1980 Sea Ray 245 Sundancer

I just got home. I bought it. I guess I now belong to the 'Hole in the Water Club". I appreciate all the advice everyone gave and I looked over the boat with the intention of walking away if I saw any reg flags. My biggest concern was finding a rotten transom or stringers, which both felt very solid. The boat only has 394 hours on it. The guy I bought it off of had bought it 2 years ago from a friend who was a marine mechanic. The boat was winterized and has sat covered since. I expected to find something wrong or missing from it. But it was in way better shape than expected. It is dark out now, but I will get some pics tomorrow. :)

I know, I have been slacking in getting pictures... I work 12 hour days so I leave when it is dark and get home when it is dark. But here are the few that were posted on craigslist. They are very poor and the only pictures that they had available, no wonder they had a hard time selling it. It is in way better condition than the pictures show. After checking out the boat in person, I didn't even bother trying to haggle the price any lower because I already felt like I was stealing it.

So my first projects are going to be general cleanup, then get a new thermostat, housing and hoses. Then I can go from there and test the rest of the mechanical parts. Is there a good site / sticky thread that details regular boat maintenance? I'm planning on changing the oil and replacing the impeller, but not sure of what else I should check/change/replace.

I'll get some better pictures this weekend.

hard to tell from the engine pic but more than just the stat housing looks like it's not there
but looks like you have a good place to start.
but before you go too far poke around on the stringers near the engine mounts and the transom
for any soft spots if you haven't already.

hard to tell from the engine pic but more than just the stat housing looks like it's not there After looking at all the engine pics yesterday, I was worried about that too. So when I got home, I climbed in there with a work light and made sure everything was there. The pic makes it look like the alternator and power steering pump(?) are missing but they are just out of view of the picture. The hoses are that go the the housing are missing too.

I haven't seen a lot of the 245 Sundancers anywhere... Are they not very common or something?

the 245 is a small dancer...same size as my weekender and mine has more useable deck space
I think more went with the 265/270 to get a little more room and still be a towable craft.

very useable as is. Form follows Function :wink:

I had a 245 dancer and loved the thing... get her up and running and replace the bellows and gimbal to be safe... change all fluids fill up the water tank and I used to take her out in 4'ers in lake erie and feel fine... I loved the boat. It was easy to work on and for $50 buckes a weekend I was all over the place... good luck and congrats on the new lady...
 
One more thing... just a general question... I always thought mercs were black and fords were blue? Don't have the slightest clue just thinking out loud...

it appears to be a SB chev engine...looks like car valvecovers from the early/mid 70s though
SB ford distributors were in the front angled thru the timing cover
 
moparlvr4406 - Nice work. I had actually already bookmarked your thread for future reference :). If I had a bigger boat, I think I would have to get a bigger truck. It towed just fine with my 1/2 ton Silverado, but anything bigger I would think I would need at least a 3/4 ton.

Pyrojodge - Thanks. I didn't know about changing those. I found a site with lots of good info for newbies like me. It has probably been mentioned somewhere here already but I hadn't seen it yet.

That is the main reason I don't own Quint4s 290 right now :smt009

Yeah, you are maxed out with the 1/2 ton. Be gentle on that transmission. I blew 3 transmissions out of my 1/2 ton trucks while towing my old 22ft aluminum boat. The tranny's in 1/2 ton trucks are not meant to do much heavy towing. When you step up to the HD series or 3/4 ton, you get a much better transmission.

Have fun with the new rig. The hull should be great on that boat. That boat was made back when they new how to mix glass and use tough gel coat. Again, make sure the wood in the stingers and transom is not soft inside. If she's solid, you have a great base to work from.

See I knew you motor heads would know the dif...
Rittles... just read up and do your homework... know what to look for if you are doing your own work... metal shavings and milky oil is always a bad thing... other then that it will be small things with any luck... be sure to read up on your outdrive and take good care of it... I am lucky to have a great friend who is a pro boat tech so I can't give you specifics... just the best of luck and take lots of pictures so when the next guy comes along looking for info you will be the man with the plan....

Babes in the woods.... All Mercruiser running gear is black. If its all original why is it blue? It does not have the correct valve covers and one wonders what else it does not have. You better hope that someone did not replace the original engine or block for an automotive one. And why would you believe the seller? He is trying to unload a 32 year old pile of .... sitting in his yard. You would be better off selling the boat for salvage and make the trailer as nice as possible and sell it. You might recoup your $400....maybe.

I hate to be negative but 45 years of boating experience tells me that the only water that boat sees this year will be coming from a hose. Good luck.
 
Mercruisers are Chevy engines. Could be the engine is original but rebuilt 397 hours ago. The rebuilder may have painted it with Chevy blue. The nice thing about these engines is that they are cheap. If it's blown you can find them easy because they built millions of them. They are simple and straight forward to work on. My SRV 207 has one and I'm glad it is the Chevy based Mercruiser and not a Ford. Nothing against Ford, but they are a less common engine and most people I know are Chevy guys.

My '76 Amber Jack has a Ford Merc and it's black. It doesn't appear to have been re-painted, though my '79 EC Chrysler motors were originally blue.
