240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

How do you guys handle sanitizing the water system? I have heard 1/4 cup of bleech for 20 gals, run the taps, let stand 24 hours, drain, flush, fill with clorinated (city) water. Anyone do it different?

I put a couple cap full of water sanitizing in it and flush the 1st tank full. There after 2 caps with each full up.

So yesterday while pulling up to the gas dock I put it in reverse to slow down then went forward again.Well when I put it in the forward position I went backwards. At this point I was close to the dock and another boat was off the port side and to the rear and I was heading straight for it.I turned the wheel put it in neutral and tried going forward again. I was stuck in reverse. Fortunately one of the guys working the fuel dock realized that I had a problem and ran over pushed me away from the other boat in time. I ended up out in the middle of the marina stuck in reverse. I got towed back to a slip and had it put back in dry stack. MM is coming to get the boat today and should let me know something in the next day or so. At least no one was hurt and no damage was done.

wow, good thing no damage. DO you have dts?

Yes it is DTS. I did a little research and found a recall for the DTS system for 07 & 08. I never received a letter about it but hopefully it applies to my boat. I went out of warranty in June. I have had the smartcraft gauge, transducer & dts all fail in the last year. I think it might be time for an extended warranty.

This exact thing happened to my boat last year and it ended up just being a disconnected shifter cable. The MarineMax where I had bought it (used) a couple of months earlier fixed it, and the skeg end that broke when I went backwards up the launch, for free. As in your case, I was at least glad that no one was hurt and also that it happened right at the launch and not miles away. The only real loss was that my daughter's birthday boat party had to be redirected to a mall scavenger hunt and I could not use the boat while it was in the shop.

Well it turned out to be a broken cable. So I guess it is just part of the joys of boat ownership. I know things brake but the boat is only a little over 2 years old. MM did really seem to want to offer any help but I really did not expect any. I had the 100 hour service done at the same time. So maybe next time I might get a little help since they know I am willing to spend some money with them.

not sure if this is the right way to do this but here it goes. what are you using to tow your 240's. i'm interested in a gas engine and prefer the ford v-10. whatever your towing with, how does it do going up 6% grades? thanks

Has anybody heard anything good or bad about Navis chartplotters or any products from Samyungenc? I have a chance to pickup a Navis 640. I haven't been able to find anybody that has given a review on any of their products. From what I can find they have been in business for over 30 years and they do make some military navigation equipment. The unit looks good but I don't know enough about navigation equipment to know if it is a good unit. Any help will be appreciated.

For those still having hatch covers lifting when towing, does it not have a latch of some sort? Mine does not but thought at some point they put them on.

In 9 years now, mine has never lifted, whether towing or running WOT, even in rough water. The port lounge cushion is another story. Depending on speed, every now and then the wind will suck up right up. So far I've always caught it though. Usually when I'm by myself running hard and have to use my foot to stop it as I shut down.

Glad to see some of you still here too!

Did someone say video?

Jim,
Good to hear from you. Thanks again for the video. One sweet sounding boat!!!
As to the seat, have you moved the clip/latch under the seat? Mine was loose so I moved it about 1/4 inch forward and solved the problem.

Well dang, all this time and I've never thought about looking at that. :smt043 I had thought about a strap/snap but it's not an issue except in pretty rare cases and of course, when no one is sitting on it.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look at it this weekend.

Have an 05 240 SD purchased used this summer.

Started having an issue with the Engine Overheating alarm. Going off at around 150 degrees. This weekend was going through canels in OC MD and alarm was sounding again, Reading was never over 175. It would go off at 120 140 etc but as soon as I picked up spped it would go off.

The horn is acting a little weird as well it is not making a loud sound. Think this could be a loose wire or connection somewhere?

Any links for posiible resolution

I recently purchased a 2007 240 Sundeck and have been reading this forum whenever I get the chance. I have some pretty basic questions regarding the boat layout and maintenance.

1. I have the port-side bucket seat, but it is not able to be swiveled so that is completely rear-facing. It bumps up against the L-shaped rear seating. I have tried folding the seat cushion up, sliding the seat as far forward as possible but it still seems to knock against the rear seats. Is it suppose to be able to face in this direction? I saw a video of the 260 Sundeck that seemed to have this feature. I guess I could force it, but I am afraid of doing damage to the upholstery.

2. I have the 350 Magnum MPI Bravo III engine. What are the routine maintenance checks I should perform before taking it out each time? Specifically, I thought checking the oil would involve checking a dipstick level, but I cannot find a dipstick. I see the oil lube gear monitor. Is that the only oil level I need to worry about? Where do I find the steering fluid level? Sorry about all the newbie questions here. Pictures might be helpful.

I have some other questions but I prefer not to demonstrate my ignorance all at once. Thanks in advance for your help.

First off welcome aboard.

1. Flip up the bolster, Slide the seat all the way back, now swivel 180 degrees, put bolster down.

2. The dipstick is on the starboard side of the engine. Steering fluid level is checked via the pump/reservoir cap. No you need to keep an eye on Engine oil, Steering fluid, Outdrive fluid, Trim Tabs fluid, Trim Fluid, Battery water level, etc, etc. All of these items are covered in the Merc manual you should have gotten with the boat.

ps: I know a fellow 240SD owner you can hire for some pointers. (Grin)

Just have to give a public "Thank You" to Chuck1. He graciously took me under his wing and gave me a 240 SunDeck tutorial aboard the MS Judy. I went from a first time poster to a live demonstration from the Super Moderator himself in less than 24 hours. Talk about a responsive forum!

David,
You are welcome and glad I could help. Hope to see again at the Fall Poker Run/Low Country Boil.
Chuck
