We've got some nets that we'll bring, assuming they aren't shredded by then! The movies sound like a great idea so we'll drag some of our favorites along. What a great idea.

Mental Note: In addition to the GPS and Dinghy add LCD projector to the must have SJI boating item. Well, maybe not....

In my case, I'll also be bringing my freediving gear, a spear gun, and maybe even a small scuba tank and regulator. The scuba gear would be useful to clear fouled ground tackle..... Hummm... I think I need a bigger boat! ((~;

We'll have some room and you're welcome to throw some stuff in our boat. It's not to late to upgrade however! The boat shows and the deals are in full swing and I'm sure a LOT of nice used boats will be on the market pretty soon. They will be either from folks with ARM Mortgages or from trade-in's!

So will Canadian authorities have any problem with a spear gun? Do you have to do something special to declare it? I'm guessing it would be the same as a hand gun and some additional forms need to be filled out. That or just conveniently forget that it's aboard.....

Sounds like a great trip has been planned! What is the smallest boat that will be making the trip?

I'm not sure if my brother will be able to make the whole trip or not, He's in a 19 SeaRay Seville. My Cousin's 225WE will be there too. I think he's actually 24' overall.

I may have some free diving gear as well.

Get out here Ghuskin

Thanks Sundancer ~ I appreciate the offer! Hopefully, we'll be able to fit everything on our boat. My biggest 'issue' right now is re the dinghy. I am not too keen on investing close to $500 on Weaver Snap Davits for this one trip (I don't have much use for the davits otherwise). This Spring I may just evaluate how leaving the inflated dinghy on the foredeck works out for some of the shorter jaunts the southern iteneary includes. I also want to create some sort of setup that allows me to set the trolling motor battery next to my 3-battery bank in the engine compartment while underway, thinking that I could then use a simple setup to charge the battery during the travel legs. We'll see what I come up with.

Does anyone have any good suggestions/ideas where I might be able to store a couple of fold-up crab pots? Maybe those could also be set in the engine compartment - on the starboard side right next to and against the sewage holding tank? Hummm... lots of details to work out yet. I love this stuff!!!!

My signature as originally set up got messed up when this list changed severs. Several character I had previosuly used did not "translate the same way. I haven't taken the time yet to set up a new signature.

Todd,

I'd live to! the problem is getting the admiral to overnight on the boat. Her idea of roughing it is not having room seervice. I've only spent 1 night aboard the boat, and that was at the dock with my 8 y.o. son.

Aside from sleeping aboard (2 adults, 2 children), I have several items that would make me nervous at this stage. Is the boat mechanically sound enough for the trip. Will my trailer make it? (Only sits on trailer in winter) I've only had 1/2 season using boat and am still getting comfortable with how she handles different conditions.

Anyway, we're doing a non-boating trip to Chicago and Grand Haven trip in June. 2009 will be a non-boating trip to South Carolina and D.C. I'll make a proposal for 2010 trip.

You folks have fun, and post many pics!

The smallest boat on the trip so far is a RU 260. It's a twin oar powered inflatable. Might even upgrade to a 3.5 FS outboard!! It's about 8 feet long I believe. :)

Crab Pots!! I forgot! We'll need some of those too! DOH! I think it's time to start a list....

I don't think we're going to bring a motor for our dinghy (WHEN we get one!). I think we'll just go with the twin oars to make storage easier. It would be nice to have an overpowered inflatable along though.

GG,that's right. I knew you were similar but slightly bigger than me. Any do you have space to put the OB under the aft seat. Does you're fold up like mine. Maybe you could make a small bed for it under there? I my get an inflatable dink and a elec trolling motor for the kids to explore or for cruising into shore if we're on the hook

We have a Minkota Saltwater series trolling motor for our 8' Achilles. It has been serving us VERY well in moving us and the dog between the boat and the shore/dock when needed. The admiral absolutely loves the trolling motor - especially considering that she'd use to row in circles using the oars! LOL!! The trolling motor isn't nearly powerful enough to get the dinghy on a plane, but it does move it along at a decent clip - well worth it in my opinion.

As to storrage thereof, we've never tried to slide it under the aft bench - and yes, ours does fold up into the transom - a very nice feature. We typically make use of the added space to store our large cooler when under way. Because the Sundancers are such "tail draggers" (ours certainly is with the 7.3 ltr. V-8), I don't like that much weight sitting out back on the swim step. With that said, however, we have had the big cooler sitting on the buit-in swim step (not the extended one) when under way without much of a problem. Add to that 4 adults, 8 scuba tanks and gear.... it's a good thing the ocean was rough and we had no desire to get on a plane! (~; As it relates to storrage of the trolling motor, the biggest concern to date has been the pretty darn sharp prop of the motor itself. It will eat up bare feet and ankles when laying on the deck! So we keep the egg-crate-like carton it shipped in bungeed around it when in storrage at home or on the boat. I still have to devise a more permanent sollution to this. Maybe a cheaper foam-filled version of a small Pelican case that I can "snap" onto it? I'm sure I'll think of something eventually.

That's what I was thinking of a small rubbermaid low profile with foam that it rests in

I wonder if one could use something like a rail-mount outrigger base plate, but mounted in a vertical position on the transom rail, to mount the trolling motor to during travels?

I would think so, I'll know more once I actually have the boat home long enough to sort out storage and configuration space.

Hey Todd,

Did you ever follow up with any of the previously interested parties wanting to join this cruise? Seems to me that this thread has been rather quiet (with the exception of you, GoAweigh, Sundancer, David M., and myself)?

Smanier is in, He sent me a private message he is going North.
There are several others from IBOAT NW_2008 Jul 18th-Aug 3rd Seattle/San Juan Island/BC Gulf REDZVS~~~a local group

I will ramp up contact here in the next couple weeks and get some commitments.

I also received a couple of follow up e-mails over the last week from some of the marinas we have contacted indicating a large contigent planning on visiting and requesting moorage. Now that we've split the group, I'd like a "South end Commodore" to take the reigns for the 6- or 7 days we'll be separated.

So, is it too early to make reservations?

More importantly, will Crocs be allowed on this trip? :)

No seriously, Doug and I plan on talking tomorrow night but I still would like a Southern end tour guide.

Everyone serious it's time to get involved

Hi Todd,

Not sure if we truly need a Southern Tour Guide. To date, Dave has done an excellent job sifting through the various recommendations and proposed itinearies and then distilled this into a partial itineary for the southern group. Both Jim and I have provided input as much as we could, though since neither of us has been to the SJI's, we've had to rely heavily on Dave's guidance. Not to say that I personally wouldn't feel 100% comfortable with Dave taking on that guide role, if he so chooses. But to date, he's done a fantastic job of "facilitating" a more or less collaborative effort. I also just talked to Mike (my friend from Sacramento that'll be joining us on the southern route). He's been up there a couple of times, having visited each and every one of the sites we've got our eyes on so far. He and I will get together in the next couple of weeks to chart out the 2nd half of the southern trip (and maybe even make a recommendation or two to tweek the 1st half??). We will then share that info with Jim and Dave and anyone else wanting to stay south for further input and hopefully soon thereafter, final charting of this itineary. So stay tuned... The southern group is ROCKING and ready to launch! (~;
