Boating and Firearms

Not Boating related, but Firearms related. A story of Firearms in the wrong hands. (and I'm a firm believer of the right to bear firearms)

I had the local cable company come troubleshoot my cable last month after I lost everything (tv and Internet). The cable guy was here, troubleshooting things, and went over to my neighbor's house to check the signal there. My neighbor witch was out in her yard ( after she saw us out front near the edge of the road, where the cable tap is) pretending to water her lawn, but just being nosey. Halfway to her house to go to the cable junction on the corner of her house, she starts yelling at him, that he needs to get off her property. He tells her that he's with the cable company, and has a right of way to the property to troubleshoot issues with the cable system. She said he has to ask her permission to go on her property. He responds that he doesn't, that's what the ROW is for. She tells him that if she gets her Smith and Wesson he'll change his mind. He told her, if she does that, he'll have the police here faster than she can imagine. He came back after verifying her signal to her house was good and told me, that he felt bad for me to have to live next to her. I told him, he doesn't know the half of it.

Later, she went in, and called the cable co. to complain, escalating it up a couple levels. They called him, he told them what had happened, and he stopped at the local police dept after he was done, and placed a complaint against her to document her threat. (he's also a local volunteer fireman and first alert/Homeland Security member). He called me to tell me about it, and give me a head's up that the cable company and/or police might be in touch with me to get a statement, since I was nearby and had heard it all. I never did get a chance to give them my statement :smt089

Good story!

I can only wonder why the heck some people are just so uptight about simple things in life. She had NOTHING better to do than probably spend 30 minutes on the phone to complain. Sheesh.

Dont take this personally, because 2 of my best friends that Id do anything for, pack heat continually everywhere they go.

IMO, thats a bit irrational and silly.

She literally is about 60, overweight, retired, bought this as a retirement home, does nothing all day, can't maintain her house(came from a condo), can't even mow her own lawn. The neighbor on the other side mows it, and he and I split mowing her ditch, all in the cause of trying to keep our properties from losing value, due to hers looking like a dump. (all that's missing is a car on blocks!) She's brought in a ton of shrubs, and planted flowers in her "Garden" - no one can make head or tails of her "Garden". The plants are just a mish-mash planted in no sort of recognizable fashion. In front of all that, she had a load of wood chips for her shrubs dumped about 8 yrs ago, and it's still sitting there. Pretty sad. She's got a front porch (a landing basically with 3 steps down to ground. She's nailed boards across it so people won't go to her front door. She has raked her leaves in her yard, and put them in black garbage bags, and left them in her yard, where she filled them, for years! She put a fence up between me and her, and the neighbor on the other side put a fence up between him and her. Her fence is falling down, she's never stained or painted it or protected it in the 4+ yrs it's been there. It's going to rot away.

She's called the police so many times, the last time I talked to the Police Chief a couple yrs ago, he said he's not coming out or sending his officers out, unless someone is in serious distress. She's a nuisance to them as well. None of the neighbors can stand having her around, and they're glad they don't live next to her they've told me. The day the cable guy placed the report, the police were here talking to her for over an hour. I didn't know what was going on, I was watching TV with the windows open, and started hearing her voice get elevated in volume. I look over in her yard, and they're there, talking to her.

Wow, yea, sounds like you have your hands full!!!

The neighbor at our last house decided to take the beautiful open field that bordered our property, about an acres worth, and turn it into a mini game-farm. After a few cows, some sheep, and various other animals, he got lazy with maintenance, and it became a junk yard/mud pit. Hated that!

For anyone who has bad neighbors, PLEASE check this site out! Funny as heck, Ive had it bookmarked for years as it is a great read:

i'm LAO also. in my opinion the more intelligent people we have carrying the better. as long as the people who carry have a good understanding for some type of use of force continuum i'm all for it (ie when you can use deadly force). know your case law, and know when you can use your gun. it never hurts to contact your local prosecutor's office to gain some legal perspective if you aren't sure what your rights are.

Never far away from my 1911- Never had to use it but the sound of a shell being chambered has defused two potentially dangerous incidents.Seems to have a calming effect....

I'm all for gun ownership and the ability to protect yourself but there is alot of responsibilty that goes with guns. Here is a little reminder

Indeed this is a tragic event. However, If this mans selection of home defense was a baseball bat and he hit her over the head she would be just as dead. Using deadly force in the dark without knowing who is the recipant is never a good idea.:smt009

Thats a silly comparison. You have much greater chance of killing someone by accident with a gun compared to a bat.

I agree-guns are more efficient at killing than ball bats. Thats probably why modern military carry guns instead of ball bats. My point is no matter what type weapon you use, safety must be a prominent factor in their use.

But thats not even close to what you posted...just sayin'.

The point of the post was SAFETY, not the relatve effectiveness of various methods of mayhem.

I was watching my father reshape the grip area on a military rifle used during WW2. I asked him why it was so thick and his reply was that if you ran out of ammo or it quit working it still made a good club.

I got it...just busting balls. A typical word of support from over zealous gun owners is that a gun does no more harm than a knife or bat...that if you want to kill someone you can kill them with anything...which is true to a small degree, but not realistic.
