460 DA Owners Thread

Hey Doug,

I would have said tin and lead from bearings...but my ME degree is 50+ years old, so no money bets from me!!

I did have hi iron on both my trans after I installed my shaft Spurs. Twin Disk said they probably shifted the load and it would normalize. It did by the next samples after a change

Ben There

I Pm'd you my thoughts. Call of PM if you want to discuss.

I've had my 460 Sundancer since late December. Everything that HAD to be done to it has been completed. Bottom painted and new zincs. Engine, Generator, and some other hoses replaced. Hydraulic Steering Unit Replaced. Guest head rebuilt. Water Accumulator replaced. Now its time to do what I WANT to do to customize the boat to my specifications. Hope to get this accomplished in the next month or so. Kind of a windy, rainy winter and haven't had a chance to use the boat anywhere near the amount of time I would have liked to use it. Will be writing a check to have new Garmin equipment to include Chartplotter, Radar, and Autopilot and FLIR Camera installed over the next several weeks. Raymarine E120, Radar and Autopilot coming out and will probably sell on ebay.

Previous owner did the annual in June of 2019 so I'm thinking I will do it again but in April or May so I can get a head start in front of the summer boating season. If the weather breaks here soon, I will have put nearly 100 hours on the engines since taking delivery of the boat.

This past week I shampooed the carpets and it looks a lot better. Previous owner left lots of goodies in the engine room and in the process of collecting, organizing, and either tossing it out or planning on the best place to keep it. My wife and I went into the storage lockers in the main salon to take out and organize all that was left behind....lots to tools, filters, drive belts, plates, drink ware, etc. Tossed out what we didnt want or what was non serviceable and have organized in plastic storage bins.

I find myself at the boat nearly everyday doing something and I really am enjoying that. I remember those days when I had boats over 25 years ago and was doing something with or on a boat on my days off. Now that I am happily retired, I find this to be a real joy of being on the boat, even while its tied in its slip. Almost no comparison to owning an airplane. With an airplane, one shows up at the airport to preflight it, go somewhere and then return to tie it down and tell the mechanic what needs to be fixed. The only time I sat around in the airplane was when something new was installed and I sat with the manual to learn the complete operation of the new gizmo. Now, I find myself sitting in one of the seats, sipping on a can of soda, and simply enjoying the parade of boats going up and down the ICW. Life is good.

Finally had a chance to get back on the boat yesterday...completed my AC vent install update along with new Autopilot head unit and core.

The boat has been "under cover" for the past 3 weeks while my fiberglass guy is doing a little gel job. :)
When we purchased the boat we noticed spider web cracks in a couple locations on each side of the boat. the PO said it was from it being in a sling at some point and it was too tight (??)..nonetheless, the cracks were at the "sling" locations, so I figure he is right. Of course my guy wants to blend out the gel job 3' each side of the cracks...and wouldn't you know it, we found some more cracks 3' out, then some more 2' out...so the overall length of the repair is 23' on each side...LOL But boy will it look good when it is done!!!

My wife announced to me yesterday that she wants the TV's upgraded on our boat. The previous owner put in a flat screen in the master suite that is so small one might need a magnifying glass to see it. The other two TV's are original. We made the decision to pull the TV out of the rear bedroom and use the space for storage. The TV in the main salon will be the one I replace and would like to put in a TV somewhere in the range of 32" to 40" which probably means it will need to be relocated from its original position over the refrigerator. I searched the Forum but could not find anything regarding this issue. Has anyone put in a larger TV in the main salon and where did you put it? How did you hide the wiring? I would think it would need to be relocated as there is not enough room above the freezer. We thought that space would make a nice storage that is above the freezer.

We put ours on the outside wall of the shower and ran the wires through the ceiling by pulling out the lights and then pulling the wires from the old location. It really wasn't difficult. I even ran a HDMI cable back to the old location in addition to the power and cable wires so that I can keep a DVD player in the cabinet above the freezer. I then turned that cabinet into a great storage area for liquor, cups and blender.

Anyone know the length of the teleflex throttle cables on the 460? I think we may have snapped one today.

weird thing is it wasn’t working, then jiggled the throttle linkages back and forth and it mysteriously started working. Then stopped again. Could it be something other than a bad cable?

Is that a different rear (ice chest) ac vent? If so, why did you switch. I've got my system on order and am getting ready for installation.

It is...I finally found a way to make it work and direct the air better into the cockpit. It isn't actually finished being installed, it is just sitting there. Hopefully will get back to it this weekend. I had to custom order it from Marine Parts Source and can give you his contact if desired. It is taking a little modification to sit properly, but I will get it done.

This damn virus thing has really messed up my Spring. I had 800 people going to Singapore and Bali next week...500 of them had custom ticketed itineraries with upgraded seats etc. etc...you can imagine what I am going through right now with all these issues in the USA. 3 weeks ago, it was all about going to Singapore and the issues they had...now, it has nothing to do with them and all with us...Go figure!!!

Main sump for shower, sinks etc.

Has anyone replaced the bilge pump in the main shower sump with a pump that has an automatic float switch built in? I want to get rid of the 2 part system and go to the single pump with built in float and get rid of the float on the "upper" level of the box.

If you have done this change out.... pros/cons???
Thanks

I also installed a Water Witch switch about 7 years ago.

The best part of it is the 14 second shut down after the water level is below the switch, it means the sump gets a much better drain than with a normal float switch.

Want to thank the Forum for some really good information on a variety of subjects. Most recently, I spent some time and money rebuilding the seals and ball on the guest head and replacing the duck bills. Not really my favorite thing to do especially since this is a new to us boat. I requested of my wife to inform our female guests that toilet paper should be disposed of in the waste pail and not in the toilet. After the first weekend with guests onboard, the vacuflush was pumping like crazy and tripping the circuit breaker. I researched the Forum and found that others had problems after guests spent some time onboard. One suggestion was to fill the bowl with water and then flush it. I did this several times but still had the same problem. I came back to the boat several days later and filled the bowl again and flushed it. This cleared the jam. Apparently the toilet paper had deteriorated enough so the force of the water pushed it thru to the holding tank.

Anyone have a foolproof method of preventing guests from flushing copious amounts of paper? I have also noticed other behavior from my non-boater guests that has left me scratching my head in wonderment. Two couples on a Saturday and two different couples on a Sunday. Both days someone put their feet up on the outdoor table, knowing full well that as soon as we dropped anchor that we were going to eat on that table. They wouldn't do that at home.

One other interesting phenomena: My slip is extremely tight and there are boats parallel docked on the other side of the Cove where the Marina is. Challenging is an accurate description when the wind is calm. Anyway, I always tell guests to be seated during docking maneuvers so I can have unobstructed visibility when backing into the slip. As soon as I start the backing in maneuver, at least one guest feels an obligation to stand up to "give me guidance." I try to be as diplomatic as possible but it get frustrating. Anyone else have problems with guests that want to help but cause problems. I do mention that I appreciate their exuberance in wanting ro help but the best way to help is to stay out of the way, stay seated, and let my wife and I handle everything as a team.

So...

I have a safety briefing at the beginning of my cruises where I deal with most of this.

I talk about life jackets. Mob procedures and sitting while I am leaving and entering the birth. Then I openly discuss toilet usage and my 3 squares per wipe rule which amounts to don’t tear off more then 3 squares at a time. You can use as many 3 square pieces as you need but don’t tear off more then that. (We use Scott’s rv) and ive not once had a clog.

Having this meeting allows me to gently remind folks as we arrive back at the birth about the safety meeting and to please take a seat.

I simply tell people no pooping and sit down and shut up while maneuvering. It seems to work well and limits the numbers of guests we have to entertain.
