About the exhaust... Not to be offensive but do you know the difference between a water lift muffler and a standard exhaust?

A water lift muffler is a big canister that the exhaust is connected to, then a pipe goes through the hull at, or above the waterline. The muffler fills up with water coming from the (water cooled) exhaust system and the pressure of the exhaust gasses forces the contents out and overboard. The process continually repeating.

If the boat has a generator it will have a water lift muffler. The exhaust note is quieter and the water comes out the exhaust in spurts and dribbles (whooshes out intermittently).

The standard log style muffler is the near horizontal black pipe in your photos. Under that there is a vertical pipe that goes to the underwater exhaust fitting and a smaller pipe running from the end that goes to the above water side-exit exhausts.

Thanks testlab. I wasn't familiar, this will be my first inboard. You said if it has a genset (it does) it will be a water lift muffler, yet MasterFab said it's not a water lift.

If this is what originally was installed at the factory I guess I need to be leery of the defective exhaust design that caused a lot of water ingestion that I've read about here and elsewhere. Time for me to get educated on this.

Testlab means that, if you have a generator, the generator will have a water lift muffler, so you can see what it looks like. The generator exhaust has nothing to do with the engine exhaust, which, in your case, is NOT a water lift style. The water lift style exhaust is preferred, and a boat with log style exhaust can be converted to water lift, but there is expense involved. I hope this clears up any confusion....

I recently bought an Apple iPad and would like to buy a marine navigation app to use as a back up to the Raymarine SL70 GPS installed on our boat. Any suggestions? Also, anyone have any experience with the "Drag Queen" app offered by Active Captain?

I use it. I have cell service where I anchor. Works great...other than the fact I have to explain what "Drag Queen" is when someone sees my iPhone screen....
 
Thanks again Dale, I was being dense but the fog has lifted now. I just made an offer for a 2001 340 with the 8.1S engines and will keep the water lift exhaust factor in mind as I plan projects (assuming I'm successful in buying it). BTW, your restoration blog is great!

Here's the 8.1S in the 2001. Can anyone comment on the exhaust (is it water lift, are the risers aluminum, other comments)? I have no manual, just the photo.

Dale, Thanks for the advise on fixing my Tac... I pulled the panel off, exercised the engine indicator in the back of the gauge, and now it works fine... BTW, my wife found a supplier for the original vinyl for the seats and she made a matching insert for the space between the cockpit seats... Our new carpets should be arriving this week... We went for the Frank W, wall to wall look...
 
I asked this question in the main cruisers forum before I found this thread.

The 2002 and older 340's have a deadrise of 17 degrees. The later models have a deadrise of 21 degrees. Big difference.

I like the price point of the 2002's and the fact that the aft bench is removable so I can fish. The GoM is blessed with frequent 2-3's, not rollers. I know the 21 degree dearise on this boat can handle it easliy...how about the 17 degree?

My wife made them... She sew and does alteration, and make anything. She has made several cushions for friend's boats. She found a source for the original Sea ray vinyl from 2001, including the gold piping. She made the missing cushions (insert for the cockpit) She is thinking about redoing all the cockpit cushions, but our work is always last after paying customers...

I would recommend her, but I am biased...

If you like I can find the source for the vinyl so you can make sure it matches...
 
340 Sea Ray Sundancer Captains ... we returned from a recent trip in heavy seas (about 60 miles) and at 4000 rpm and we were burning 27 gals per hour. Does this sound reasonable to you? about 0.9 miles per gal.

Brian,

With my V-Drives and 11° thrust angle, I burn 30 GPH at 3400 RPMs, and get 23 KTs. So your BIIIs, with their "0" thrust angle, are more efficient...
 
I looked around (just a Little) and I didnt see what I was looking for so I'm asking...

What is the appropriate temperature for idle and for running. I seem to remember seeing at idle something like 163-165 degrees.
