1st overnight Trip Lindy>West Hampton> Greenport

Keep Red buoys on left in peconic bay and little peconic bay. From red 18, head north to red 14, continue to keep red on left. Continue up Shelter Island sound (west side of shelter island) to Greenport. Double check your charts to confirm the above buoy numbers, since I am home looking at an older chart, but unlike the south shore, not much changes on the north shore in the deeper water. Hope this helps.

Dani-Lu and SeaBird - Great Info... thank you very much!!!

SeaBird - did you call the Moriches Coast Guard to get those buoy coordinates? Also... can you see R28 from R26? How long does it take to go through this "hairy" section? Thanks again!

Ok here are the numbers for buoys 26-29 which I got from Tow Boat US back in June.

And yes, you can see R28 when you get to R26. Look to the northeast and ignore the G27 that's between them.

R 26 - 40' 47.298N
072' 44.304W
G 27 - 40' 47.639N
072' 44.147W
R 28 - 40' 47.789N
072' 43. 836W
G 29 - 40' 47 634N
072' 43, 239W

SeaBird - Thank you very much. Seems pretty straight forward.

Straight forward it is. You'll be fine 1hr before High Tide. Just make sure you are referencing the tide at the Coast Gaurd Station in Moriches and not the inlet.

Also depending on the time of day you are passing through, keep an eye out for all the fishing boats that will be in the channel in Moriches Bay.

John - Can you post back what you learned?

BMAC -

Hey man, you have me a little confused here. I have a few questions for you...

1. You said it took 3 hrs and 10 minutes from Greenport to Blue Point. I know it takes me about 45 min to get to Blue Point. Which would make John and my trip (we cruise about the same) around 4 hours. But you also said (on your low end estimates) 3hrs and 15 minutes to Moriches from Lindy and also another 2 hrs and 15 min from the locks to Greenport (leaving out Moriches to locks but np). That would make the trip 5.5 hours. Were you just giving high estimates to play it safe?

2. You said to take the "north route" through the peconic. I actually was wondering the same question as John (straight shot vs hug the coast). What do you mean by "North Route" does that mean you go AROUND Robins Island? Sorry man for the confusion

3. Moriches Bay - Is it possible to get the GPS coordinates of 18,26 and 27 from the coast guard?

3a. Can you share your experience going through Moriches (i.e. Did you shoot from 26 -> 28 skipping 27 as i have heard from others) Also... did you bump bottom?

4. Can you share your experience going through the locks when they are closed? Does closed mean you have to wait in line to get in somewhere?!?!

Anyways... sorry for the book and the million questions. Just trying to get as much info about this trip as possible.

Thank you very much... you advice so far has been helpful.

Guys, sorry i haven't been on here in a few days. Hopefully by now you've succesfully made your transits, nonetheless, I'll try and answer your questions for yours and others future reference;
1. I don't know what the hell i was thinking with those times. The whole trip from Greenport to Blue Point took 3hrs10mins. Moriches is 45 minutes from Blue Point and Blue Point is 45 minutes from Lindenhurst, so 1hr30mins Lindy to Moriches. It takes about an hour to get from Moriches to the Shinnecock locks leaving about 1hr25mins +/- from the locks to Greenport. Your total time to Greenport should be under 4hrs. Clearly I was under the influence when I typed those times, sorry for the confusion.
2. You should stay south of Robins Island, once you clear it it's a straight shot to the North side of Shelter and a short hop to Greenport.
3.You've got the coordinates (and probably a usable track on your GPS now.
3a. Yes I go from 26 to 28 and no I have not bumped the bottom. I'd hate to think what bumping the bottom would do to a 30,000 pound boat (dry not fitted out the way my wife leaves for a trip, probably 36-37,000 pounds with fuel, water beer and wifes clothes).
4. Like I said, since I always have to time my transits through moriches to high tide I always have gone through the locks with them closed, which means you have to wait until they cycle the gates open and closed, then open again to get out. I would not want to try it with the current behind me, though going against the current wouldn't be that bad.

Hope your trip went well.

bmac - Thanks for replying. I believe John is still there. I leave this coming Monday. Do you think those GPS coordinate SeaBird gave me (as of June) still look accurate? Not sure how often they change them.

As a side note, i was told going against the current could easily spin your boat around if you don't give it enough throttle. A buddy of mine goes to a neighboring restaurant along the locks and just watches boats bounce off the walls. :smt013 But... like you said... going through Moriches at high tide will mean i hit the locks while they are closed.

Thanks again pal.

The buoys get confirmed or changed by the USCG at least annually, but more frequently if the shoals shift. I didn't look to see what you were given for coordinates, but this is what's in my E-120 from 2 weeks ago, I don't think they've changed since then;

R26 40' 47.298 N, 072' 44.304 W
R28 40' 47.789 N, 072' 43.836 W
G29 40' 47.634 N. 072' 43.239 W

As for going through the locks against the current, it's always easier to handle a boat by adding power rather than getting pushed through by the current and being pushed along. The only way to steer a power boat is with power otherwise you have no control. Same thing with wind, it's always easier to dock a boat into the wind rather than with it. Watching boats bounce off the docks speaks more to general proficiency than proper procedure. :wow: I worry more about getting under the bridge on the South side of the locks than I do about getting through the locks.:smt021

Hey man... thx for looking up those coordinates for me. I agree with you in terms of going against current. Much easier. I think some people are just afraid to power through it and get spun around. :smt101

Lets just hope hurricane Bill lets me actually go on this trip! :smt013:smt013

Hi, All. Back from the Trip. All went good.
Moriches: There where many boats going through the Moriches ( Seatow & Boatus sitting there ) So, I just followed. I did not use the "27" Bouy and Past 3 boats who did. I was going about 10 mph through and then a fishing type boat came through around 25 MPH so I followed him.
The return trip was at 6:30 AM by myself I just followed my GPS tracks.
Greenport: Landsend Marina / Hotel was the place to be. Nice boaters, Pool, Ice delivery ect..
The shinnecock Locks was no big Deal. Its really just a gate the holds you and the water back. You get to work on you "staying steady" boating skills while waiting to enter then you just hold the lines around the cleats.
West Hampton marina was fine uintil the 2 Foot Water Rat ( what she called it i don't think so) ) Scared the hell out of my wife. It ran in and out of the Bathroom from the Marsh lands, so we left at 6 AM the next morning with the early tide. ( will have to mail the check) with No Showers! I thought it was all funny.
The Town of West Hampton was great, open late for a sunday night.
Pics to come
