240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

Yep that pretty much sums it up. Now on the newer models it all goes to the bilge.

The water on the deck will go to two places. One being thru the hatches and into the bilge. The other being thru the 2 deck drains, one the the left of the engine compartment and the other being to the right of the engine compartment just below the transom walk thru. The actual hull fittings are towards the transom on either side of the boat about 3 inches above the water line.

Hello, here is a picture of the floor drain and the corner where most of the water ends up going, which is into the bilge. Should this corner be caulked? It does not appear there was any there before.

My 09 260. Has a nice sealed floor but the drain goes into the bilge. Thinking about adding a through hull fitting with a check valve to keep it dry

May just be me, but can't see your picture. I am assuming it is the engine cowling you are showing. I always tried to keep a light bead around mine.

Try this:

I looked at doing this on my 290, but after talking to Sea Ray, the through hull would have been too close (or under) the wtareline vs. the location of the floor drain. You may want to check when your 260 is in the water.

Hello all. We just signed the papers today and hope to take delivery this weekend on a new to us '04 240SD with 5.0L B3. Looking forward to what seems like a great day boat after Sandy totaled the '01 290DA that we owned for only 1 year.

Good luck with your 240! We have the same engine/drive combo and it runs great even with a full load on board.

By the way, just had a bunch of maintenance done to the B3 at the start of the season and the mechanic had to put in what he called "the new style bellows" the and now our boat sounds completely different. It is very loud and throaty at idle. It is taking some getting used to but it does have a little more bottom end punch.

Also, anyone happen to have any of canvas for sale from their 240SD? I am getting ready to buy the enclosures from Great Lakes but would not mind finding some used ones. Also looking for the front Bimini.

Still loving this boat. 5 kids and 2 adults this weekend and had a blast.

Still thinking about getting 24p props with this 6.3 Stroker engine.

Not sure I am thrilled with the new carpets. The fit is just OK but it screams aftermarket to me. Also not sure if I even like having the carpet in vs. the bare fiberglass.

Does anyone know the size (diameter) of the bimini poles? I want to buy clips to hang a flag off the poles. What did you come up with for flying your colors??

Absolutely love my 2004 240 SD. Spent 12hrs on the boat yesterday with 4 adults and 6 kids and had a blast. Anchored up and swam, pulled 2 tubes, waterskiied, etc., and everyone had so much fun. 23 gallons of gas for the day, not bad at all as we ran at 4200rpm for 30 minutes beating the sun going down. Organized everything on board and didn't have anything on deck, 2 wake boards, 2 pair of skis, 3 tubes, 15 life jackets, 3 coolers and a ton of food and snacks. This boat handled it all so well. When we were anchored up it's hard not to imagine a 40 Sundancer but maybe that will come in the future. All I know for is that this 24' boat packs a ton of features and has brought smiles to everyone who has been onboard.

My only thought, still, is to swap out the 22p for 24p to gain some speed and mpg. And a grill would be awesome. I have a large swim platform mounted grill but I'm not sure I want that on this swimplatform. Maybe the smaller 15" or 17" circular grill mounted to the bimini poles would be a better fit.

I tried the Bimini pole mount and Imho just did not work. I went with deck mount and added an extra extention pole and worked great.

Chuck, just out of curiosity, what didn't work with those Charlevoix clips? I use them on my own boat (and a number a friends/family) and we sell a bunch of them. Haven't heard anything from anyone that they don't work? I'd be curious to hear why they didn't work for you? Not doubting you - just wondering.

Dennis, Chuck was referring to mounting a grill on the bimini pole, nothing about the Charlevoix Clips.

Ah! That makes more sense - thanks. Yeah, bimini mounts for a grill are sort of hit or miss. It all depends on where the pole is in relation to where you will stand. The easiest thing to do to figure out if it will work for you (for others reading this) is to physically hold the grill (or a cardboard box or something lightweight) in the approximate position from a particular pole. The bimini mount will hold the grill (without an extension) about 10" away -- that's from bimini pole to the grill mount -- which means the edge of the grill will be a few inches from the pole. Imagine yourself using the grill and see if it is feasible.

The other thing to take into account is that if you have the newer style bimini mounts, they are a "ball and socket" type... which means the pole will rotate... which means the grill won't stay in the position you put it.

Has anyone come up with a good solution to keep the bimini pole from spinning besides using an ugly clamp or vice grip?

I have a 2007 240 and this year I started to have a problem with the engine while idling out of the channel or picking up a skier the smart craft beeps once then the engine either shuts down or reduces the rpm from about 1200 to about 800.

I had Marine Max look at it and they can't figure it out. They tell me that it is because their is voltage on a purple wire? that should not. They say they isolated they engine from the electronics and it is not the engine.

Problem is very intermittent.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any suggestions would be apprehended.

Can't really think of anything off the top of my head, other than replacing one of the ball-sockets with the older style that doesn't rotate. That'd probably be the least noticeable way to go. But, be sure that you'll be happy with access to the grill before you do anything.
