40 sedan bridge forum

My guess would be from the air intake box modules on each side just above your fuel fill. My rod holders have small hoses (1/4") and are to the rear of the bilge.

OK, that makes sense. I will blow some air through it and have someone outside to listen there for it. I thought I was done winterizing, but it sat outside for a couple of days in heavy rain before they moved it inside. I had to vac out the rear bilge of water because of that hose after they put her in the building last week. Thanks Bill.

Well, I completed my acceptance of a 2001 400DB with Cummins 6CTAs today. First diesel for me and first boat for me that doesn't have a lower unit sitting in the water. Advance warning I'll be stirring up this thread pretty well I expect (check the damage I did to the "300 Sundancer Questions" thread in the past two years). This is the only picture I've taken of it so far (during the haul-out to survey the bottom).

Congrats, you just bought the best boat Sea Ray has made imho. You will love everything about this boat except changing the port side impeller.

I just jumped from 30' to 40' like you. I'm bummed out that winter is arriving. She's big in the cradle, isn't she? We still have power on our dock so I will be spending a few nights on board before pulling her. I will also be looking for advice in this column.

Question: does anyone know the anchor chain size off hand? Looking to replace my bridle, but the boat is a few hundred miles away. Thanks

Bill,

Congratulations! The boat looks great!

Mike

So here is my first wave of questions. The boat surveyed great. But lots of bulbs were burned out. Here is what I have:

1) The starboard nav light is out and it seems the recessed screws may have their heads stripped. I tried a phillips and it just spins. I looked into the screwhead and looks like it might have been a phillips head that got rounded, but not sure. Maybe I just have the wrong screwdriver. Is it phillips or something else? Worst case I will drill it out and probably just buy a whole new fixture from Flounder Pounder, as the lens is cracked.

2) Trunk light is out I think. But I don't know which switch turns it on. Which one?

3) Missing a engine room light cover and the one at the forward bulkhead has a hole burned in it. I plan to replace these bulbs in the engine room with LEDs to stop the heat part and not damage the covers. Anyone know where to get replacement covers? I tried Flounder Pounder but they didn't show these. Worst case I guess I could just get new light fixtures.

4) The two bulb light over stove is missing a cover. Is there supposed to be one for it? Haven't gotten it to turn on either, so I suspect those two bulbs are burned out as well.

5) How many lights are tied to the INDIRECT switches in the salon and the stateroom hallway? Nothing comes on when I push them, but the floor light on the stairs never lights up either. Is this the light tied to that switch and is it the only light tied to that switch?

Congratulations on the new boat. You did the right choice. Its very easy to change the bulbs on the lights. I ordered some cheap china led's from amazon. I'll post some pics here once i get to change them.

Congratulations on your purchase! See below...

If you are talking about the interior of the trunk, I don't think my boat has one.

Mine also lacks a cover. Try wiggling your bulbs before replacing them. I believe my fixture is getting tired as one of the bulbs needs to be "adjusted" from time to time.

5) How many lights are tied to the INDIRECT switches in the salon and the stateroom hallway? Nothing comes on when I push them, but the floor light on the stairs never lights up either. Is this the light tied to that switch and is it the only light tied to that switch?

My Indirect switch only illuminates the light on the stairs. Check the wire connectiosn on the fixture behind the stairs. On my boat the wire connectors can occasionally get pulled apart when removing the stairs to clean the A/C filter.

Has anyone moved the two thruster batteries from between the engines to a different location? I don't like that Sea Ray put them there, I spend a lot of time stepping over them. This is on my list of to do's.
One boat we looked at had a thruster that was an after purchase install, and Florida Bow Thruster put the batteries in the same compartment as the thruster motor in the master. Anyone do this?

I am thinking about having thrusters installed on my 2003. I love to get some suggestions and comments from anyone who has experience with aftermarket products and installations. It's interesting that the batteries were installed betraan the engines. I would think the it would be better to use some of the galley floor storage compartment.

I had a Side Power Bow thruster installed 3-4 years ago and am very happy with the result. The motor was installed in the hatched compartment behind the forward stateroom bed - the charger and maintenance free batteries were installed under the bed. It surprised me to realize that the thruster was actually aft of the bed in the hull and that we actually slept forward of the thruster. I probably would have installed a stern thruster (you said thrusters) but couldn't see where there was room inside the stern to install the stern thruster motor. I think there is a thruster with a exterior mounted stern thruster motor - very expensive.
I'm and old f#@& and the thruster has made boating safer and more fun for us. I have a lower helm but never have used the thruster at this location- so don't think you need a thruster control down there....instead I'd buy the wireless remote (if offered...it was free on promotion when I purchased) and use it below - or anywhere - if you like the idea of a second location. I thin my total for 2 control at both stations and a remote was abound $12m.

Good Luck

I finally took possession of my 2001 400DB last week. Maiden voyage for us was to move it along the ICW from its previous home in Shelter Cove, Hilton Head Island to its new slip at Port Royal Landing Marina. The journey started out rocky as I couldn't get the Port engine to stay running when I started it up. After two panic calls to the broker and to a marine engine mechanic I figured out on my own that the port Racor valve had been flipped to the "All Off" position when the new generator was installed the day before. I came a little too close to another boat getting out of the slip as I was too used to the nimbleness of my 300DA with stern drives. This is more like a lumbering giant to me as a big boat newbie. After that all went well. Except when I slowed down to late for a "pop-up" no wake zone and the guy working the fuel dock there blew his air horn at me and threw his arms up in disgust. I cruised the 15 miles at about 22knts at around 2100rpm, engine temps stayed around 160, volt meters at around 13.5v and oil pressure I think was around 50. Both engines were almost exactly the same on all those gauges. I got here into my spot 180 degrees backwards from what I wanted thanks to a current that decided to park the boat for me. I plan to orient the boat the other way so the open water view is out the back of the boat. Here it is at its new home. Ignore the name and hailing port. I'll be replacing them soon.

Congrats! Nice looking boat. Are you planning on keeping her in the water over the winter? It would be nice to have that option. Let the projects begin.

Yes, I plan to use it all winter. Year round boating here - no winterizing. Regarding projects, I figure a good year to get it exactly the way I want it.
