460 DA Owners Thread

I'm pretty sure this topic has been covered somewhere but I'm doing it again. Does anyone else have a water problem, as in not enough and how are you all dealing with it? It's about the only real complaint I have, just not enough water- what were they thinking with two heads, showers, ice maker, washer dryer and spickets everywhere??!

Russ,

There are only two realistic options:

1) add custom tank
2) install water maker

I wish there would be more, but I don't know them. I also would love to have greater water supply. I looked into buying one and best price for 20gph was around $6k.

Most people here tend to use their boats for long weekends and week long outings. Those who use all the water using appliances freely have added water makers to their boats. Those who anchor out during the day and go back to their slips at night just refill the boat tank at night when they get back.

I agree Russ, the 100gal water supply is marginal. I carry 2-3 6gal reserve tanks in the Summer. God forbid the Admiral run out of water during her shower! LOL!

Frank, what are most folks choosing for water Makers?

Alex, what was your conclusion?- which unit?

While I have no first hand experience, I have been told by those that have purchased water makers they are a PIA. My wife and I have been able to go a week in the Dry Tortugas on the 100 gallons. We brought bottled water for drinking, coffee etc. and used minimal water for showers. Not that she would, but I bathed in the bay and used the transom shower to rinse. With a little thought you can make that 100 gallons last quite a while.

Just an update on the Cummins thermostat discussion and I don't know if this helps anybody's decision or not.

I spoke with my marina neighbor with a Cummins equipped early 460DA. He's the fellow who is an owner in a marine diesel service. He said there is quite a bit of safety built into the Cummins system and the boat can use hotter thermostats. However the only advantage would be a cleaner combustion and less sooting. He said that performance would not improve a great deal operating with the higher temperatures stats.

So that's his opinion. I guess I will stick with the 160 degree thermostats for now because I often cruise near the 80% range and have almost no soot issues anyways.

That is good to know James, thanks for posting. I recently had Cumming out for my Valve Lashing and asked about the t-stats, too. The corporate response was to retain the thermostats that were in the motors when they were installed.

One item I did discover, I've been experiencing a vibration that had me going crazy. The Cummings mechanic took out my ECMs and " flashed". Unfortunately that cleared my hour meter, but updated my software. :(
In the end, there was a discrepancy between RPMs of the motors enough to cause
"inharmonization
As it turned out, after 3-4 hours of
Screwing around, there is a mechanical adjustment for the throttles under the stainless cover of the throttle!!!

I had my ECM calibration updated recently. On the stbd. engine the hours were wiped. We had noted the hours prior to the update, so the tech pulled the ECM and sent it to a Cummins engineer in Tampa. He put the hours back in to the nearest hour. Lost the minutes (13). This was not a big deal, and the local Cummins picked up the tab.

Thanks Mike! Yes, spoke to Cummins this AM and they said it could be corrected in just a few minutes by a tech and a computer. Whew!

Here's a couple of pics of the latest upgrades. The boat had an RL80 and a cover plate where a Sea Ray navigator used to be. It failed and was removed by an earlier owner. I had Technograpic make a matching backing plate for the two new Ray E125's and the Clarion head.

To all the guys on this site who gave guidance on how to run some cables from the helm position on my 460 through to the Distribution Power Board in the Saloon, a big thanks.

The advice was great to get the cables through and solved a problem that has caused me no end of grief.

Well done guys and thanks.

Graham

Here is another installation I completed this winter. The panel was made for me by Borel. It was sized to cover the hole in the dash where the Sea Ray Navigator mouse had been. The raw water sensors are located just downstream of the exhaust elbows. If the raw water stops for any reason I get an alarm. The temp sensors are 205 degree installed in the manifold where an existing plug was. These are a backup for the existing alarms. Sorry the pic is sideways!

First, I hope all are enjoying the summer months on your 460's!! We have made several trips North and South in the Gulf. From Sarasota to Key West. The boat is running great!! Next I would like to thank Doozie and Graham for an earlier discussion about routing cables from the helm to the electrical panel in the salon. I just added a Wi-Fi system and a Cat 5 cable needed to go from the antenna to the router inside. This earlier discussion saved the day!!! What looked like an ordeal was quite easy with this information. Again Thanks!

So glad you were able to use previous information posted.

I have just returned from 2 weeks on the boat, running a cable for an Inverter mounted in the engine room was so easy once I knew where to find the holes to run the cables through.

The power of this forum!

Okay it's been a while, what's every been up to? We are having all the cockpit vinyl replaced and a camper back canvas made-also some carpet runners! We had a great season in EG RI - just ended! So what is new with everyone?

We have had a great summer and fall. Still mid 80's here. I am finishing up the annual maintenance items plus servicing both aftercoolers. We are taking the boat to Key West for the New Year holiday then up the east coast of the Keys to Marathon, Key Largo etc. Looking at two or three weeks for the trip. There will be other Club Sea Ray people in Key West for the holiday, and we look forward to meeting some of them.

Hello Russ,

Just curious if you got a quote on building the camper back? Would like to do the same with our 1998 450.
