Official (1990-1993) 270/290 DA thread

I went to the local Sea Ray dealer at lunch today to check out the latest in interior colors and I had an idea that instead of doing bolsters in fabric I thought about covering them in teak/like product. We don't have a lot of wood in the interior and I thought it would look rich. Has anyone done this or do you have any opinions?? I would screw or glue the wood to existing bolsters before or after securing them to boat and use cover the screw holes with dowels and stain. Open to thoughts positive or negative. thanks Rob??

Yes, I did. Apparently you were posting and didn't see it at #181

Okay, I'm hummored now, you took the part out about the wood question. :) :)

He is talking about the Vee-berth bolsters.

No, the V-berth ones on the sides. I have 5 pieces in mine, 2 on each side and one under the mirror/headboard. I can look back but while on the subjuect did you do you bed/wall bolster cushions in Vinyl or fabric, hard to see in the picture. Quint4 has a good color scheme as well. thanks Rob

Yes, I have five pieces up there as well. I did mine in fabric. I guess you could do something in wood, that would be easy enough to do just one of the pieces as a trial.
There isn't anything complicated about those pieces, so, it would probably be fun to try a couple of different looks. Remember that there are wires behind those top pieces, so, you have to be careful re-installing them so that you don't run a screw thru a wire - I hate that! :)

Okay Rob, I do have an idea. Don't know if it will work, but, here it is:

1st, a endview of how those pieces are put together:

Now, if you remove the fabric and the top foam piece and then substitute a couple of pieces of 1/2" teak with an LED strip under one of teak pieces and run the light strip all around the vee - and you put fabric over the bottom remaining piece of foam - like this:

Jerry, interesting. Looks like a bit of work. I got to think about that, if done correctly (not sure if I can do it) it may look good. I will show it to some boys down the club. How do you draw all this???

Jerry, your a thinking man!

Here's something different, Anybody put a hatch or window in the midcabin? I would like one in there to let the kids look out wile at cruise. Last boat had windows for the kids to look out witch was well used by them. There is nothing in this boat for them to look out wile cruising. I feel it would not look the best on the outside of the boat.

Dan

Are you talking about on the side of the hull?

In the side of the hull. It would be under the driver seat on the starboard side.

Wow, I thought I was fearless......please videotape this one!

I made a template and cut and "dry laid" the main floor over the carpet with Allure. It is heavy and does not offer to move. I will secure with a few hidden stainless screws. Here is some pics:

So you laid that right over the carpet?

It is just laying over the carpet at the moment. I may just leave it like it is. I know the argument "what if water gets under it?" but we do not allow dripping wet guests in the cabin and even so, this stuff is water tight on the surface. I would say the absolute "right way" to do it is rip the carpet out first. I am happy with the product so far.

Dave, Looks so clean!!
I took a long look at my layout and I have 2 hatches in the floor that connect. (different sizes of course) one for storage and one for sump. do you have the same? How are you going to work around it?? I cant see wasting storageand can't block sump? thx rf

Fortunately, I have no hatches. Maybe you could make a frame over allure edges with flat aluminum stock?

I don't think I can, I will come up with something if I rack my brain long enough. Need to concentrate on getting old engine out and new in, hopefully if the weather cooperates I can turn it around this weekend. Having it delivered on friday to my buddies shop and taking out the old on saturday to do switch. Also ordered all the fabric for the v-berth today. juggling too many balls right now! If I can will take pictures to give a visual. Looks great.
