420/44 DB Owners Club

I agreed to help the new owner of Carpe Diem do the annual fluid and filter changes on the engines and the Genny. I don't have access to the manuals any more. I forgot to buy the Racor filter elements. Do any of you 44DB owners know which element I need? As I remember it looked like both engines and the genny had the same filter assembly installed.
Thanks for the help.

I'm using 30 micron element 500MA, 2010 PM-OR

New topic: I need to replace my sliding screen door. Has there been any discussion on the best way of doing that? I've studied the problem, but aside from unscrewing everything I see I'm not sure how to approach it. Has anyone done that before? Thx

As far as I know you do need to remove the entire door frame to replace the screen door.. The only other way I considered doing it was to bend or cut the original door out and replace the door with one that has an adjustable top rail to accommodate reinstallation. One of those "what were they thinking?" designs on these boats.

Grrr...thanks. I'll tackle it over the winter and post any good advice.

I'm having a survey and sea trial done on a 2007 Sea Ray 44' SD which I'm buying. I'd welcome any advice on what problems to look for. Thanks

Same issue. I want to replace mine but have been shopping around for one of those retractable options. Don't currently use the screen door that often so its way way down on the list. Curious as to what others have done.

I have an 04 which I bought 10 years ago and is mostly the same boat, minus the QSC's. Every boat has its issues and I'm sure the surveyor will find things wrong. A complete maintenance schedule would be a good sign along with annual oil analysis reports. I've replaced things from the A/C's, isinglass, check values, bilge pumps, coolant/hoses, electronics, batteries, fridge, carpet, etc., etc., which I consider normal wear and tear and general maintenance on a large boat. She has 1000 hrs on her twin 480's and I've had no major issues with the hull and general design/build of the boat, but a couple of things that need to be watched:
  • The powertrain setup on that boat is excellent, but aftercooler maintenance is critical on those motors. find out the last time they were rebuilt.
  • I've seen some threads on water seepage into the bilge. No damage seemed to occur or leaks into the living area, but leaks none-the-same.
  • There are frequently severe spider cracks at the bow behind the windlass. I also have them, but haven't caused a problem so far.
  • Boat may induce frequent desires to take long trips and to empty your wallet. :)
  • Enjoy...

Thanks so much. Your ending bullet point made me laugh out loud. LOL. Yes the wife now retired wants to due just that. Our old 36' power cat only did 9mph. Soooo tired of that. The engines have just under 1200 hours. We have a copy of the 1000 hour maintenance report. Both after coolers were replaced. I'll have to check for the spider cracks Monday during the surgery. Stay tuned.

Slightly off topic but but may be relevant. I haven't seen this discussed on here so i'll ask a fellow 04 model owner. Not sure if the new models were subject to this. Recently found out why my new to me boat came with a new gen that had only 20 hours on it. Apparently some 42/44 DB left the factory without a check valve on the exhaust line of the gen. This causes water to back up into the cylinders of the gen when underway and gen is not running. Is this news to anyone? Something worth looking for at survey? I noticed the check valve on mine but initially thought it some sort of muffler. Now the new gen makes sense. Ran into a CSR member over the summer who had this happen to him as he was the original owner of his DB.

yeah, I cruise (2250rpm) at 22-24 knots and burn 32-34 gal/hr and 32 knots at WOT. My motors are a gen earlier than yours, so you may get better perf.

Never had that issue and I do have the inline check value. Always thought it was a muffler too. :)

Make sure the Seawater side of the cooling systems IE, heat exchangers and aftercoolers have been serviced if not regularly, at least recently by a reputable mechanic or shop. It is about a $6000 job give or take. Good luck with the survey and enjoy your new boat and welcome to the CSR Family.

I pulled my screen door by removing the glass door first. With both glass doors removed you can get the screen to come out through the interior. Tight fit but can be done.

I've heard that removing the fixed and sliding glass is not easy - did you have any problems? any tips? Repair to my screen door is on the list of things to do so I'm following this with interest.
