340 SUNDANCER THREAD

The prior owner replaced all of the exhaust manifolds. that is the part that supposedly works.

I'm concerned because one of the engines was rebuilt already. the mechanic is saying that he doesn't think it was put together right, but.... How do I know it will be put together right this time. I know buying new engines solves this, but the boat is already 14 years old. i don't think new engines makes it worth any more.

If I were you, and lived where you live, I would want Yanmar Deisels. I know it is expensive, (here the conversion would cost around $80K, including a new genny). But to replace the 7.4s with 8.1s, your costs would be around half to get to a deisel boat... And a 340 with yanmars would cut your fuel costs in half, and increase the value of your boat. The 340s were offered with Yanmars, so the conversion is not new.

I looked into diesel. Your numbers are pretty accurate. I'm not sure the first mate would go for that.

How to approach the Admiral: At $80K and $6 a gallon, currently burning .7 gal/mi at cruise currently compared to 1.4 gal p/mi or better for Yanmars, it will take you about 700 hours to pay for the gas to desiel conversion... Now add in cost to repair or replace your current gas engines, and the hours to pay of the conversion can be as low as: 400 hours... Plus you will have a new Generator. The Deisel should last you for at least 2,000 hours, so you can justify the expediture... Your resale value goes up too, which is also a selling point...

Hi all! Happy First Day of Spring!

I'm looking for input/suggestions on what might be the solution for this:
Our port tachometer is being temperamental. It'll work for a bit, then stop, then come back up for a while, then stop working. It also affects the sync gauge.

Waiting for your thoughts

Thanks!

what is the experience with rebuilt diesels? i am sure that sounds like a stupid question. the engines are only as good as the person rebuilding them. generally speaking, are diesels a simpler more reliable engine?

Unscrew the instrument pannel, and rotate the knob in the back of the tach several time (it is for V6, 4 and V8 models). Put it back in the original position, then screw the panel back in... The tach should work fine after you do that...

That or you smack them a few times! :smt021

That may not work in this case - usually, when the tach is acting up, rotating the black selector switch will cure the issue, as Rod said. However, in this case, the sync gauge is acting up too, and that could be an indication that there is a bad connection between the engine tach output and the gauge cluster.

OK, we'll try the turning the knob! Tapping it sometimes works. We're hoping that the sync gauge is just an issue that the port tach's not working. They both come back when the port tach does. Fingers crossed! Thanks guys!! You are the best!

HI Everyone, I am finally taking possession of a 2004 Sundancer 340 tomorrow and can not wait!!! I am sure I will have a lot of questions on this thread and appreciate everyone's patience and help :)
one question to start with would be if anyone has had any experience on where to mount scuba tank holders on this boat? Thanks in advance!

I went down to do some work on the boat last weekend. The carpet by the aft berth was wet in the forward starboard corner of the carpet. The area that was wet was only 1 foot by 1 foot and the surrounding carpet was dry. The water appears to be coming from below the carpet because the sunbrella carpet protector was dry until I stepped on it. Any ideas what might cause this?

I just went through that very problem!!! Traced the water leak back to the starboard skylight glass. It was dripping down on the salon settee then running down the salon carpet then ending up in the aft section. I removed that cylinder trim below the skylight, ran a hose over the skylight and that did confirm my suspicion. I called my glass guy and he came out and re-caulked with the thick black stuff that he does his windshields with. Hasn't leaked since.:smt038

I'm cruising with lpvanam this weekend and he recaulked his portlight. Hopefully that does the trick.

On an 06 340 with CMD4 stereo system how do you connect your IPOD? Is there an Aux input somewhere?

Villain, you have to remove the radio to gain access to the "RCA" wires on the back of the head unit. They're going to be the red and white wires, and usually they are marked "AUX". I ran a splitter on mine to have two jacks, one inside the electrical panel and one in the cockpit.

Todd, a quick way to check it is to run a hose full blast over that window while someone is in the cabin watching for leaks.

Bruce- Thanks for the response. I was afraid that might be the answer. Seems like a simple install item the designers could have addressed in production....

It's usually not too hard to pull the radio out, just 4 screws that hold the radio in place, 2 on each side and she should slide right out.

Kreole Kid, are the LED's in the vents tied to the plastic grates or are they stuck to the hull above the vents?

Do you know how many LED's are on each side? BTW, love the look.

Dog

PS. I am assuming the strips are on the inside, right?

Dog, I sanded the back side of the vent covers then wiped clean with alcohol and I then removed the tape that they came with and reinstalled red 3m double stick tape and installed like that. I don't know exactly how many there are as this was a custom fit. Basically I had several rolls of white and blue. I laid them out, fit, then cut the strips to fit. I also did the cockpit seating area as well.

Anchor Rode Question

So, I cracked the shrink wrap off the boat over the weekend - just in time for a little spring snow! One of my many projects is to replace the anchor rode, and I'm thinking of ordering a little more chain that the original 25' - perhaps going to 40'. Any thoughts one way or the other? We typically anchor in fairly shallow water here in the Chesapeake (10' - 15', very rarely anchor in 40').

If you are in mostly shallow water then you don't need more chain.
