40 sedan bridge forum

As of this morning, we have officially joined The Club. We closed on a 2001 400 Sedan Bridge with Cummins 6CTA 8.3M diesels, not our first boat, but our first Sea Ray and our first diesel boat. The boat is in Lake Erie and due to our work schedules, we are taking delivery in Holland, MI next Friday and will bring her back to Chicago on Labor Day weekend. I will try to post pictures soon.

Here are a couple of shots taken during the survey. I will update with new pictures next weekend.

Thanks Bill. The PO installed new canvas connected to the arch.

I will get some pictures of that since you are considering to do that too. Not sure that it won't be a PIA to open the back window (may have to walk on the cushions to open it) but it really opens up the back seating on the bridge.

First of many questions...what are you storing in the storage under the galley floor?

It's a great space for tools and spares, but what is everyone else storing in there?

Here are some pics I took yesterday of the new canvas we just had made. It replaces what was there before with the exception of clear vinyl all the way down in on the aft section of the bridge, and all the way to the bikini top from the radar arch. The center sections above and below the radar arch roll up or can be easily removed.

The last pic is how the canvas was configured previously. Some of you may recall we had painted the teal canvas black. It worked perfectly to get us to a point of replacing the canvas.

Truk,

We keep the hose for the in house vac, a small second upright vacuum, and an army cot.

We have hardwood installed, and I prefer not to be in and out of the hatch to minimize the opportunity for gauging the wood on the floor when handling the hatch. So I keep more occasionally than frequently accessed items in there.

Truk, just let the storage evolve based on your needs and use. I've moved stuff around to optimize over the year I've owned the boat. You have storage under both stateroom floors, under the mid stateroom beds, under the galley and hall floors and under the starboard sofa. Lots of options.

Hi - I want one of these boats with diesels. We recently sold a 380DA Dancer after our attempt to move it to the PNW failed. Since we still hadn't sold our 280DA, we trailered it from Galveston to Tacoma ourselves. It was a 4-day adrenalin rush and I won't do it again. We met a nice family at Sucia Island in the San Juans who invited us aboard their 2001 400 SD and this sealed the deal on selling the 380DA. Anyone with knowledge of an exceptional diesel powered 2001 - 2004 400SD for sale is welcome to PM me. Oh, and what is the deal on the balsa coring I need to be wary of? Was that prior to 2001? The 380DA has 3126TA Cats and I had no complaints about them, but it seems most of the 400SD's have Cummins and I was wondering how Searay decided which engine to use between models.

Roger - You'll find a lot of love for the 40 Sedan Bridge on this thread..its a great boat.

Regarding the coring, you find 2002+ are still cored (bottom), with the hull sides solid. This is considered an improvement, but IMO nothing to rule out older models.

Engine power is very important with this boat. This is a stern heavy hull, and needs a lot of power to cruise efficiently (if that is possible on a boat - LOL). The Cummins power moves it very nicely, without any need for tabs. Another option I would have chosen was the 420 HP 3126, but was basically non existent in my search radius. What I've found around my area is the 3116, or 350HP 3126 CAT prior to 2001.

2001 was the year they changed the helm layout to the 2 seat configuration as well.

Just for the record, this is a 400DB (not SD). Good luck with the search, you looking at a very desirable boat.

Thanks Paul. When you say "2002+ are still cored (bottom)", do you mean 2002 and back had cored wood bottoms but newer than 2002 are solid fiberglass hull w/o any wood? Thanks again.

The flooring looks great!!

I am planning to do the same. Are you doing the stairs going down to the galley and if so how are you planning to tackle that?

Once the carpet is removed the plastic centre part of the steps will make an uneven surface.

Milestone, I am looking at a 2001 400DB powered same as yours. What do you think about this boat with the Cats versus the Cummins?

Thanks. I do plan to do the two steps. I plan to replace the treads with the proper thickness hardwood that I will stain to the right color and hopefully remove all that crappy factory carpet stick to the stairs. Or, I may just build a full replacement from scratch. I think that may be cheaper and much less effort than struggling with that glued on carpeting.
