420 DA Thread

So interesting - as this just happened to me last night!! Neither of my TVs work, the master berth or the salon drop down along with the DVD player. The GFI plug in the galley cabinet behind the stove is good! I was told there is a GFI outlet in the guest Head below the sink - which I have never seen - so hoping it is there, hahaha!! The other one in the master head inside the center mirrored cabinet is also good! Go figure???

I really don't know much about how the horns work on the boat. I recently noticed my horns are not working. Can anybody give me some suggestions on where to start trouble shooting this? Perhaps someone can tell me how the system works and how it is configured? Besides wanting it fixed I am interested to learn how it works.
Thanks,
Bob

On my boat your horn switch is wired to an air pump. The pump is behind the TV in the forward state room...from the pump there is a clear hose running to the horn...if you have power to the pump and air coming out of the pump then your horn is left. Here is a pic of the pump …you can see two wires from the switch and the plastic tube to the horn itself.
You might want to take the air tube off the horn to see if getting air before taking the tv storage apart…access from chain locker

Have someone push the horn button on the helm and listen for the pump to engage - if you hear it running then it is probably spiders or some other insect in the horn diaphragm or a clog in the tubing as mentioned earlier! Exactly what happened to mine - spider nest in the horn itself!

The little air pump behind the TV in the pic that Blueone shared is very sensitive to needing lubricant. Remove the air hose and a drop or two of multipurpose light weight oil every 4-5 months is needed. I have just replaced my air pump and still no noise except for a whine from the horn area. Turn your boat bow toward the dock and you can stand on the dock and bend down inside the starboard anchor locker and gain access to the horns...remove the air hose, push the button, and if you get air, remove the horns and clean the diaphragms.....I have this to do as well.

I am having some problems with my Lofrans Progress 1 windlass and I am considering replacing it with a Process 1. How difficult is this installation? Do you re-use the deck switches and dashboard controls or do they have to be replaced also? Any advice from anyone who has done this would be appreciated.

What is your "problem" that you are experiencing? Is the unit not operating (electrically) or is it something else?

My windlass operates but the finger and the tension spring are worn out and the windlass gets jammed up on the chain sometimes and it slips on the rope. I called Imtra and they said the finger kit is no longer avaialbe.

I bought the kit that @techmitch referenced. The guy is super easy to work with. However, the one for my windlass was not exactly the correct size. If I remember correctly, his are 8 mm and mine is 9 mm....or something like that. However, removing the old finger and reinstalling it, I was able to tighten it up a bit and keep the end from sagging down. The chain would bind up on top of the finger. I used to hold the finger "open" while retrieving the anchor rode. Anyway, as I say, after reinstalling the original finger, I tightened up the locking nut to prevent the sagging and the windlass operated properly.

I have a question, I have searched to no avail. Does the salon sofa bottom slide out to make a bed? Mine seems like it wants to move but is hung up in the center. Is there a lever to pull? Etc. thanks

It slides straight out without a lever or anything to be pulled.

Does anyone use a cockpit cover for their 44/420? I noticed I have one but have used the isinglass when I left the boat this whole summer. I would like to use the cockpit cover instead when leaving the boat this winter so my isinglass stays in good shape. My concern is I heard they can trap moister. My seats are as good as new and don’t want to compromise that. What are the pros/cons of using the cockpit cover and has anyone noticed any moister or dirt that has made its way through when using one? I do keep the boat in a covered slip…

I don’t use a cockpit cover but I seriously doubt it would be an issue for you. It’s a boat. Those seats can certainly take moisture if any should accumulate.

I use a super absorber to wipe down the whole cockpit of dew and/or rain and my seats remain gleaming white. Don’t forget about keeping the vinyl surfaces conditioned with 303.

I had a brand new cockpit cover made for my boat in April. It has two vents sewn into it. It keeps the cockpit just as clean as you leave it when covered and never a hint of moisture/mildew. I am also in a covered slip and it keeps the upholstery looking new. I take if off in the fall when the temps cool and reinstall the camper canvas and then reverse the process after the pollen in the spring.
