460 DA Owners Thread

Okay it's been a while, what's every been up to? We are having all the cockpit vinyl replaced and a camper back canvas made-also some carpet runners! We had a great season in EG RI - just ended! So what is new with everyone?

Russ, you mention redoing the cockpit vinyl, are you going to Sunbrella? Ours is done in Sunbrella and it is absolutely beautiful! I have the camper back, too, and it is an amazing "living room". I have very few posts and this is an amazingly stable set up. Let me know if you need photos!

fr8dog- Your trip sounds fantastic! Enjoy the ride! Are you doing the aftercoolers yourself? That Starboard engine scares the hell out of me.

I finished my wine, champagne glass rack in the cabinets and now carry 24 Reidel glasses for the admiral. ;) All very well protected.
It was a fantastic year-150 running hours. Lots of smiles!

Happy Holidays!

Stuart, Would love to see some photos of your wine glass storage. 24? Reidel no less, Impressive. I'm not sure I would trust our usual pax with glass, let alone nicer glass.

Yes the stbd. aftercooler is a tough one. Too much for me. I hired a local 140 pound mechanic do do the R&R. I did the R&R of the port and the refresh of both coolers per the Boatdiesel.com instructions. I did this two years ago and did find calcium deposits at the bottom of the aftercooler this time.

Hello all,

Hope all is well with you and your 460's. We took the boat to Key West for New Years Eve, and had a great time. Great weather and great crowds. Our wedding anniversary was the 30[SUP]th[/SUP] so a special night.

We are home now and the latest upgrade is underway. The boat is getting new carpet! It is quite a job. I have removed the couches both main and aft and now the carpet installer is hard at work. The first day was removing the old carpet. At the end of the second day the aft stateroom is done as well as the steps in the Master. One more day to do the main salon. Following that another day for me to put everything back together.

We looked closely at installing a wood floor but the Admiral decided the carpet was just a bit more cozy.

I'll post some pics when the job is done. Take care all!

any pics? Cost?

Russ, Nice to see some activity from 460 bunch. Just waiting for spring to come. As usual counting days to MAY. Hope all is well with you and family.

Here are a few pics of the new carpet installation. It was quite a job. I first removed the salon and aft state room couches. Also the Bose system located under the salon couch. The couches were to large and awkward to take outside, so they were transferred as necessary, between the aft and main areas. All the baseboard carpet was stapled and glued to fiberboard pieces and screwed to the wall. It was a matter of locating the screws for removal. Then the installer came in for the removal of the old carpet. It was glued to the floor but was not that difficult to remove. The carpet on the steps, both front and aft, were stapled and glued. New pad was glued down then the carpet. My installer did an awesome job. The only seam is behind the salon couch. To accomplish this, 45 yards were required. The labor and misc. materials cost was $1200. I thought a bargain. Two men three and one half days. The carpet and pad was $1300. One of those projects that take a bit of work, but very worth it in the end.

Sorry for the sideways pics. Try as I might, I could not rotate them

That seems like a very good price for all of that work! I look forward to pictures of the completed install.

Very nicely done Mike....very nice !

Was in your neighborhood last week delivering a new 650, wish I would have stopped by to see this beauty as well.

post script....if you ever need a job, your work is your resume.

wow! That's great - thank you for sharing that. Were these marine carpet guys or just carpet guys? What kind of carpet did you use?
Off topic question - do you fly professionally ? (Fr8 Dog)

Russ,

I'm very happy with the carpet project. The installer has quite a background. He has carpeted small boats to cruise ships. He usually does more normal installations though. The carpet was a normal carpet called “smart strand” with a 5 pound pad. The carpet Sea Ray installed had the pad as the backing of the carpet.

Yes to the other question. I've been flying for UPS for almost 28 years. Good catch ( fr8dog )

Thanks for the info Mike. I have a good friend, flies for FedEx- named his boat as such.

Can anybody throw opinions out here regarding Shaft seals.

My boat is fitted with Tides Seals, both were leaking when I got the boat, I had someone remove the seals and fit the spare seals that were on the shafts.

One of the seals still leaks badly when underway and the other leaks a little bit.

Has anybody tried any later model or different types of seals, I am concerned because it is a big job and I would like to give the biggest chance possible of success when fitting complete new seals.

The ones I see possible to use are Tides again or Lasdrop seals.

Any experience or comments greatly appreciated.

Graham

Graham, I checked with my mechanic and he recommends the Tides.

Thanks, I will pick up a pair of complete new model Tides Sureseal, they say they are better than the originals that are currently fitted on my boat, these are the ones with straight blue rubber parts, not the convoluted ones of the Sureseal.

Does anybody by chance know the shaft diameter and the tube that the seal fixes to?

Second issue, has anybody had an issue with hyraulic fluid leaking from the steering unit directly below the helm, before I dive in there it would be a great help to find out what I will be looking for and maybe an indication of what the problem may be.

Thanks

Graham

Not to change the subject, but I've got a different question about my 460. My cabin door needs new rollers so I'm going to change the track and all the parts I can get from Flounder Pounder. Can anyone give me a heads up or any tips on this job? Thanks

Question on thrusters -
I have a bow and stern thruster on my 460DA. After the boat sat for a number of months I had a loss of power at my bow thruster so I started to diagnose.
I found that both my wet cell thruster batteries would charge but would not pass a load test - exchanged them for some AGM's.
Then my bow thruster worked, but spins at a high rpm. Much higher than it has during my 4 years of having this boat.
Next checked the thruster motor ... it is a 12V motor (95 kgf) but has been run from a 24V source since I have had the boat.
I called Vetus to verify if in fact the motor is a 12V, they were of little help since each person I talked to gave me opposite information using the same model number.
Then I called Florida Bow Thruster, great guy and verified that yes it was a 12V and should be run from 12V power but what about my stern thruster he asked - turns out it is 12V as well.
All of the information that I have on the boat states that it has 24V thrusters, the batteries are in series for 24V and charger is Promatic 21-3 for 24V system but each thruster is a 12V motor ... doesn't make sense to me.
I have not called Sea Ray yet.
Does anyone have experience with this?
