Hi, Planing our first multiple day trip!
(Wife is nervous with the 25 ft sundancer)
I have made reservations for West Hampton town Marina ( 1 night 8-13 ) and Greenport Townsend Manor Marina ( 8-14 & 15th)
Staying inside.
The tides are as follows: Moriches Inlet High: 12:32 PM
(Fire island 1:15pm Hi tide from where I am leaving from)
What time should I leave?
Next Day>
Shinnicock Low tide 9:52am / Hi 3:40 Pm
What time should I leave?
Not sure about the return trip where to stay 8/6 Monday? May end up back at West Hampton
We typical cruise around 22 MPH
I have New GPS & Chartbook / Cruising guide. No radar.
Thanks John G.

I made a trip up that way about 5 years ago on our 30' sundancer... We went from NJ to NYC, to Port Jeff to Essex, CT. Then trough Plumb gut to Greeport and the out the Shinicock to the Mansequan Inlet... To be honest, we never considered the tides... If we were in a sailboat we would have had to. All you really need is a chart plotter to navigate and reservations... Take your time and don't worry... You will have fun... The Shinicock cannel has a lock which they use for high and low tides... We happed to to catch it at slack so the gates were open... All it means it may take a little longer with you have to use the locks... BTW it is a good idea to bring tools...

See ya in Greenport John.....consider Watch Hill FI on the way back...will be heading there Tuesday.

Slack tide sounds good timing for Shinicock
If the G.S.Bay is rough I would like to break it up more. My back starts to getting tight after a couple oh hours so thats why I like West Hampton town marina
It appears to be 1/2 way and Watch Hill is only 45 min. from home ( Fire Island is in my Back yard ) so if I get that close the wife would most likly want to go home.
There is time to figure the last leg of the trip out and I am sure it will be easier to get the Sunday night Reservation now that Friday & Sat is set.
SIDE STORY: I Went to Greenport last week by Car ( nice ride with all the Sod farms and wineries ) Had Lunch at Clordioes ( 1.5 Hr Wait ) We Sat next to "Janice" from the Sopranos. People where asking her to see The Rolling Stone Tatto on her Breast on the show.
She was talking to my wife and said "What the hell is wrong with that guy would I really want a tatto on my T*T" Guess there is not much acting there. She said she is waiting for the Soprano Movie.
Oh and the food? Good seafood ( Janice had a Hot dog.) Ugh..
Thanks. See ya John G

Look like the trip is all set. Weather looks good!
Looking for any idears where to make a pit-stop from lindenhurst to West hampton? Possible another Marina on the way to check for the next trip. Cheaper gas on the way?
Anyone from the south shore take this trip and how long the first leg may take at 22 - 24 MPH. not sure how many 5mph zones?
finish Plotting on GPS tommorow.
West hampton thursday - Greenport Friday - Sat

John, Please post back how you made out. I am doing your exact trip the last week in August but not staying in WH. I am going right to Greenport. I have been warned by others about going through Moriches. I am guessing high tide is a must?!?!? I was also told that is isn't marked. But according to the charts it looks clearly marked.

Would like to heard from others (and you after the trip) how you made out going through Moriches Bay. I think that is the only obstical. Everything else looks like a beautiful ride.

Enjoy your vaca!

Hi, Yes. We are leaving tommorow about 3 hours before Hi-tide. It is about 35 miles to West hampton from Lindenhurst so thats around a 2 1/2 hours at 22mph. with one break should do it. Not sure how many 5mph zones
We have only been boating for one year but with all the trips back and fourth to Fire island, Boating in "skinny water" is a daily occurance.
May look for a nice big expensive boat to follow just like we use to follow the ferrys to Fire Island. I am also looking foward to Shinnecock on friday.

Weather: NFG! Bad for Thursday.
Going to call Frank at West Hampton to see if I can change my reservation from Thursday to Sunday. Go all the way to greenport on Friday. Anyone know another stop over for Sunday night. Looking West hampton / Shelter Island ect....

:smt013 Sorry John... weather is sooo frusterating.

btw... did you get updated buoy coordinates at Moriches? I'm trying to find out where i can get them. Also, were you planning on hitting the Shinnecock locks when they are closed or open?

I was told, if you are a seatow customer, you can call them up and they will guide you through Moriches. Not sure though.

John - I cruise at 21 to 22 knots. It takes me 2 hours from SS3 in Lindenhurst, to Westhampton Town Dock. There are very few 5 MPH zones, primarily by the two bridges, so does not add much time to the trip. Frank the Dock Master is a great guy! Don't forget to enjoy the journey, that is what boating is all about. Bring a camera - Great beach/Island photo opps on way.

Well weather is looking up for Friday - Tuesday
I plan on taking Friday to travel all the way to Greenport so I think its more important to go through Moriches near high tide than worry about the Shinnacock Locks. ( take it as it comes ) I am looking into the buoys update?
I would also like get info on the Peconic, Should I take a straight line or hug the lower edge of the coast?
Thanks John G.

Greenport was the last stop on a two week trip we finished last Sunday. I keep the boat in Blue Point and cruise at around 23 knots (26mph). It took us 3 hours 10 minutes from Townsend Manor in Greenport to tie up in Blue Point. ALWAYS schedule your transit through Moriches Bay for high tide at the USCG Station. Once you've done that, with the way the waters move, you'll hit Shinnecock at a time where the locks are closed (this is good). Once you've locked through I would take the north route through the Peconic around Shelter Island. From Lindenhurst I would plan between 3h15m and 3h30m to Moriches and another 2h15min to 2h30min from the locks to Greenport. Make sure you know where Buoys 18, 26 and 28 are in Moriches before leaving, they're in differnet locations than your GPS will show and are even different from last year.. Good luck and have fun.

BMAC -

Hey man, you have me a little confused here. I have a few questions for you...

1. You said it took 3 hrs and 10 minutes from Greenport to Blue Point. I know it takes me about 45 min to get to Blue Point. Which would make John and my trip (we cruise about the same) around 4 hours. But you also said (on your low end estimates) 3hrs and 15 minutes to Moriches from Lindy and also another 2 hrs and 15 min from the locks to Greenport (leaving out Moriches to locks but np). That would make the trip 5.5 hours. Were you just giving high estimates to play it safe?

2. You said to take the "north route" through the peconic. I actually was wondering the same question as John (straight shot vs hug the coast). What do you mean by "North Route" does that mean you go AROUND Robins Island? Sorry man for the confusion

3. Moriches Bay - Is it possible to get the GPS coordinates of 18,26 and 27 from the coast guard?

3a. Can you share your experience going through Moriches (i.e. Did you shoot from 26 -> 28 skipping 27 as i have heard from others) Also... did you bump bottom?

4. Can you share your experience going through the locks when they are closed? Does closed mean you have to wait in line to get in somewhere?!?!

Anyways... sorry for the book and the million questions. Just trying to get as much info about this trip as possible.

Thank you very much... you advice so far has been helpful.

From what I have read regarding the locks form here & BOATED-com
The Locks being closed when going south helps because the Current pushes you ( not good) where if you are going north you have to motor threw against the current. This conditon is a bigger problem with the larger boats include a side wind / Winds coming from the east / west this is also a problem
I have also heard that with a smaller boat 24 + many of these problems are not there
( although I wish I could own a 40+ boat to have these problem) If the Locks are open and there is no wind Just cruise....
I would like to know the answer for the Peconic North Route?

I was also thinking of when / where to get gas? I am full now so I will wait till I get through Moriches ( stay light as possible)
I saw that Jackson's Marina Shinnecock as per the seatow looked good.
JG

I was just out there last week. Takes 1.5 hrs to get to Moriches from Lindenhurst at 24 knots. Go directly from R26 to R28 and skip G27 as it's in the wrong place. I have gone through there 2hrs after high tide and never saw less than 6 ft depth.

Best place for fuel is just before the locks on the east side.

6 ft? Wow thats great. Should be there 1 hour before Hight tide.
As you know if you go to fire Island much 6 ft is a gift.
Still waiting to hear about the North Peconic route info?
Thanks all ( 12 hrs and counting....)
John G
