How about this. 2 weeks from now a member does a search, and lands on the discussion you describe. The member comes to the 3 pages of empty dialog, decides it's a waste of their time and moves on, maybe with enough information, maybe not. Now, lets say on page 5 an on-topic reply did make it's way in, in between all the other off topic stuff. This will be missed by the member, right? Unless the member carefully takes the time to sift through all of the non topic posts.
Go to the general discussion right now, or sport boats. In every one of the threads where information was requested, the answers were made in the fist bunch of responses. There is no empty dialog that I can see in threads where information is requested at the begining of the threads. They do go off on tangents after, which I think is fine. Not saying thats the right thing, just I dont mind it.
I look at it this way: 2 weeks from now a new member looks for an answer to a question. Gets his answers in the first page or two, then sees 2 more pages of bantering between what seems like friendly people. They stay.
Maybe only Jim or Wes can answer this, but do you find more people registering and PARTICIPATING more now than in the past?
