420 DA Thread

Does anyone here have a Bluetooth wireless connection on their clarion cmd5 head unit? I would like to wirelessly play the music on my IPod through the boat sounsystem. What hardware do I need and how to make it happen? Thanks.

I have the exact same question for the XMD3. Anxiously awaiting great solutions!

Has anyone added a factory sound shield to their generator? There's a support that looks to be in the way but I really want to add one.

Its not noisy but could be quieter. I have been running it a lot more and listening to a friends boat who has a sound shield his seems much quieter. He does have a different searay.

There's a lot more to the project of making a genny quieter. First of all you need to understand what makes the noise. For example, my 9KW Onan is not too noisy, but the exhaust was very noisy. The sound shield will make the genny slightly quieter, but you will still have the exhaust noise. So, the noise issue will remain. So, before investing your money in to a sound shield, make sure you know what makes most noise.

In my case I went with upgraded muffler and I'd say that my noise went down by at least 30%. The muffler SR installs (at least on 420DB) is a joke, it's so small that it barely helps with noise reduction.

I personally not a big fan of sound shields, b/c it blocks the monitoring ability. Anytime I open the day hatch, a quick glans at the genny gives me good pic of it's condition without even touching anything. If it's covered from all sides, now you have to take at least the front cover off just to look at it. Of course it's not a big deal, but percentage wise I'd say that the monitoring would drop drastically. For example, one would take the cover off weekly (I doubt you would do it daily), but in my case I see my genny several times a day. I have custom storage in the ER, so I go in there often enough for various reasons.

Do you have the part number or manufacturers name of the dual stage muffler you used? My generator has the original Centek muffler and it seems loud to me.

Finally moved on my custom sunshade. I installed a pad eye on the inside of the hardtop and will use 2 poles in the rod holders. Canvas guy is working on shade and should have it by the weekend.

Here you go. It works great and I can still close all my canvas with it in place. I'm really happy with it.

So I had an opportunity to look in the engine room of a 44 dancer at a local marine max. The turbochargers had a "jacket" on them which appeared to be some sort of insulator. Does anyone know what those are?

Hello 420 owners,
I just spent a few minutes reading the thread posts, since I am considering a 2003 as our next boat. If you would be so kind to help me along with my decision I would appreciate it.
1- What are your thoughts on the Onan Genny?
2- Do you "need" bow thrusters. The one I am looking at doesn't have them. I am ok with that, but your thoughts?
3- What is the "sweet spot" for fuel efficiency
4- What is high engine hours for the Cummins?

It's always 'nice to have' thrusters but with Diesels you certainly don't 'need' them. They're very responsive to shift changes. With Gassers, like mine, I rarely use my thruster and could easily live without but I'm glad it's there.

One more thing. If you can swing moving up one more year and get the hardtop it'll pay off BIG in terms of comfort and resale value. Even if it meant giving up thrusters.

Great advise... Thanks!

There is a 2004 available, but it has 1200 hours. What do you think about that?

I'm assuming it has diesels so I'm not qualified to answer that.

Other more experienced members will chime in I'm sure. They'll want to know about the service history and make and model of the motors so you might as well get that posted on this thread now.

I don't have an answer for that since I have my hand on three 420 DA's at this time. They range from 400-1200hrs. The 2004 has 1200hrs. I just want a general consensus on hours. To me, 1200hrs is still a young Diesel engine. You are right that a bad history would make 1200 hrs bad, but normal treatment puts it in the acceptable range. I just want thoughts from those who own them.

And, yes we are talking about Cummins 6CTA's
