2008 CSR Barnegat Bay Regatta and Gunkhole Event

I can't committ to this date as I have tentative reservations for the MM Getaway to Ocean City, MD that weekend.

Use to like going to OC by boat. First time there was with my 26' when it was still pretty new. Damned outdrive bellows tore on me while I was there and the bastard who fixed it overcharged and broke the gimbal housing, which I had to replace the next spring. The other two times were uneventful. The last time was in 98 and the stupid outdrive seized up a couple of miles off the Jersey coast. Lucky it wasn't further in the trip. Bought Just Ducky that winter. Sterndrives just aren't made for the long haul.

Best regards,
Frank

ok, all in favor of a change in venue say "aye." doesnt matter to me. whatever is convenient for everyone. the only drag is that it seems that aquapalooza is to be held there the week after, which could make one or both events anticlimactic and ho-hum.

true, the waters are a bit shallower on the approach, but that shouldnt be enough to discourage us. we are barnegat bay boaters. we eat, sleep and shave in 2.5' of water. this is why God created prop pockets! if you have a color gps, getting in is actually quite simple (just steer your boat like a video game and stay in the deeper water). you can actually see the shallower areas (see satellite photo).

.

As Frank said, it is a bit small back there. But tices can be rough for a raft-up on certain days.

How about Silver Bay? Plenty of room and enough draft. This would make aquapalooza a very different event in different spot.

Alex.

Silver bay works well for me.
Less loonies than at Tices -> and better protected against wind.

Definately good 5'-6' water all around. Easy Jetski access for me :)

Sounds good. I'll let you guys with more Barnegat Bay experience decide on the place. I'm in either way.

silver bay also works for me easy access (red bouy 32) as long as the jelly fish aren't aware of our plans. Tices the next week will be the second round.

Silver bay is fine too, although the engines will barely have time to warm up before we get there.

Best regards,
Frank

Silver Bay great location. Close to OBM. I can save my gas for Tices following weekend. This year I will have to learn to swim with the Jelly Fish.

silver bay is closer for me too. BUT it gets real rocky in there on saturdays with boat traffic. raftups could be problematic.

That's true. How about Baltimore Inner Harbor?!

I've got another proposed location. Pelican Island. for those who may not know, if you head south on the ICW and take a left just before going UNDER the tom's river bridge, there's a channel marked with "sticks." follow that channel all the way in. it's swimming distance (sort of) to the beach and there's a guy there on the beach that rents access to water trampolines and floating rock climbing things (great for the kids). they even pick the kids up from your boat and take them over on waverunners. we get there a couple of times per year and it's a lot of fun. more importantly, it's a NO WAKE zone (ie: no possibility of gelcoat stress cracks!). i believe the anchorage can accommadate the 10-12 boats we might get. the pics below are from last summer.

(the anchorage is btwn Harbor Island and Route 35)

Ron,
I like the proposal and it's sounds like fun. I think I know the place, if anything I'm sure it's not hard to find. I've herd this is a good spot to watch fireworks on 4th. I assume there's enough depth. I think if the jelly fish arrive in the area, this spot wont be any different than Silver Bay, so we got nothing to loose.

I just want to mention that the only uncomfortable spot in Silver Bay I know is in the cove (all the way in to the left as you enter). I think this is the only spot jetski owners know and they do a pretty good dam job to anoy boaters in there. Any other spots are fine. I've never seen boaters cruising by disrespecting others anchored closer to shore, but it doesn't mean I'll never see them in the future :)

I'm in, either way.

Alex.

alex, this spot is probably more immune to jellies than silver bay b/c the water is cooler and closer to the ocean. it keep them at bay for a few weeks longer.

my experiences in silver bay raft-ups have been nerve-wracking. last summer one rafted boat went up, while the other was in a trough and one rubrail slammed violently down on the other with an alarming fiberglass on fiberglass crack. and it is NOT the PWC people causing the wakes. it the heavy boat traffic that traverses the channel, the the dumb-a$$e$ that power down 500 yards before the anchorage, as well as the runabouts that mosey through the anchorage at what they think is a "slow" speed - these folks are way too STUPID to realize that at that "slow" speed, they are throwing the wake of a 45 footer! we've all seen these people:smt013 and no matter how many fenders are out, no matter how tightly the boats are tied together, when boats in a raft up are of different displacements, they bob at different rates and heights. i cant relax in that type of setting. that being said, silver bay during the week, or when anchored alone, is great.

Ron,
I don't have much experience in large raft ups. I hear your point and don't mind to follow what you or other experiance boaters suggest. So far, any spot that was mentioned is fine for me.

Alex.

OK, Tices is the wind is light otherwise behind Pelican Island, or forget Tices and just make it Pelican Island? Either is fine with me. Good shelter around Pelican Island for tubing and water skiing with the PWC, which I'll probably tow down behind Just Ducky

Best regards,
Frank

Any spot is fine by me.

And yes. . I am one of those Lunatics that turn the Cove in Silver Bay into a wave pool. :) I really hate it when some yahoo actually ANCHORS in the middle of the cove.

On a Saturday afternoon in July, I won't be towing any Jetskis across the the ICW. The water is often rough enough out in the open bay that we don't venture the Jetskis out even solo.

I like that cove. Go to the Boat House for Breakfast. Same family runs the place that ran the Wheel House in Seaside Park before State purchased land to make Island Beach State Park 50' bigger! No place to dock your big boats. I take my 13' Whaler drop of the gang at restaurant, then beach her and then walk over. Great food good price.
