240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

I have a 2007 240 and this year I started to have a problem with the engine while idling out of the channel or picking up a skier the smart craft beeps once then the engine either shuts down or reduces the rpm from about 1200 to about 800.

I had Marine Max look at it and they can't figure it out. They tell me that it is because their is voltage on a purple wire? that should not. They say they isolated they engine from the electronics and it is not the engine.

Problem is very intermittent.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any suggestions would be apprehended.

A few years ago while scalloping in Crystal River Fl, our 2006 240 SD displayed similar symptoms it was the IAC ( Idle Control ) valve on the fuel injection. But my mechanic said he saw the fault on his scan tool. I'm sure that Marine Max scanned the computer for fault codes.

Marine max hooked up there laptop and we drove the boat around for an hour and no codes showed up. They said they isolated the engine from the electronics and the engine is fine the problem is with voltage backfeeding from a purple wire on the harness but they don't know why.

Had something similar with my new 2012 260 Sundeck the first week I had it. Same issue with system restricting rpm's to ~1000. Marine Max picked up the boat from my house (I was out of town by the time they could schedule me in) and sailed to their dealership. They told me they couldn't find any problem and that it was probably some one off glitch that went away. Did some other work I'd scheduled as well. Then, a couple of days later, they called me and said as they were returning it to my dock, they did experience the problem and had to turn back to the marina. Turned out the issue was mis-routed cooling hose which sometimes restricted water flow. Probably not your issue as you say they have traced it to the electronics and not the engine, but the lesson is keep bugging them every time an intermittent problem re-surfaces. Eventually they will experience it.

l like that set-up can you tell me where you purchased the tops from? been looking on-line yours looks like a really nice set-up with the front tent.

Hello, at around 3000 RPM's, with the 350 Mag engine, what kind of speeds are you folks getting? I am around 23mph with 3-4 people on board.

Thanks

Steering Cable Replacement part: i thought I'd save some time for someone else. If you need a replacement steering cable, my 240 SD (2005) is a 17' Teleflex part number SSC13417.

My steering is really tight and the other posts here indicate bad cable.

Thanks

I posted this in the elec section but thought maybe I should post it here. Sorry for the double post. I have a loose wire or something under the helm on my SD240. It kind of has a life of its own because even when the volume is completely turned down I still get static thru the rear speakers. I looked everywhere and moved bundles around and it "fixed it" but I know this is temporary. Has anyone experienced this?

Trim Tabs -
Not sure if this is the right forum but wondering if anyone has had issues with their trim tabs. I've a 2007 240 SD (second hand) and went to use the trim tabs for the first time the other day and they didn't seem to respond. No indication on the SmartGuage nor did it fix the listing to one side. I plan on checking the fuse and pump fluid level but wondering if there is a history with them.

THanks in advance

For the most part, tabs are pretty much bullet proof and this would be, in no way, specific to one boat model. Physically take a look at the tabs while someone presses one of the buttons and see if they move. If this is your first time with tabs, it could just be that you're not using them correctly as it does take a good second or two for the boat to react (there's lot's of threads on this topic that you can search for). Or, maybe it is, indeed, low on fluid or the fuse is popped. Something else to know about -- if you press one tab "up" and one "down" at the same time, you are confusing the motor and it will pop the fuse. The only thing I'm not sure of is if Sea Ray has recently started using Bennett's interface module that prevents this - if you have that module, then the fuse would not pop... but you also wouldn't get any movement from either tab.

Thanks Lazy Daze
Ran the test with someone working the switches and no movement at all. I could hear the pump working but noting happening. I did notice the fluid level is right at the bottom of the fill range. I was going to out some ATF in but the fill hole is pretty small and didn't have a funnel with me. I can't imagine the fluid level being right at the bottom of the fill line would be the reason they are not working....but I've been wrong before. Gonna have the marina take a look at it for me

I can't seem to open the Head mirror to access the storage behind it. It looks like this was a standard feature for 2004, not an option. Can anyone confirm? I don't see any hinge from the outside and when I push the mirror, there does not seem to be any type of catch-latch.

Thanks

If you have both captain and the observers chair on the port side the mirror does not open. If you have only the captains chair and a bench seat on the port side the mirror vanity will open.

SeaNile, WTH?? I saw several recent posts of yours this summer saying how awesome the boat is and how happy you are with the purchase. Did the lake dry up?

Ah, we absolutely love the boat and it really is flawless. Just realizing that with the two kids, swim team and all the other sports/activities we don't have much spare time at all.

Gotcha, we had to ask ourselves many times before we bought, can we make enough time to justify it? Its a tough question every future owner needs to ask themselves. Best of luck, you can always get back in down the road!
