420/44 DB Owners Club

Hi Alex: Today I experienced a problem on line 1 of my AC electrical system. I was at anchor on battery and started the genset to prepare for my return trip back tp my slip. I noticed that the voltage on line i was 62 volts and line 2 read normally at 120vac. No items on the line 1 line could be powered. After I got situated back in my slip I plugged in shore power and line 1 functioned normally at 120 VAC. I cycled all CB's and solenoids in the salon, transom hatch back and in the covered box in the bilge without any change. It is interesting that I am getting one-half the voltage output from the genset only on line 1 and no issue when on shore power. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

Hey John,

I assume your question was addressed to me. Based on how I understand your symptoms, the issue with line 1 is only when using the generator. If that's the case, the first thing I'd do is to check voltage produced by the generator at the main breaker. I'm referring to the breaker located on the top left (STBD side), when looking at the generator facing at the stern of the boat. As I recall, you need to remove 4 #10 bolts that hold the metal cover. Then, remove clear plastic cover to get the the breaker contacts.

Check the voltage going to the breaker and coming out of the breaker.

While you're at it, check the Hertz. You should see steady 60Hz.

Today was sea trial and marine survey with haul out for bottom paint next week. We will get full reports on Monday but no big surprises requiring allowance negotiation. I’m expecting buyer acceptance at the first of the week and then it will really sink in that we are selling our beloved 44. It’s been a great boat and I’ve appreciated so much the vast array of knowledge that I’ve been able to tap into here at CSR to keep her in great condition. Soon the next boat will present itself and we will continue to enjoy the yachting life style.

Hi Carpediem,

My name is Mark and I have the same boat as yours. Life's Good. I was on boat trader and I think I saw your boat for sale there.... I noticed the dingy lift and was wondering if you could share the manufacturer name and the approx cost. What are the pros and cons? I like that you can walk behind it and take it off the boat... any other thoughts?

Hi All! Its been a few years since I posted here. We moved up from a 2001 410 to our lovely 2007 440! I think I read all 116 pages here and can relate to nearly every story. Great stuff! My question after looking all over the internet is where can I find the black gills on either side of the boat. The previous owner took them off and I want the signature look back! Any guidance would be great. And yes I looked on flounder pounder.

Thanks
Mark

Hey Mark, I think I may have a spare set that I can send you. I was going to remove mine as they were scratched up a bit. I have access to the patterns to either digitize or just cut some out for you. I took off the two stripes on the bridge and was going to put the gills back on in the Blue color of my hull but ended up selling before I got to it. I gave the black gills to another 420 buddy but I don't think he ever used them.

Rusty,
That would be awesome!!! You have my contact info, just let me know what I owe you!
Cheers!

Just curious. Have any of you added a second fixed VHF to the helm? If so, where did you install it?

I still have the unused cursor controls at the left from the old SRNavigator. Perhaps that new small GX1400 Standard Horizon box would fit there. Will be a while before I get back to the helm with the template.

I can't find good pictures (posting what I have just to give you an idea). I have one just to the left of the port MFD and the other just under the fire suspension monitor, to the right of the center MFD. I also removed old clarion remote, since I upgraded my audio system. Both of my units are Ray230s, so the handsets are relatively small and fit perfectly in those locations.

Radar install question!
After purchasing the boat three years ago I added a Garmin 7612 chart plotter in the left dash panel, and left the Searay navigator in the center as it still worked & worked with radar. Now it has crapped out on me, I intend to install a 24” Garmin radar dome. I am questioning if I can mount right to the arch or will I need a pedestal. If so how tall & what if any degree of forward? tilt?. Has anyone gone this route & have any insight?

I had a Raymarine dome that was mounted right on the arch and it worked fine. I liked the low bridge clearance.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a Ray240 on the right so maybe the cleanest install is another black box VHF

Considering the fact that when on plane your bow is raised high and the radar arch angle will be much different than when cruising at displacement speed, for this reason you need to use shims.

Refer to this guide (Mounting Consideration section):
https://static.garmin.com/pumac/GMR_18_24_xHD_Install_EN-US.pdf

Special shims are easily available.

If you don't use shims, you'll be losing very close range targets when on plane.

I had a Garmin Fantom dome installed a couple of years ago. The installer gave it maximum downward tilt to try and level it on plane. I think this was a mistake and hope to change it over the winter. I found myself in a zero-zero visibility situation on the Potomac River a month or so ago and was reliant on radar alone for about four hours. I was only mostly going at a few knots, sometimes just bare steerageway. With the radar tilt I was missing targets dead ahead. The way I now think about it, I am only going on plane if I have good visibility. But, in low viz I really want the radar to see as much as possible, particularly at close range. I am going to try to reduce the tilt a little to see if there is a happy medium but would be very careful about applying the full tilt for on plane.

It's all about finding a balance on having the most effective angle. I 100% agree that logically, very close range would be used in low viz at slow speed. Basic scenarios like cruising in the dark or in a fog as most common and we can assume that most people would cruise at slow speed in those conditions. However, I've seen many times people cruise on plane in the dark and in the fog.

At the end of the day, it's probably up to individual captain to determine their comfort zone when it comes to finding the angle balance. But, one thing I know that if you have no shims at all, you'll be missing targets you don't want to miss, unless you're religiously plan on doing only slow cruising in poor viz.

Typically the scanner should be set up with a downward tilt at 0 speed for a planing hull. The downward angle is based upon the boat's change in angle (attitude) at cruise speed. My boat has a cruise speed angle change of about 6 degrees so I set up the Garmin Phantom 6 degrees down at rest. The radar has a gain (scanning angle) of 12.5 degrees above the plane of rotation and 12.5 degrees below. Pay no attention to the roof/radar arch mounting pad angle; it's simply a starting point to set up the radar. Consider the two graphics both showing a boat at 0 speed and at cruise speed below; the first showing scanner rotation plane level to the water at 0 speed and second level to the water at cruise. The second graphic is the desired configuration.

Thanks for all the replies. We will catch up to the radar at a marina this weekend. Will install on the arch with a slight shim, I agree our main use is slow moving in fog. Can always redo the install when we get the boat home next summer.

We are replacing our VHF as the cord on the 230 has pretty much disintegrated and going thru the same thinking you are about where to mount. I've pretty much decided on the new Standard Horizon GX2400 - mainly for the N2K connectivity and AIS receiver ... more reasonably priced than the Garmin or Raymarine black box versions. I'm thinking of installing under the autopilot for two reasons - the Navigator cursor is disconnected so could use that space, and easy radio access. I'm right handed and would prefer on my right but I think this a good spot. Here are a couple pics of two Standard Horizon models in that location - I've verified there is the depth under the dash for the radio's to fit. The GX2400 is pretty slim.

This won't happen for me until the spring so if you do mount one there, pls post a picture.

I like the way you think. Personally, I think the GX2400 is the best overall VHF choice for most of us. Built in GPS and AIS receiver. If you run in an area where you really need an AIS transceiver, then you'd need to add that. I have the Smartcraft monitor next to the autopilot, so I don't think it will fit. Looks like the GX1400 might. I'll attach some helm images. I still have the

Ray 240 to the right. I was looking a add a second VHF but think it would be wise to include at least AIS receive. Hard to beat the Standard Horizon price and functions.

If you call Raymarine--they will put a new cord on the VHF for about $70--I had them do it two years ago--PERFECT

I did call (last year) and there was no stock anywhere left. I was left with the impression they were not planning on getting more. I want to update the electronics, the radio is part of that journey.
