220 DA thread

optional bench seat

My goal for next year is to add additional seating to this boat. I have looked in the parts book and I have discovered that on the 1990 200DA there was on optional bench seat that was not ordered for my boat. So the easy thing would be to order it--but I just found out the the manufacturer is out of business and Sea Ray has no information on the product. So I am looking to find someone whose boat has this option. I would love to see pictures or have measurements so I can have this custom made.

Thanks for any help.

Is this the bench across the stern? Mine is missing also.

I was looking into making something also in the spring.

check out my pics in the virtual marina...I have more if you need.

Hello the MN Sea Ray 220DA owners are here

Hello,
Just found your site.. I bought a very clean, well maintained 1990 Sea Ray 220da last fall. I havn't had it in the water yet. Just waiting for the ice to go out on Lake of the Woods. We plan to put it in at Buffalo Point on the Manitoba side.
Can anyone tell me what a 220DA with a 4.3lx will do on the water? Or what the range is at cruising speed?

Welcome aboard Blaze ! you will like the 220da ( now called the 240 ) not sure about the 4.3 as I have the 5.7....It won't be a speed demon but I'm sure you'll enjoy it.....Dave.

Waxed her today

I got the boat out of winter storage this week. I have been waxing her for the last two days. I hope to launch her next week.

Also--I purchased a swim platform from swimplatforms.com---I will post pictures after I get it installed.

the swim platform will be a great addition ! ( I've been thinking about getting one also )

I've got a '93 230 with the 4.3LX. It will get up on plane with 5-6 adults on board but it is underpowered for this size boat. I don't know the difference in weight/etc between a 220DA and a 230DA but it's probably dang close. I only get about 2.5mpg on mine and if I have to power down often for nowake zones and then hit the throttle often to get it back on plane it will go down to 2mpg real easy. I was expecting more mpg when I bought it but I suppose the little engine is working so hard that it doesn't run very efficiently in this size boat.

I have the 5.7. It is also a bit underpowered--but my main comparison is a twin engine 30 foot baja. I just don't think it is a fair to compare the boats. I find that my gas lasts forever. But I also find that I do alot of hanging out on this boat--while my friends pull the kids around in circles with their boats.

Hey Quint--tell me more about your installed DVD screens. I think my 4 year old would love those. Are you an electrician?

Also--I just constructed (with my husband's help) a bench seat for the front to expand seating. I can't wait to see how I like the new seat while I am driving the boat. It is similar to Quint's seat without the back. We are debating whether we need a backrest for the front seat. I figure that often times I am standing up when I am driving anyway--so who needs a back. We also raised the height of the seat--so maybe we won't have to stand all the time.

Also--the swim platform comes over Memorial weekend. Swimplatforms.com is building 30 platforms a week. I am so pumped to get the platform. I wish I would have ordered it in January.

Here's some pics of my DVD screens.....I ran a power & ground wire behind the head/shower to the engine compartment. I also ran the A/V feed from the v berth screen to the mid cabin screen in the same space.

mid cabin screen...it is mounted on the sub woofer enclosure I made for a powered sub for stereo.

Wendy, any pics of the seat set-up?

mmm....lets try it again.

towing 220DA

What are you towing your boat with? I just got on the 270DA towing thread and they are all freaking out. One guy is towing the 230DA 1993 (pretty much the same boat as ours) with an explorer. I plan to tow with my expedition? Is this enough truck?

If he is towing with the 4.0 or the V-8 Explorer he should be fine.

I am towing with a Dodge Ram 3500 dually, diesel. Overkill, but it's my baby!

The Expedition should be just fine.

Thanks. I'm hoping for more than that too. I'ld like to stay out for 3 or 4 days without refueling. Put in the downriggers and troll when the fishing is good and anchor behind an island when the wind blows, grill a little and enjoy the scenery. In terms of Gallons per hour at trolling speed, what do you think your boat will do?

Marckmann, I'm the guy towing the 230DA with the Explorer, but if you read that thread closely you'll note that mine is not stock and has several modifications. I also go slow and make driving concessions while I'm towing in the interest of safety. I can tell you that I am VERY aware of the boat behind me while I am towing; it's a lot of boat.

However you have an Expedition which is a step up from an Explorer and if it's got the same towing capacity as the guy on that thread - 8,650 lbs - that should be plenty to tow a 220DA. Make sure you're set up for towing though - tranny cooler, etc.

Blaze, I don't know what my fuel burn would be at trolling speeds but every analysis I've seen for all marine engines suggest that loafing along at about 1,500 rpm gets much better mileage than cruising at plane. Maybe someone here has burned a whole tank doing that and can confirm it's the same for our boats.

passenger VS Owner

I continue to find out that being a passenger vs being an owner of a boat are very different experiences. We put her in today and found out that the marina that winterized her--left both batteries on all winter long---so she was dead. javascript:emoticon(':smt021')

I did the math and figured out that I spent 27 years as a passenger. In those 27 years I never really understood the amount of work that is required so that the passengers can enjoy the boating experience. I am starting to figure this out. Anyway--I really need the boating experience to go smoothly. My husband is not yet sold on the idea of boating. He did let me purchase the boat. But--I need it to go well so he doesn't trade the boat in for a larger tractor. (I live in Iowa--people own tractors in Iowa--not boats)

I spent 4+ whole days--washing, waxing, custom fitting carpet, custom fiting new seating. During this time--I failed to check the battery. I really should have checked the battery. OR--I really should have spent that time in an engine repair class.

Anyway---here is my question. Do you carry one of those portable battery jump boxes with you in your boats? We borrowed one today--and it was wonderful. I am considering the purchase of one. The 220DA has limited storage space--Do you think this is a good use of space? Do you carry one with you? javascript:emoticon(':smt017')

Any general battery advice is welcomed.

I have two batteries and a switch that selects battery "A" ( starting battery - high CCA ) battery "B" ( house battery - large deep cycle ) or "both". You should never run your boat on "both."
This way you always have a fresh battery for starting at the end of the day. Also NEVER turn your battery switch with the engine running....it will ruin your alternator. Also trickle charge your dead batteries overnight for best charge & top off with distilled water before charging.
