Boating and Firearms

I'm almost done. Have the app and digital fingerprints. I've heard it takes 4 months!

If you follow the traditional path of filling it out and sending in the application, then it can take up to 6-8 months!

However (GOOD NEWS for all of you Florida people), there is a new "expedited" process that allows you to make an appointment at a Florida licensing regional office, and complete and submit your applicaton there. It takes about 30-45 minutes to run through their process, but the turnaround to receiving your Concealed Weapons Permit is only 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately for you, the money you spent on your fingerprints has been wasted, since you will do that again at the regional office. (Yep, I wasted over $50 in fingerprints and passport photo that was not needed).

Basically, you only need three things to show up and apply:

1. ID (FL Driver's License)
2. Proof of Gun Training - (Course certificate, Military ID or DD-214)
3. Check for $117

That's all you need. Right now, if you call, it takes about 4-5 weeks to get an appointment, but if you are patient, you can get one quickly from someone who cancels.

I called up Tuesday, and they had a Wednesday morning cancellation. I had all my paperwork, fingerprints (LIVE SCAN), passport photo, notarized application, etc all done. That did not help at all. They only wanted the three things listed above, and after that, they did everything else.

Overall, a very good process, and very friendly, and highly recommended. I lost $45 going through this process (since I paid for duplicate services), but it is worth it to get the permit 6-8 months earlier.

Details are at:

Let me know how you make out.....

Here is a link to the reciprocity for your CW permit applicability to other states. My Florida Concealed Weapons Permit works in 33 other states (but NOT in D.C.)!

I'm jealous. Up here it takes your whole life until you die. In other words, never. I wish it was so easy.

So, I took the Firearms Safety course, submitted my Class A LTC application, provided a business certificate, deposits slips, and a bank letter to Boston Police Headquarters. I got fast tracked and have my range pass for the handgun test for next Friday. Should have an unrestricted Class A LTC for all lawful purposes in 7 weeks. Who knew? In Massachusetts? I feel special.

The last I heard the state of FL was running behind a little. With Obama in , they currently have over 250,000 permits to handle and were running about 60-90 days until you get your permit. If you get it sooner, let me know.

I got it in SIX DAYS after completing the appointment. :smt038:smt038:smt038:smt038 The hard part is getting an appointment.

My wife just called for hers.....next available appointment is December 2nd.

I live in Alabama just south of Birmingham. Our permits here are very easy. Walk up to the window in the sheriff's office, they run a crime report on you and if you don't have any disqualifying crimes, give them $20 and in a couple of minutes they hand you a concealed carry permit.

You still use the Constitution down there? I'm jealous.

A flare gun could easily set the boat on fire. A very bad choice for defense. You'd be better off with something pointy if you don't have a gun. Or, you could have a gun.

A 12 gauge flair gun works well for defense and all boats should have one.
That may work as long as there is only one adversary. ;)

There is also the real possibility of setting your boat on fire.

Always armed no matter where I go. Minimum 1 Glock with 60 rounds. I'm not going to be carjacked, boatjacked, or corn holed. There's too many scumbags in the world!

Oh, Really? Think very carefully about the scenarios that would put you in the situation that you would be in enough fear to pull the trigger of your flare gun on an assailant. He's just going to be pissed and hurt you or your family more after the flare gets them first on the ricochet. Did you ever throw a rock at a hornet nest? Chosing a flare gun for personal defense will get you carried by 6.

.38, .40, or .45? You are ready for a firefight. Do you carry the extra ammo? That's a lot of hardware.

9mm Glock and 40 cal Glock, both with 60 extra rounds. Both are within easy reach. I have others in special places in case I run into pirates or blue tick hound dog loving sweaty men that play banjos. Taser available upon request, when you want to watch him squirm and s#@t himself. Dirtbags beware, I'm no lemming.

I carry an M-14 (not the "mini") and 120 rounds of 7.62mm API (Armor Piercing Incendiary) in 6 mags everytime I go to the Bahamas. I also have a FN-FNP .45 pistol.

The customs guys at West End used to give me some looks when I declared this until I got to know them. Sometimes they'd ask why I need that.... I'd tell them because I want something that will take out an engine with one shot. This would usually get a chuckle as most of these guys are Bahamian Defense Force vets. Perfectly legal as long as it stays on the boat.

One time about 20 miles north of Walker's Cay I noticed this Panga (common style of boat in the Bahamas) shadowing me..... I was with my girlfriend and my buddy and his GF and we happened to have a few coconuts on board for rum drinks.... I said.. "watch this"... I tossed a couple of them overboard (they float), moved about 50 yards away, went below and came up with the M14 for a little target practice...... Let's just say I've never seen a Panga plane so well in my life..... :smt043

The best defense is a strong offense... If I were down in south Fl, I would want to carry an arsenal... There are Pirates in the Caribbean, and it’s not Capt Jack Sparrow.

I was boarded by US Coast Guard in Georgia coming back from Florida. They asked if I had a firearm on board and I said "yes." They just made sure I did not get to the gun while they did their "safety inspection." They understand the right to defend your domain. I wouldn't leave home without it. I have a CCW permit, but they didn't ask for it.

Be safe out there...

WELL.. I guess I fall into the "gun nut" catagory.. I have 15 firearms in my house. I also have one on my boat. I am have a permit to have one on my boat. I like to hunt and put a great deal of my hard earned money into the economy every year to enjoy my "gun nut" lifestyle. Bill of Rights is a wonderful thing !!!

I always carry. .357Mag, Glock 22 40cal, or Colt 38super with +p ammo.:smt001

I have a carry permit and have a HK USP in 40 on the boat wit me most of the time.

I am ex-military and was once a very active competitive shooter, so my kids look at the guns with about as much concern as a wrench - just one of daddy's tools.

The only time I vary from this practice is if we are going to be near Canada. I then swap out my HK for an assault rifle; a Wilson Combat UT-15 with all the fun furniture, including side-saddle dual magazines (60 rounds on the rifle) with Hornady TAP ammo (armor-piercing). Don't want to have to put into a Canadian port in the event of an emergency with a pistol on board!

Oh, and if out drinking with the boys, I leave the guns behind. Forgot about that...

I stay low-key about having the rifle on board, but some of my boat-mates think I am a bit "touched" when we talk about it...
