460 DA Owners Thread

Hello team, again new to the 460 and to this forum. I am staying with the Sherwood water pump housings for now, how on earth do you get to the Starboard pump to change the impeller? I am sure you guys have talked about it, any help is appreciated.

Welll...
First what do you like to drink? .... go ahead and have four of them. There is not a easy way to change it. Some have removed the pump from the block and then you have full access to the pump and makes for a quick change others leave the pump on and work blind on getting the impeller in.

I have done both and it is usually my mood of how frustrated I want to be. If you have someone that is smaller... I am lucky on that as my girlfriend is and she can get in between the engine and starboard side of the boat and she gets it changed out fairly quick.

Long story short there isn't a easy way.

Zip tying the fins on the impeller is a must to get it in.

Thanks, it certainly looks challenging to say the least. Do most people pull any of the exhaust to get back there? Do they go in from the stern side (back of boat, front of engine) or from the transmission side? I am not the skinniest guy in the world....

Thanks,

Back side, do you mean trans side (back of engine) or front of engine that is at the back of the boat?

Thanks,

Starboard pump, as mentioned is difficult with the OEM Sherwoods. After dropping the "key" down the intake hose my first time (and using the rest of the day to disassemble everything) I took the port pump off and changed the impeller on the bench. Sherwood impellers only lasted one season so I switched to the SMX pumps 12 years ago and very glad I did.

As Joint Custody said, do the job from the aft of boat. Easiest if you have tools ready and wedge yourself between the motor and the cablemaster drum.

With the better pump, it's a 20 minute job with their easy extraction tool and replacement with either zip ties or using the "tomato soup can trick" (inserting the pre-loaded can into the SMX chamber). Impellers are splined; no key to drop. Port side takes less time. I replaced my 4 year old SMX impellers this spring and they were in good shape, no cracks, just a little softer than new. (we are in freshwater) With the Sherwood pumps, I changed them every year and often missed a couple of blades which I retrieved from the bottom of the aftercooler with an inspection camera.

In my opinion, install the SMX pumps and save yourself some frustration.

Hi everyone, not sure who else is near me (Annapolis, Md) but I just took all of my "Corinthian" carpet out of my boat and replaced it with HydroDeck. If anyone's interested, I'll make you a deal on my 460 carpet. prefer to NOT ship.

How hard is it to install the SMX pumps? Is it bolt on? I read somewhere that on some installs the engine had to be jacked up a little.

It will fit perfectly on your 480CE. I replaced both Sherwood pumps first year I owned the 460. Never a problem.

That is good to hear. Did you have to lift the engine to get to the bolts?
No lifting required. The stbd pump is not easy to get to if you have the shore power cord drum but doable. Port is easy. The SMX pumps are a worthwhile purchase.

Yes, it's a straight swap. As said, port pump is more difficult to access but I was removing the Sherwood pump for the impeller change anyways, so I had practice. You won't regret the SMX and they do pump more water! Impellers will last longer too.

This is worth the. spend to do this.

When I swap mine out all and all it was a hour job. Starboard took most of the time and as others has said it is a better pump, boat runs cooler, and the impellers last longer.

Does anyone know the exact length of the 460 without the swim deck on.
Bow pulpit to the stern.

I am looking to store my boat this winter to do some work and finding a 60ft deep shop has been hard to come by.
I found a 50 deep but don’t know if it will work

The length from pulpit to stern is 48'-7" With the standard swim platform it is 51'-4" Also as I recall with the GHS platform it was 53.4

Need a little guidance - head pump sensor shows half full despite being just pumped out.

Is there one sensor or two and is there any suggestions on how best to address?
