460 DA Owners Thread

Well its that time of year when the family and I don't get to use the 460 that much due to pee wee football and volleyball seasons. So its time to do some upgrading and my main focus right now is the electronics. I still have the old Raymarine RL80 and I am having a tough time finding a chartplotter I like to fit back in the hole or close to it. I have been looking at going back to Raymarine but Garmin has some really nice units as well. I plan on adding Sirius Weather and a new Radar. Any suggestions on what you guys have done in the past?

If you are going with Raymarine, the classic C120 is almost a perfect fit. The C120 isn't quite as tall, so some trim is needed to finish it off.

I'm in the process of upgrading, Raymarine sent an email out with a close out on C140W units. I bought 2. I have my marina doing some fiberglass work to make them fit. I'll post pics, but I may not finish it till winter

Does anyone know how to increase the water pressure from the dock?

You can replace the water inlet regulator. I don't know how to verify the condition of the old one, I have replaced them in the past and it did make a difference.

Electronics: When I bought the boat in early '08 I decided to update the electronics. I have an E-120 above an E-80 (couldn't fit a second 120). This necessitated changing out the radar so I went with the 4kw 48" HD antenna. Added a DSM300 (which I've replaced the board once), a Ray 218 VHF (because it was part of the package at the time) and a new GPS antenna. The next year I added the SR-100 Sirius weather (which I think was the best addition of all) and two Garmin cameras (reverse image, color and I.R.), one under the hardtop for backing up (rarely use it but it's cool) and one in the Engine Room (which I really like to toggle to while running). The two E screens fit nicely where the RL70CRC and autopilot used to be but we had to source a burled panel to match for the trim. A new lower dash was secured from Sea Ray and the old autopilot ST 7001+ was used. I now am having trouble with it and it is in Raymarine's hands for service to the gyro in the board.
All in all a pretty good set-up but not without it's hiccups. I ended up putting in a transom mounted second transducer that feeds the Tridata because I was having some problems with the DSM300 sonar. I'm sure Garmin would be good as well but I wanted to keep things looking factory but updated.
Have you noticed what the big sportfish yachts run? Often it's Furuno radar, Northstar chartplotter, etc.....

Water inlet: I replaced the regulator last year and found that it didn't make that much of a difference. It is regulated to a lower p.s.i. than the onboard pumps are. Some people run the pumps and the shore water at the same time. Not sure if the water pressure is better than the shore water alone. Any thoughts?

water inlet:

If you have a old regulator it's likely a 35PSI version, they now sell a 45 PSI version which is closer to what you get from your on-board pump.

10 psi makes that much difference? I have good pressure with the pumps but horrible when connected to the dock. But even connected when using pumps I have to fill the tank. Another brilliant idea, right next to feeding genny on one tank only.

The combination of a new regulator and 10 PSI makes a difference. They do wear out.

Thanks James, do you have any photos of your helm layout since you added the E-80 and E120? I have been looking at the Garmin products as well and everyone says they are a lot more user friendly compared to Raymarine.

This might give you an idea of our set up.

Thank you for that information, however I am positive (having spent numerous hours upside down in this area), that the water in the bilge behind the sofa is not coming from the overflow from the shower / galley drain sump. Also the water that ends up in the under sofa bilge, is totaly clean, it has none of the crap in it that accumulates in the shower / galley drain sump.

Any ideas where else it may be coming from?

Hi Guys

Think I may finally be able to answer my own question here.

Early this summer I had the screen panels above the windscreen totally replaced. The old ones had shrunk and it was almost impossible to re-clip them back into place after removal, and when ever I washed the boat down, or it rained, water would leak between the top of the glass windscreen surround and the flexi screens and their canvas surrounds. This water was always evident across the top of the dash panel and around the edges running all the way back toward the rear of the cockpit.

Since the new flexi glass screens were fitted, no more evidence of water leaks, and zero water in the bilge in the aft cabin, so I think it was rain water leaking through and ending up in the rear cabin bilge.

Hope this helps someone else.

I can't stand my inflatable Zodiac dinghy!! I would really like a rigid dinghy but the weight difference is substantial. I have been looking at the Boston Whaler 110 sport, but it weighs 424lbs without the motor. Has anyone else found a good alternative to an inflatable dinghy?

I have a Walker Bay 340 with a 20hp Honda, console, etc. The WB RIB is plastic mold injection instead of fiberglass so it weighs a lot less. I carry it on the swim platform and the boat doesn't seem to notice. Nice setup.

Thanks Graham and Jerry. Jerry looked up the WB 340 DLX and that is one sweet tender! According to the spec sheet it weights about 450lbs plus motor and fuel. Your 460 doesn't notice the weight? My Zodiac I have now weighs about 115lbs plus motor and fuel.

I also have a Walker Bay 340 Genesis Console Deluxe and mine has a 30hp Nissan 4-stroke on it.

Here are the pluses and minuses in my opinion. I bought the tender to have relatively light weight for its size and power. It's fast and a nice ride in smooth water. Get some chop though and a heavier fiberglass tender might ride a bit better but that's a trade-off. For weekends and shorter trips I have the dinghy on the platform but when we run to Northern Michigan then speed and fuel efficiency are important so I usually leave it behind and save the 450 lbs. Otherwise we have it on the platform most of the time and it doesn't really affect the boat's handling too much.

Thanks for the great info Jaws!! I feel better about the weight issue hearing it from you and Jerry. I really wanted to get away from the inflatable ribs but I really like the WB340 setup.
