Engine start update. When I start the new port engine with the throttle advanced one quarter of the way it immediately starts without any hesitation. This makes me think it gets a lack of fuel. Perhaps the throttle cable needs replacement?

Ok next issue. My westerbeke gets no water flow. Sea strainer clean and has good flow. Gene mechanic showed me the location of the raw water pump and impeller. It's located aft of the generator and in front of the fresh water tank. They say they must remove generator to access water pump. How could this possibly be the design? Any tips.

Shayne,

I can't tell you if removing the generator saves time or not. I can tell you I changed the impeller myself this last week and was able to do it by reaching around from both sides.

It takes patience and the correct tools. I believe it was a 9/32 inch bolt head. A wrench would work well/best. I had a small thumb socket that I used because I didn't have the wrench.

To make it easier, I would suggest removing the hoses at the plastic breather apparatus at the top port side of the generator to allow you to move and them out of the way to easier access the impeller cover.

Also, if your impeller vanes are gone, you will need to dig them out of the heat exchanger. This is also very easy to do. You will need to remove the end cap on the water tank side of the generator. Also, a spotting mirror on an extension pole makes this job very easy. I used a pair of curved needle nosed pliers to gently scrape out the impeller parts.

Frank Webster suggests replacing the rubber seal on the heat exchanger as part of the process. I did not do that since I did not have one handy, but it is on order. So you may want to have that available when you dive in.

I did this one evening after work in about 2 hours, being the first time and all. It should be quicker next go-around.

Hope this helps if you decide to go at it yourself.

When I did my impellor, I unbolted the genny and slid it forward. This made it much easier. It doesn't need to move far. Nothing was put in this boat with repairs in mind. I did my head filter today. Had to remove my Racors and the 6" exhaust hose. It was a pain in the ass. I moved the filter to the front of the tank.

Yes, congrats. I'm new to this boat too. I just picked up the same boat, same year, same engines in October. We can learn together!

Congratulations! We're in the same boat, so to speak!

Certainly no expert compared to others on this forum, but happy to share our refit experience over the last two years.

Enjoy!

Looking for zinc recommendations  I am in brackish water was told aluminum is the way to go

Yup. Zinc for salt, Aluminum for brackish, Magnesium for fresh (at least that's what I've always been told and have done).

Curious about which Racor filters I need. Size, style, micron, etc. I have the 2 filters for each engine.

I'm not sure if Sea Ray used the same filters and set up for all 400DBs or if they changed it through the years and various engines (CATs, Cummins, etc.).

I don't have any spares on hand, and I want to get some, but don't know what to get, or where to get them from . Any advice is appreciated.

I have purchased filters by the case from both marine filters.com and green marine.com. Both are good vendors with low prices.

THe SR parts list says you have single Racor 500MA filters. If you have dual 500MA or larger filters, then someone has changed them. Since it appears that you may have a non standard set up, you should check the filter canisters on your boat for labeling and then order your filters for the canister size you have.

In any case, you should be using 30 micron Racors, provided you are using high efficiency Caterpillar brand filters on the engines.

Replaced the microwave with a Panasonic NN-SN651B model. Fit tightly in the original space. Had to cut the bottom trim piece by about a 1/4 inch.
