195 Tandem Axle Trailer Brake Question

I purchased a 195 sport witht he facotry supplied tamdem axle trailer with surge brakes. I tow with an F250 with a 7.3L Powerstroke, obviously power and braking are not an issue. Though, the surge brakes drive me nuts. I have a 7pin and a 4 flat connector on the truck, my trailer has a 5-flat. I have an adpator for the 7pin to a 5-flat.

My question is, is this trailor suposed to pick up the reverse signal and lock out the surge brakes for backing? It drive me nuts to have to get out and put the lock ot key in all the time. If not, then why the 5-flat and not just use a 4-flat?

Yes it is supposed to pick up your reverse signal. I had a nightmare with this lst season since I had a pinched wire on thte solenoid so everytime I shifted past reverse I would blow a fuse. Do a search and you will see my thread and there maybe some helpful info in there

Do you have access to a mutimeter?
Next would be to check that your brake lockout solenoid is working, and not just grounded. Put a meter on it, check resistance from the 5th wire to the ground wire. Should be > zero.

Yup, got access to a meter. Though, if the resistance is zero between them, doesnt that mean that if power is applied ot it its just a dead short?

put someone in the drivers seat. have them put the truck into reverse while you're holding the cilinoid . you will feal a click or feal a constant small vibrating from it. if nothing, simply replace. they go bad...

Hey guys, not sure I agree that the brakes pick up the signal from the reverse lights. from my experience the reason your brakes drag when backing is because you are pushing not pulling on the tounge, which compresses the buit in surge brakes, and they drag. You should have a real tough time backing up a hill and should not notice they drag much at all backing down a hill. The harder you try to back up the more it "surges" the brakes. Fortunately, Kyle F sounds like you have the capacity to back that thing up even if both axles are skidding with that rig!

Birth....there is a solenoid that locks out the brakes for reverse so when the lights go on the solenoid locks the sliding tongue so that the brakes do not engage thus allowing you to back the trailer.

Try and find a schematic of the way the wires are run on your truck and see if they match up to the way the adapter is wired

Weave -
never heard of that, but great idea. I wonder if my trailer has that option? it has the flat five plug. you learn something new every day.

Trls with disk brakes really need the reverse lock out solenoid because the brakes work so good.

You can get drum brakes shoes that release while backing.
I installed some on my trl.

The master cylinder on my drum brake trl would have had to be replaced or drilled and tapped for the solenoid.
