420 DA Thread

Also, we had some kids on the boat and the clogged the toilet. Wouldn’t hold pressure and occasionally wouldn’t flush and running 5 or 6 pots of hot water cleared it up. Easiest boat fix I’ve had in a while.

First season, 3 pump outs. We seem to filling the waste tank without using its that often. I know it's full today since it bubbled up. Originally thought it might be the sensor was off, indicating the tank was full when it's not. I was wrong. Now wondering if clean water could be slowly filling the tank, outside of any flushing. Bowls seem to both hold water without leak down. Pump hasn't been coming on to suggest there a leak. At least not that I've noticed. Is there some passive way the tank could fill when not in frequent use?

I went from a single Raymarine E120 to dual Garmin GPSMAP1242+. Not exactly plug and play, but not too difficult. Had to replace the radar and run the new cables. Also ran NMEA2000 and Ethernet to the engine room for the DST800 transducer and GC200 camera. The rest of the wiring was all behind the dash.

Also added the Mercury NMEA2000 gateway to bridge the Smartcraft data. That part was plug and play and works very well. Get all of the engine data (except the generator) from the Diesel View to the new Garmin displays.

Very happy with the system so far. Got a few more things to add (GT51 transducer at haul out, GXM53 XM/Sirius Module, etc.)

Let me know if you have any questions...
Depending what you want out of the GXM53, be aware it doesn't provide all that it's cracked up to be. The big shortcoming is no SiriusXM radio station accompanying data and graphics for a Fusion radio even though both products are Garmin. Also the Sirius weather data is great but expensive. Using the GXM53 the Fusion radio needs to be fed audio from RCA cables from the GXM53 so the Fusion gets no data, just audio to the Aux input. The GXM53 therefore needs to be tuned using your MFD. There is a thread on the difficulties integrating SiriusXM that several of us went through in the electronics area FYI. So, if you are desiring to achieve a data feed and audio to a Fusion entertainment system and full Fusion control from the MFD you are best off getting a $19 SXM tuner and Shakespeare marine antenna and connect to the back of the Fusion head.

Schematically speaking that’s damn near impossible for your water tank to drai. there. Is your pump out location is somehow allowing water in. Does your sink or shower sump drain there?
Fill the toilet and make a mark with a marker on the bowl. Come back a day or two later and see where the mark is. Chances are it’s not holding pressure or at the very least your pump our pressure location isn’t sucking all the the stuff out.

Hi Tom,

Agree with everything here. If you want both weather on the Garmin and audio on the Fusion, best to buy the GXM53, Sirius Tuner, and SRA50 Antenna. If nothing else, so that you don’t have to fire up your Nav System to listen to Sat Radio at the dock...

Obviously all of the of the weather data that the GXM53 provides is available from various sources on the internet. As long as you’re boating in areas with cell service, not much need. The GXM53 give you the availability to get that data offshore, though. We’re probably not offshore enough to justify the cost. It sure is cool, though! And there is a value in seeing it on your chart (with your route programmed) as opposed to on your phone/tablet...

Vacuflush update... Tried the hot water, no change. Picked up the duckbills and decided to dig in. I can get to and change the two on the output side relatively easy. The input side, not so much. How do you guys get in there? I’m 6’3 and 210 Lbs. and tried like hell...

I then tried to remove the pump assembly from the tank. Can get the four bolts out and unplug the connector fine. Can’t even see the nut on the hose clamp that attaches the pump to the tank on that side. Figured if I was able to get it off by feel, there’s no way I could’ve got it back on.

So with the two new duckbill valves on the output side, I still have the same issue (pump runs for about 5 seconds every hour or so). Guess I need to go find a left-handed midget (er, short person), unless someone can shed some light...

Thanks!

I basically lay across the engines on my 40 and go to town. Its not easy. I also keep puppy pads close by incase there's any extra. Sorry the hot water didn't work.

Plan B, pay someone.

Speaking of plumbing, it's haul out time in Toronto. Pulled the intake pipe from the coolant pump to the a/c units. Turned each one on separately. All three times (fwrd berth, salon and cockpit) the pump came on and suck the pink from the bucket.

Here's the concern. The only sign of pink being discharged was the forward hull thru fitting that in my Manual says is for the frwd berth. Same diagram says the salon fitting is midship port side. Nothing came out there, again only the forward berth fitting. Same for cock pit. I was positive the cockpit discharged water from the a/c at the rear of starboard. Nothing in the diagram to confirm that.

My worry is the pink did not circulate thru the slaon and cockpit condenser, even though logic says it did, albiet exiting the the frwd berth fitting. Would hate to have to replace 2 a/c units past the long Canadian winter freeze.

Any advice for a newbie is greatly appreciated.

PS. After the struggle with the genset and a/c with pink slopping around the bilge, I just ordered a Sea. Flush kit to say my sanity for winterizing the engines when up on the hard. Hope it live up to its billing.

Does anyone have the Urethane spoke cover for a steering wheel, or a complete steering wheel in excellent condition for a 2006 44DA you want to sell? My spoke cover is falling apart.
Thanks!

First, Sea Flush is your friend.....good purchase.

My first year winterizing, only 2 units, I used the Sea Flush to introduce Pink to the AC pump. I would only get Pink to discharge out of the Salon AC unit amidship. The forward AC unit would never spit out Pink. After trying to push about 10 gallons through, I raised the white flag and had the marina do it at $125....EACH! The next year, I rigged a bilge pump, a piece of garden hose, and now I PUMP Pink from a 5 gallon bucket and push it through the port side hull discharges...one at a time, and let the Pink spill into the Bilge through the open strainer (closed Sea cock).

These AC pumps are very low head pumps, not a lot of pressure. They usually have about 2' of head pressure on them from the boat sitting in the water. Because the delta pressure is not that big, the pink is looking for the path of least resistance, which may explain why you see no discharge from the other ports. You may want to consider backwashing the lines with fresh water to remove any build up. Wouldn't hurt.

Shall do. Read somewhere that they did the reverse rocess of a garden hose in the fittings followed by pumping in the pink using a drill pump. Thought I'd try the usual route. But, since that didn't work, when she's up on the hard this week, I'll give it a shot. I'll do the same with the sea cock closed and let the bilge pumps winterize themselves by pumping out the pink that floods out from the strainer.

Tremendous help. You've lively save me two condensers. Will report back.

Anyone tried to source the “trapezoidial” hatch in the v-berth above the bed? The arms on ours had been removed by the previous owner. I probably need to pull the hatch and re-bed it this fall, so I’m thinking of just ordering the whole new assembly. Seems tricky to find that shape anywhere on the internet...

My '05 parts manual indicates they are Taylor Made, I'd give them a call.

2020 Boating Season is in the Books!

Average Consupmtion: 17.55 gph
$3,069 in transient Slip fees
$8,344 in upgrades
2,053 travel miles
Gross Fuel economy: 0.91 mpg

Getting hauled out for the winter for the first time since I've had the boat. When can I start waxing?

Thanks to all for your help, advice, and most of all comradery during this anythign but normal year.

Jaybeaux, out.

Hi all went into engine room today. I raised the engine hatch all normal going up. When i began to lower the hatch. I heard an unusual loud grinding noise as the hatch went down. Anyone ever had this happen. Thanks

No more like groining noise. Going up no noise at all. Sounds like the pistons are binding up. I going to grease the motors and spray lubricant on the pistons. If no improvement I will have to replace the actuators. Thanks

I have a 2004 420 DA. Does anyone have theirs shrink wrapped and if so, how do you access the bilge? Seems like if its wrapped i might not be able to open the deck. Thanks
