2008 Jul 18th-Aug 3rd Seattle/San Juan Island/BC Gulf REDZVS

Not sure if we truly need a Southern Tour Guide. To date, Dave has done an excellent job sifting through the various recommendations and proposed itinearies and then distilled this into a partial itineary for the southern group. Both Jim and I have provided input as much as we could, though since neither of us has been to the SJI's, we've had to rely heavily on Dave's guidance. Not to say that I personally wouldn't feel 100% comfortable with Dave taking on that guide role, if he so chooses. But to date, he's done a fantastic job of "facilitating" a more or less collaborative effort.

So stay tuned... The southern group is ROCKING and ready to launch! (~;
I agree and think if we have an itinerary that is laid out, we'll be fine. Dave's work has turned up way more than we can visit in a two week period, so we have a partial list for 09 already started!! I think Dave is leading by default since the rest of us are just happy to be along for the ride. Any suggestions provided will be considered and itinerized (is that even a word?) to fit. Who knows, we may have a Southwest and a Southeast group by the time we're done!

As far as the ROCKING goes, I'd say it's closer to a Rocking CHAIR than a Rockin' Group? But we're definitely ROCKIN'!!!

Todd, as far as reservations go for Lopez, Roche and Victoria, I know we can make a group reservation at Victoria do we need to make individual reservations at the others?

Hi Todd,

Not sure if we truly need a Southern Tour Guide. To date, Dave has done an excellent job sifting through the various recommendations and proposed itinearies and then distilled this into a partial itineary for the southern group. Not to say that I personally wouldn't feel 100% comfortable with Dave taking on that guide role, if he so chooses. But to date, he's done a fantastic job of "facilitating" a more or less collaborative effort. I also just talked to Mike (my friend from Sacramento that'll be joining us on the southern route). He's been up there a couple of times, having visited each and every one of the sites we've got our eyes on so far. He and I will get together in the next couple of weeks to chart out the 2nd half of the southern trip (and maybe even make a recommendation or two to tweek the 1st half??). We will then share that info with Jim and Dave and anyone else wanting to stay south for further input and hopefully soon thereafter, final charting of this itineary. So stay tuned... The southern group is ROCKING and ready to launch! (~;

Is the itinerary listed anywhere ?
What I think we would like it to be able to have a day at launch and a day or two before the clan scurries away?

I will review the feedback I got from the marina's and relay the info. Doug and I will hopefully talk tonight, I just got back from dance and swimming lessons, while the admiral is teaching dance so, we'll see how far we get.........

It's time to start making plans and reservations so...... for those with smaller gas budgets that didn't recently get a smokin' deal on a lightly used, but very dirty 260 DA, here is an alternative itinerary for those less ambitious:

One night in: Lopez Island, Roche Harbor and Victoria with the whole group. The Northern group is only planning one night in Victoria but us slackers will spend two or three nights in Victoria, a night at Sidney rounding the corner to spend the night at Butchart Gardens or Todds Inlet depending on mooring availability. After Butchart, we'll head to Poet's Cove for a night and then re-enter the U.S. (You HAVE your passports in hand by now right?) via Roche Harbor and either spend another night at Roche or head to Friday Harbor. After that, we're wide open and will figure out where we want to go. That takes care of 11 nights and we only have about 5 - 7 nights left depending on departure date. We're open to suggestions for the balance of the trip? A night on a mooring ball somewhere or anchored in a cool protected cove somewhere?

I'm guessing we should be making reservations for these stops to assure a place to plug in for the night? Man, I C A N ' T wait! :)
Here it is again....

Ok, sorry, I read that as more of ideas than the plan.
So I just got off the phone with Doug and we've somewhat sketched out a plan.
What I will do is re-email the marinas and let them know we still are coming.

IF YOU ARE INTENDING ON COMING I NEED A PM WITH YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS SO I CAN CC YOU ON THE CORRESPONDENCE WITH THE MARINA(s) AND/OR PASS THEIR CONTACT INFO ALONG SO EVERYONE CAN CONTACT THEM AND MAKE RESERVATIONS.

I want to know the marina’s requirements so we can meet them. I look forward to getting this knocked out soon rather than be worried someone is included or not.

Todd, besides Lea and I, add "Dawg Fish" a 2002 Bayliner 2452 owned by Don and Vicki Sandstrom... They will head north with us.

sounds great Doug.
He must be the "no Puter" Guy.
Sounds good

Hello All:

Just wanted to let you know that I will not be able to make this event because of timing. Instead we will take our 320 up to Anacortes on Thursday August 28th and pull out in Olympia on Thursday September 4th. We have reservations in Roche Harbor for that time period. Because our boat is at Detroit Lake in Oregon for the summers, it did not make economic sense to split the summer lake season up. If anyone is in the area, give us a hail and it would be great to visit with you!

Best of Regards,

Marqus

Sorry to hear you won’t make it, but We’ll be sure to hook up with you when you do make it up.

Ok,
So, here we go.
The North end group ~ An Itinerary assault, if you will.
I would like to have the North end clan agree on the itinerary before I E-mail the Marina's.
South End Group,
Give us North End clan a Meeting Place we can Expect to meet you on Thursday July 31st. (I was hoping Poet's Cove, then bail out Friday morning for those heading out)
My Admiral, Monica, put the following itinerary together and other than the tail end I though it was pretty good. She even did the research for the travel distances using the “2008 Boater’s Resource” magazine.
The reason I wanted to edit the end was to meet back up with the South Group because many traveling to get here want to pull out Friday, Aug 1st.

I would suggest that Maybe a trip to Princess Louisa is injected on the return trip from Desolation, if everyone agrees. This is an more reasonable trip from near Jervis inlet.
I am hoping that my Aunt and Uncle's island sale to the BC Government as a marine park has taken place by then and I can reserve it for us for a night. This would be injected as that "3rd Night in Desolation"

If you agree, trust me, it's equally as beautiful as Desolation and I'd love the opportunity to show everyone a huge part of my family's life before it drastically changes.

Ok, enough for now, keep in mind the goal to meet with the Southern Runners on Thursday. We want active input to mold this into a solid itinerary for the North Runners and I can send out the e-mail the affected about our invasion.

Knowing some have kids and would like to enjoy more swimming opportunities, hiking, etc. in addition to the 3 desolation sound anchorages you have set up (which I think are totally awesome), I'd like to add the following deviations for those who want to try something other than a dock on the way up and the way back... We'll still be within haling distance but I believe will be an awesome adventure... Even if they only visit for a short while and then go back to the docks... Anyway...

July 23rd, add Garden Bay (north end of Pender Harbor) Garden Bay Marine park anchorage for those wanting to be on the hook in Pender Harbor and swimming and hiking up the small hill for fantastic views... a dink will be needed...

July 29th, also add Smuggler Cove Smuggler Cove map for those with kids that want to anchor in a very protected (and warm water area)... instead of Secret Cove on the dock. (Secret Cove will be a short stop for gassing up for those wanting to fuel up before heading the few miles to Smuggler Cove for anchoring)...

If you only want to stay on the hook one of the above days... Smuggler Cove is a place not to be missed... I promise... it is truly worth a stop and see...

its the place centered in the photo with the boats at anchor... but there is another anchorage to the right of the boats in the photo that is where we will anchor...

Yes and accross the bay from Secret Cove is Buccaneer Bay. That's a great spot for kids and swimming. the tide goes out and it's a huge white sandy beach

I just read up on this post...I have been too busy or my own good. We would definitely like to go. One slight adjustment is that the San Juan stops, we will forego and go to Lopez. My in-laws live in Fishermans Bay and need to keep the peace in the family by stopping by. My wife Marnie, myself (Scott), and 5 girls will be going. Their ages are 16, 15, 13, 10, 8. We will plan to send the three oldest to Lopez for part of the trip.

Last year we went to Nanaimo, we are looking forward to a return trip.

Scott

Scott, look forward to meeting up with everyone and having a great time. I'm presently building a cruise list and will publish it when I think it as complete as I can get it... Oops, forgot to add a camera to the list...

BTW, 5 girls??? You are definitely going to heaven...

Email Todd (Nehalennia) with contact info (email, cell). He is putting together a list of marinas and contact info so everyone can make their own reservations...

Jeremy: Welcome to the SJI's!

Here is the phone number for WA State Wide Trailer Permit Phone Number: 360-664-9494

There is reciprocity for seven western states. Actually it's even more than that now since OK and TX have been added. I think if you get one for EITHER OR or WA you will be covered in both. An Annual Permit is $90 and individual trips are $10 or $20 in WA State. They can handle it all by fax which is extremely convenient too. The bummer with the individual permits is that you have to plot your course on the highway to and from.

Here is another link:

It would have too easy if CA was on the list.... it may be less hassle to just get an annual. I don't suppose they allow this transaction to be completed online instead of paper based methods? Caltrans (California DOT) refuses to step in this decade and allow permits online. :) Thanks for the phone number and info. I appreciate it!!!

Jeremy: It can all be done by fax in Washington. I think if you talk to someone there, they can send you the forms by e-mail. Include your CC info and your all set. They don't have electronic signatures, and they still insist on that part for whatever reason. I would think the CC would be good enough?

They can tell you about the reciprocity in Oregon too. Looking at the site, you can do it for $10 for a 3 day permit, so you would need one for the inbound and another for the return. I'm sure you'll be on I-5, but I don't know how you handle rest or fuel stops? They make it sound like those have to be preplanned as well, but I can't imagine that is the case?

That sounds great! I'll likely join in after Roche or around there.
I had a couple thoughts... more like thinking out loud...
* The Straight of Juan de Fuca gets quite rough if there's a breeze blowing... aspecially the last couple miles before the harbor. I suggest having a 'plan B' in case it's windy that day (which it often is).
* Butchart Gardens has an awesome fireworks display every Saturday night through the summer. We regularly anchor in Tod inlet for the night and watch the show from the water... it's quite popular these days. Note there's no fuel stops in Saanich inlet (even though the maps say Mill Bay has fuel... nope... it's closed now).
* Maple Bay is a beautiful spot but the sun goes behind the mountainside quite early in the afternoon. It's also usually booked most of the summer. Telegraph harbor on Thetis island is just a few miles north of there. They've been catering to some local poker runs lately and they love having the groups of boats visit. It also has a large covered area that overlooks the marina that's suitable for hangin' out. For the poker runs they have a large pit and roast a pig... it's quite a sight and absolutely delicious! Oh, both Maple and Telegraph still have fuel docks.

Magster, I'm glad you're considering coming as well.
Send me a PM so I have your e-mail. I'll cc you on the correspondance.
Tonight I'll be sending out the e-mail to the affected Marinas of the day we'll be visiting and asking them to let us all know what they require us to do to make and solidify reservations.
