240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

I don't know if the 5.7 was offered in 2006 but the 350 MAG is a 5.7.

Who told you it had a 5.7 in it? Has it been repowered? I do not think the 5.7 was an options in 2006.

Thanks for the reply. According to dealer and owner, the boat has definitely not been repowered. Saw pictures of boat but not engine. Dealer stated engine was 5.7L and not 350MAG. For 2006, only a carbed 5.7L with TKS and a 350MAG were offered by Mercruiser. I will definitely look into this and let you know.

Boat is very clean with less than 100 hours.

...according to the Sea Ray spec sheet for my 2006, standard power was 5.0L MPI Bravo3 at 260 hp.
The optional engines were a 350 Magnum MPI with 300 hp, or the MX6.2 MPI with 320 hp. All engines fuel injected.

I have the 350 Magnum Bravo3 in my boat. We Love it. It runs in the upper 40's top end, and will pull my large frame out of the water on a slalom ski with 10 people on board. I don't think the extra 20 hp of the 6.2 would make much difference.

Re: Water depth

Hi,

Looks like there was a problem with the thermstat housing that was allowing water to by pass the the thermostat, we are now running at about 160.

Hi folks,
Last year I bought a 2006 240 sundeck and have been looking for an anchoring system option. Either a windlass and or hand crancked (winch) set up of the bow. Any ideas? Also we were thinking a pedastal kettle type BBQ on the stern deck. Any suggestions or pointers on that placement and do you dismantle your bbq when you are planning on cruising at high rpm or when wakeboarding (tubing, skiing, etc)?
Thanks
Kam

One of the very few gripes with the design of the great 2001-2008 240 Sundeck is that blasted forward anchor hatch and how the ladder has to be moved to get at the anchor. Real fun when you are trying to anchor is much of a chop. The hatch opens up toward you so you have to sort of bend around it to lift up the ladder to reach down and unclip the anchor from it's hold down, then drop it in the water trying to be sure the rode doesn't get looped around said ladder. Aye Karumba! what a mess. Without totally redesigning the hatch, removing the forward ladder and adding a bow roller not sure how you could fit a winch which would have to be mounted on the hatch cover. Think of my amazement the first time I went to use the anchor. I bought the beautiful boat from the original owners, with only 97 hours on the clock, well I guess they never had used the anchor. The rode was still on the spool and of course not tied off to the eye. Could have been fun if I had not caught it. Can't help with the BBQ, I am still trying to find a place to install a couple of rod holders.

Chuck has posted his kettle grill setup earlier in this thread with pictures. Just do a search and you'll find them. As for the windlass, I wish there was a setup for the sundecks. I'm actually fortunate that my anchor hatch opens sideways, but would love a windlass. We anchor in some tight areas so the windlass would make achoring a lot easier.

There is a setup for a windlass on the sundecks if you want to do away with the front boarding ladder. I saw one on a 290SD once. Sweet system.

Any links. What is fabricated or a kit. Wonder how the bow cover was fabricated. I don't use the front ladder.

It was a SeaRay option on the 290SD. I saw it at the Sea Ray factory a couple years ago. What they did was remove the boarding ladder and extra fiberglass so that there was just a big area below the hatch. The windlass was all attached to the hatch along with the anchor holder/chute. If I remember correctly, the hatch hinged from the side so you could access the rode storage area.

It's not really the HP that is the benefit to the bigger displacement 6.2, it's the torque. We easily get caught up in HP when torque most important in a heavy boat that's that doens't have a performance hull. We need the grunt to move these things.

Just had to "hello".

I haven't been around here in a while and can't believe this thread is still going. Cool, and good to see (sort of) some of the same old familiar faces. :smt038

Jim,

Good to hear from you. Ye it is pretty easy to keep a thread going about one of the best sport boats Sea Ray ever built (IMHO).
Now if Sea Ray could have just installed a bigger engine (LOL) Where is that video of your.....

they did :-D

Well, sort of......but what they did it in also added about 500# plus about another 200# for their version of bigger power so it's a a wash.

I think I've still got them beat, but only because they have more sense than me.

I'll have to see if I have anything new. Sadly, I've yet to get a good running/fly-by video. But I did finally do something with props and am no longer burning them up and while I'm about 500 RPM shy at WOT with them, they did improve cruise even more and I recorded the best WOT of 68.4 at the end of last season in pretty idle conditions. :smt001 I wasn't expecting more than 65 or so.

I also added new stainless cup holders too. :smt043

EDIT: I may have already posted this one; it's about 4 years old and about 6-8 MPH shy of the top.

The old 270 SD has almost identical dimensions to the 240SD; is a bit heavier and can be had with teh 496MAG and is faster than the 240SD when equipped so ... so to me the 270SD is kinda the hi-po 240 SD

I'm not sure I'd consider 1000+ pounds dry "a bit heavier" though. :D Just talking top speed, on a good day it's about about the same as a 240 with a 6.2 comparable loaded at best. I'm not sure I'd call any Sundeck, high performance though. They're incredible in big water and overall ride and handling and personally I think the 240's layout is a lot more efficient (probably the best of any boat within 3' of this size), but big old heavy tubs. :D

Hi Jim

I still have the original Fly-By video you posted several years ago. And I still talk about your boat too to other boaters who are continually amazed at the type of top speeds you get from your 240SD

Even though I sold my 240SD about five years ago, I still wish I had it. This is one of the best sport boats Sea Ray ever produced.

Take care.

Dave

I totally agree. the cockpit on the 270SD is only minimally larger than the 240SD. Most of the "additional" length is in the head and storage compartment and the fact that the swim platform on the 270Sd is "counted" into the length. Both teh 240 and 270 are within a couple of inches of each other on LOA including platform.
