420 DA Thread

Frank, In addition, on the B's at least, after the engine rpms are above approx. 1200, the intake heaters will shut off regardless of engine temps. We disconnect them. The current load with both elements working is over 100 amps. The alternators don't like this very much.

Ok so here's a question. When I engage my start button one click do I need to wait before cranking? Been given several different answers. I ususually wait about 10-15 seconds once the beeping starts before I crank them over.

Im adding a Tracvision M3 satellite to my boat and see some owners relocated their top running/anchor light to forward of the radar. I can't see it causing any real interference and thinking of mounting my dome just in front of the light where it sits. Other than you will see the bolts under the hard top which ill use nice caps on is there a good reason to move the light?

Wait and allow the first cycle of the grid heater to complete and fire up the engine only when the voltage goes back to 13+. This usually takes more like 20-30 seconds. The time is not important. The "green light" to fire up is when the voltage returns to the high mark on the gauge (about 12-13v).

Well satellite was installed prior to covering and just about done with all the inside work. Installed 3 receivers. 12 volt to my 12 volt stateroom TV and AC to the other 2 TVs. Having an issue with one IR extender but think its a bad module. Spring project will be underwater lights and I see Ocean Led has a new line out.

Ok, perhaps Alex or someone else can answer my question. On my new 44 DA when I engage my start button(s) (one click on the rocker) I don't get any beeping, chime, buzzer at all. Is this normal? Engines start no problem, but I'm used to hearing something from my previous 340 DA and other boats I've owned.

No beeping etc when engaged one click. After engaged one click, wait for voltage to pop back up to 12+ volts (say 20-30 seconds) which indicates heaters have cycled off, then start. As easy as that! No annoying noises!

Here's a question? Is the bottom paint around my side exhaust factory? I see it on most 420s but thinking of using a bootstripe paint to as least dress it up.

As some of you know I've just purchased a 44 Sundancer and I'm going to be leaving it in the water down in Kent Island, MD this winter. My first diesel boat and lots to learn. I spent a bunch of time last week at FLL boat show talking to all the vendors of the products in my boat including Searay, Cummins, KVH, Dometic, Glendinning, Racor and Quickline Anchors. I'm planning on winterizing my systems with SeaFlush. Have any of the 420 and 44 owners used the Seaflush system to winterize? What have been your experiences?

I just went through 18 gallons -50, two gallons of -100, and 3 gallons of super concentrate. One gallon of super concentrate went into my fresh water. The other two made 6 more gallons of -50. So, that's 29 gallons (6 of those were made with 2 gallons of super concentrate, so really 25 bought) if you are keeping track. With all that, I put 6 gallons into each main, 5 gallons through the fresh water systems, 4 gallons through the toilets, 3 gallons through the generator, 1 gallon in the water tank, 3.5 gallons through the AC (about a pint in my face and 1/2 gallon in the bilge - See Sea Flush string).

Engines: one gallon -50 into the strainer, 1 gallon each of -100 and -50, 1 gallon super concentrate, 2 gallons water through the mains
Water tank: one gallon super concentrate into an "empty tank"
AC and Fresh water systems: -50
Toilets: flush 2 gallons -50 into the "empty holding tank and ~another gallon in each toilet (4 gallons). I poured about a pint into each sink to fill the catches.

I used roughly 48 gallons for my 420DA, maybe it's an over kill but for what the antifreeze cost and for what it protects, why not.

Approximately how many gallons of pink antifreeze do you think I should buy to cover both engines, plumbing, AC and Genset?

Winterize List - same every year
26 gallons pink (-50) - assuming water heater is bi-passed
2 humidity bags
2 fuel biocide
13 gallons Shell Rotella T 15-40
2 LF 9009 oil filters
1 LF 3536 oil filter
1 case Sam Adams Octoberfest

Quick questions:
- what you mean by "2 fuel biocide"? Usually you need very small amount.
- "2 humidity bags". Are you referring to 2"no damp" buckets or Starbright bags with a hanger?

Alex,
The "2" is a typo error - this should be biocide, amount of course depends upon size of tank to be treated
For humidity, I use the Starbright refill bags and re-use the canisters each year, but have also used the hanging bags and have no opinion on what would be better as both seem to work.

jrivine1 I thought each engine holds 5 gallons of oil (10 total). So why 13 gallons on your list?

About 5 1/2-6 gal for each engine, plus 1 gal for genny. That's how I end up with the same 13 gal.

What about the fuel filter FF5488? Shouldn't that also get changed on each engine? Also, why only 1 LF3536 on your list instead of 2?
