Hey I thought it was the guy watching the four boys (sons) getting ready to blow the pop gun both apart with the canon.

Nope, the one that set up the carnival, and is now watching it while eating the popcorn.

I miss you Gary, come back..............

As a paying member here, I don't think his posts are bad enough to be sanctioned. He has a wealth of advise, knowledge and puts humor in it.

Msrobinson, I am sorry your friend took this forum so seriously. You too have given me valuable advise. But I didn't think the posts where that offensive. (may be you should have warned him). Please encourage him to come back.:smt038

Gary is a very independent minded individual from what I can tell. I identify with this as an Alaskan. The PC crowd can go……*self edited.*

From the posts on this thread, the majority should rule (even if they are not sponsored members.....How was that plug Wes?). I think the Mods should sanction the whiners!

BTW I voted for Palin for President.............

I did not post the link (and I have not gone to the one referenced) on purpose. Perhaps he is still a reader so I did not want to put his name out there.

Yes, his question was basic. Why? Because he is new to all this and has never posted on a forum. He did not know how to post a question well enough to get the right replies. Most of us do as we been there, done that. Most of us are internet savy. Guess what? A lot of folks are not.

Mechanically the guy can run circles around most of, probably all the folks that replied with wit/humor. He would be the first one to jump into your engine compartment to help you with something. Heck, we thought we bent a prop and before I could finish my sentence he jumped in the water and swam under our boat to check the props. That's just the kind of person he is. He is the kind of guy you want in the slip next to you.

Why not offer him advice on how to post in a forum versus having fun at his expense. "Hey CSR member, I can't help you with your question but maybe next time try doing this...."

My point is you never know how the wit/humor/whatever you want to call it will be received, especially with a member you do not have a history with. Who knows how many good folks have walked because of this...but at least we have 1-2 valuable posts over the past 2+ years from the members who had fun at his expense and got a few laughs and at a boys.

I looked at the thread. Most of the answers were silly. But they were hardly abusive. No one posted "What a stupid question!" or anything even remotely abusive. It was all just silliness. One must be incredibly thin skinned to have been so astoundingly injured by that one single experience. I think you do your friend a disservice to suggest that the comments on that thread were so very injurious to his ego.

As far as not being technically savvy, I don't think that argument holds much water. There are guys here who don't know the difference between a web forum and a list server and they manage just fine.

Best regards,
Frank

Gary is preparing for the upcoming redistribution of wealth and just doesn't have time for CSR right now. I think I saw him wandering the neighborhood looking for new digs.

Greg,

Did you ever consider that the introduction you gave your friend may have made the CSR members treat him like "one of the guys" and even contributed to the good natured comments he got? The question did seem quite elemental for a guy with the experience you indicated, and nobody in his right mind would for a minute think anyone was serious recommending that he take his panel apart with a crowbar or C-4. I'm pretty rigid and even I saw the humor in those comments.

Frank-

Too oblique....he'll miss it completely!

Actually, he's with the other diesel boat snobs setting up accounts in the Cayman Islands. You've got until the end of the year.

Caymans? Dang it!

I just reserved a slip and moved all the coin I won in life's lottery to the Bahamas!

Sigh.

he'll be back, as a matter of fact he hasn't gone anywhere he's been monitoring this thread the whole time (approx. once per hr.)... hope to hear from you soon Gary, as stated many times your wealth of knowledge is quite an asset to this site and is worth it's weight in gold!

I wonder if there is this this much personality debate on a sailboater forum....and no, I'm not a bit interested in checking it out!

Thanks FrankW, I just spent the last 2 hours listening to 100 year old recordings.

did you know there is a whole slew of Uncle Josh recordings. Uncle Josh buys a car. Uncle Josh on a 5th ave bus, Uncle Josh in a Chinese Laundry, Uncle Josh and the Labor Union, Uncle Josh and Aunt Nancy put up a Kitchen Stove. The list is endless.

You HAVE to be old to even know of these.

This is an easy one....:)

PS: I don't know a lot about boats , and I appreciate getting helpful information from people like Gary, and Frank, and .....

Mike,

What makes you think I know anything at all about Uncle Josh. I just figured since nobody here talks about boating anymore, it would be cool to send everyone looking for Uncle Josh. I'm actually more of an Eagles, Doobie Bros, Styx, Walter Becker/Donald Fagan, Boz Skaggs etc. fan.

Send me my $5............!

Exactly, so if you treat people respectfully you will earn respect.

Who are you referring to about robotic application of the rules? i would really like to know. That's simply not the way its done here. Please give me some examples too. Perhaps you can start with the picture that Gary put up here of the b u l l s h i t meter. No profanity is allowed, just as a respectful person wouldn't spout out profanity in front of a public group of people.

As an admin, if you don't like the reference to profanity, don't use it in your post...his reference to the bs meter was spoken from the heart and hit the proverbial nail on the head:smt021. Let the man speak and he will continue to inform...

I think he was spot on and said what he meant.

You are reading the same thread as me right? Where the BS meter is right there in full view? And you think he was spot on with what? The picture in the urinal or the BS meter? What was the BS meter even referring to

We'll have to take a poll - to see of "profanity from the heart" is acceptable behavior in public

I took it more as a slam against the "new" policy of freezing posts after one hour.

It basically stopped him from deleting any more of his prior posts.

Of course, this is only my interpetation of meaning.

Jim: Keep up the good work. I may not agree with every decision you make. . .but overall. . . good job.

I had no idea they could be edited after months. I am so used to the time limit being 5 minutes or so on all the other forums I'm on. 1 hour is enough to correct it after 2 or three people have responded to call you a bonehead  On the other forums I am on you have to get it right the first time.
