240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

Hi guys!

My name is Joey Cleland and I'm from north Alabama.

Just purchased a 2003 240 Sundeck and the owner lost the deck plate key for the fuel, water and waste deck plates. Anybody know what size key to get for a replacement? 1". 1 1/4", 1 1/2"?

Thanks in advance

I never had a key for mine and never needed one. You may just want to purchase a standard boater plate key from west. I keep one on board but like I said never needed it for the caps.

Nevermind - found the old post - I would not have guessed it would be used as an actual, um, TENT - I didn't think there was enough room up there on a 240 to make a habitable shelter. Cool!

What do you mean? Even on the 220, there would be enough room in the bow to lay down and rest. That's why they make the bow filler cushion. But you better really like the person next to you if you plan on sleeping two up there :)

I am the proud owner of a 2005 SeaRay Sundeck 240. I am also the proud owner of a 10' Epoxy Robert August "Mark Martinson Model" longboard with a detachable Wingnut ][ skeg. For all who are uninformed, this is a very long surfboard. When I take it to the beach with us, it takes up half of the available space inside the boat.
I know that the boat has an optional tower that you could put up with racks for things like wakeboards and waterskis. This board is too long for a rack like that. I think it would be ideal to have some kind of rack that sits on the side of the boat outside the cockpit. I've reached out to several surfboard rack manufacturers, the maker of the surfboard, and asked many friends. I have yet to come up with a solution that I could buy.
I'm pleading to this forums good sense and imagination to help me come up with something. I have some ideas of how this rack would work but I'm afraid it will interfere with docking the boat.

Hi Chuck,
Corresponded in past. Own a 2008 240 SD with 350mag BR3 kept in dry stack in Sydney. Was wondering if you or anyone else can advise me on what is the normal frequency and/or volume of "gear oil" topping up required. Had boat since Sept 2010 and yesterday had to add approx. 200mls (=1cup) for first time. Is this normal. Gone through 1.5 tanks of fuel only. Thought might be effected by heat/weather conditions... our weather has been extremely hot last few weeks e.g av. 80-90F. Appreciate your feedback. Thanks Tania

Hi p5surf,
Have seen around the waterways around sydney a guy who puts a long board surf board on the top, above the bimini using a roof rack type design...similar to the ones designed for snow skies on cars. I think he uses the type that are hined on one end and lock closed and have rubber padding. I suppose you could do a similar thing on the side of the targa if you have one??? Goodluck Tania

Has the lower unit been service or oil changed? After a service I would have to add maybe a cup or so as the air bleeded out. After that maybe a 1/4 cup or so every blue moon. Have you seen a leak anywhere???

Thanks Tannyoz. I don't have the targa on the boat and I'm not keen on putting the tower up. I think that will cost big dollars. Your idea gives me something to think about though. I have two ideas that come into my head. One is some kind of soft-rack along the gunwale that is temporary and hangs over the side (padded of course). The downside to this idea is that I would have to remove the board and rack when docking the boat. The other idea puts the bottom of the board on the swim platform and then up into the seating area along the stern and up into the rear seating area. With this idea, unfortunately, the wind may catch the front end of the board while underway, causing potential vibration problems.
I do like your idea though. I've seen these platform boats that go out in the ocean to big breaks and people hang out on them just far enough to avoid the breaking waves. These boats often have a tower - like you described. I'll have to take a look at some surfing magazines to see if I can get some inspiration.
I'm getting the feeling that I will have to construct something out of PVC, rope, and fenders or similar materials. As for now, the easiest solution is to make my passengers suffer with the board taking up all the room in the boat.

have you considered towing board off swim platform?

I guess this would require some tie down on board?

@tcason the board is big but it is very light. If I tried to pull it with the boat it would go flying all over the place. Unless we used a ski rope and someone actually rode on the board. Overall that's too risky and will likely damage the board somehow.

Welcome aboard Joey. The key pins are 1" inside to inside, 1 1/4" outside to outside. Not sure how they measure them. Mine is made by Perko.

I am usually on Guntersville. Hope to see you on the lake.

Look forward to meeting you, We trailer so we divide our time between Smith, Logan Martin, Guntersville, and Inland Lake. Mostly Logan Martin. See you on the water.

Joey:thumbsup:

I spoke to Tammy today about getting one of these made for my 240SD. Unfortunately she did not keep a good template and would need my boat. It is a bit far from Ft Myers, Florida. I will try to get one made locally.

Jim

I found someone local here in Ft Myers, Fl to create my bow tent. It will look similar to askihms' but will have a zippered front end so we can get on and off the boat from the bow. It will also have the windows/screen on the port and starboard sides. I will post some photos when it is done.

What a great site!
I am getting ready to buy a 240 to replace my 1995 200BR. I'm looking at some used models, 2005 and 2007. One of them has the DTS system. Does anyone have strong feelings about DTS, one way or the other? Is it just a cool extra, or does it make a meaningful difference in the boating experience?
Anyone have any thoughts on differences between the 2005 and 2007 model years?
Thanks!

P5: I'm not sure, but I think Tannyoz was referring to putting the board on your bimini (like in your signature pic). Reading your post, that was my first thought, too. Figure out a way to strap it down and you're good to go. The weight isn't a problem and I highly doubt the wind resistance will be, either. Leave the majority of the board sticking off the aft end and there will be even less.

If you put it on the side of the boat, how would you keep it from bouncing against the side of the hull?

The front of our Bow tent has Velcro so we have easy access to the anchor if it needs to be adjusted. I also use the front opening to make set up easier. I was going to put the windows on port and starboard sides but Tammy recommended putting them forward and aft for better air flow. Simply stated when on the hook the boat follows the wind direction thus better air flow forward and aft.Just my 2 cents.Good luck with the bow tent and look forward to pictures when completed.

Ok so I just had a brain fart. I did post pictures of the rain fly installed. I have not seen the boat since last October so everything is kind of fuzzy. Hope to have it transported to it's new home in Wisconsin by the end of this month.
