. The E series is an older platform though. Check out SBMAR.com for all Cummins info. They also have a replacement kit for the vessel view.

Found them exactly where you said.... Thank you

Ok Survey went well for the most part. The typical stuff that when a boat doesn't get used stops working on a boat. Now the engines with 650 hours is my biggest concern. This boat has been a taxi on the ICW for the past few years never entering the ocean. So probably last 200+ hours have been at idle.

Aftercoolers never serviced
Heat exchangers never serviced
Turbos leaking between some seal in the turbo

Oil samples taken and should get results next week.

Now even though i can do all that myself, when I buy a new boat I want to use it not spend a month working on it. Any idea what I can expect to spend on this to have these items above serviced? Waiting on the final survey results next week but want to get an idea of what I am looking at.

Next, surveyor said one of the port side "three windows" is showing signs of being "loose" Nothing is leaking as we checked it but he says they need to be resealed to prevent from poping out. Any idea on the cost of this repair?

Looking forward to hear from you all...

If you'd like detailed information on all of this let me know. I've spent the last 9 months bringing my 48 up to speed. I pulled the port aftercooler about 3 weeks ago and it looked great when I opened it up. I sent it to SeaBoard Marine for service and one of the O rings had failed which led to corrosion around the lip. I had to buy an entire new aftercooler at about $4K. It just got delivered today. Also, I had the oil/fuel cooler cleaned and have yet to get that back. Now keep in mind, the boat ran perfect and never had heat problems and had only 500 hours when I bought it. All said, I'll be into just the Port aftercooler for $5K. I still need to pull the Starboard one. At this point I have no idea how I'm going to get to it. Also, did you have the sanitation hoses checked? If they haven't been replaced, they're going to have to be done. I did my entire sanitation system...Pulling the hoses through the PVC is a complete B**ch...At one point, I thought it wasn't going to be possible. Glad to help you out if you're interested. Good luck and the 48 is awesome! One more thing, my old core pressure tested out fine and I had it cleaned as a spare. If you're in need of a core, I might be willing to part with it.

Jeffery,

Thanks for the insite again. Yes I am figuring I will have to replace one of the 2 aftercoolers as the odds of them both still good are 50/50. Heat exchangers I am figuring they will clean up fine for their age. Sanitation hoses he checked and swipped them and said they were not smelly so no issue there...yet. Keep in mind they never used the heads on this thing the past 3 years.

What do you know about the turbos, the surveyor mentioned that something was leaking on them but did not elaborate and said it will all be in the report. I would think they should be rebuildable??? Possible seal???
